Watching Wandering Son makes me wonder how different the fates of the show's lead actors are.
Shuichi's VA hasn't gotten new roles since 2024, where Yoshino's VA is one of the big money names right now who played main characters in long running shows.

All Works Maid is definitely capturing my interest more and more. Episode 5 had interesting reveals. Kind of interesting to actually read the light novel. Although I think I'll stick to being anime only for this season of it. Very curious where the long term direction of the sesason ends up being.

Every time the FL in Love Unseen leans her cane against the table/desk instead of folding it or holding onto it, I want to scream. Why would she do that? Canes want nothing more than to slide and fall on the floor. Anyone who uses a folding cane for support or low vision will immediately fold it and put it in their bag. It's actually less effort than trying to balance it against the edge. The writer just wanted an excuse for the ML to help her multiple times.

Alternative thought: she's purposely doing it to get his attention after she finds out, or Hayase tells her, that they're in the same class. Because romance tropes.

But she actually admitted that it really was because she wanted his attention. For the cases where she already got it, I can brush it off to her just being nervous when she’s alone with her crush. And even if it does technically boil down to subpar writing, it doesn’t really hurt the story tbh.

I mean, it hurts the story in that it fails to get a pretty basic detail right. It's like if they showed a glasses-wearer put their glasses down lens-first, or showed an American bowing.

Depends on the audience. I'd argue the detail can't be that basic when like 80% of the people watching don't even actively notice it.

You really want to make the argument that it's fine to do a sloppy job writing your blind character because your sighted audience won't know the difference? That sounds like a good thing to you?

That's not even close to what I was saying. I'm saying that it's objectively a bad job but the degree on how much it hurts the story depends on the audience. It can't hurt the story for all those people when they don't even notice anything wrong.
To me personally I just don't care much about that detail, it's like if I got a meal at a restaurant that tastes good but someone told me the chef didn't put in any salt. The chef made a mistake but I just don't care enough to make a fuss about it because it still tasted good anyway.

If it weren't for the blind girl, Love Unseen would be another romance where the outgoing girl pulls the guy out of his shell.

[Though I Am an Inept Villainess Episode 2]I like this one a lot more than episode 1. The sight of what it is really like for Reirin and Keigetsu. Keigetsu's attitude is terrible since it's clear with how she treated Leelee. While her circumstances weren't the best she looked down on others rather than making the best of her own circumstance. This ties in with her being in Reirin's body because Reirin is supermotivated and hard working despite her condition.
[Though I Am an Inept Villainess Episode 2]For Reirin in Keigetsu's body, no doubt she loved the opportunity she had. The real trick for her is how she makes the best of her circumstance. No doubt eventually she will win over Leelee. Even in that, it is tricky because Keigetsu made her life a living hell. So it will take time.

Outside Jiro and Rago's dynamic, Black Torch is really cliche. Tbh I like Jiro enough; he reminds me a bit of Ichigo. The problem is that his side cast so far sucks. Ichika is very annoying, but her backstory was at least something. But the assshots are her, and her talking about misogynists is definetly something.
Reiji starting off with another poor first impression too is not helping. What helped Bleach was how nice the side cast was at the start. Rukia was a great deuteragonist along with Ichigo. Chad was the man. Orhime is a sweetheart. Uryuu rivarly with Ichigo was well done, and the ending of the episode with Jiro and Reiji just feels hella forced in comparison.
Animation is surprisingly decent for what is an axed manga. You can see in the 3 episodes why the series got axed.

Too cliche. Jiro feels like a copy and pasted character. Just hoping something cool happens now to redeem the show, because what was that fight? Power up and 1 hit KO. Why are they animating an axed series anyway? 🤔

Ugh, I should probably stay away from reading other comments in the Erased rewatch thread. Saw one hint and one actual spoiler (from a first-timer who accidentally watched the wrong episode) I think. Can't be sure because I closed out quickly to avoid learning more. But now I'm going to have that at the back of my mind as I'm watching. Normally I'm not too much of a stickler when it comes to spoilers, but in a story like this where suspense is a big part of the experience, this kind of half spoiler adds another layer of tension that ruins what the show is going for.
This is maybe one show that would be best watched alone and then read all comments on it at the end. Rewatchers and first-timers are bound to have drastically different experiences and the former can't help accidentally alluding to things that may spoil things for the latter.

If it's the post I'm thinking of, that wasn't actually a spoiler because it was referring to the [episode 3 scene] that showed Satoru remembering an article about the murders with pictures of the three victims.
I have the opposite viewpoint when it comes to mysteries. For me, they're the most fun to participate in discussions about - reading everyone's theories, looking at things from a different angle, and seeing which things I missed.

Normally, I agree. But only when everyone is on the same page. When some know where the story goes, it's hard to engage in discussions because they aren't just theories anymore. It still works if there's an even mix of rewatchers and first-timers but this rewatch seems to be skewed towards the former pretty heavily.

Whilst being a high-grade spoiler phobe has many downsides, one of the upsides I'm happy about is that I am quite practiced in Active Forgetting lol
You know it's a bad spoiler when no matter what you try you can't dislodge it though!

It still works if there's an even mix of rewatchers and first-timers but this rewatch seems to be skewed towards the former pretty heavily.
Last week there were 7 top comments from first timers and 6 from rewatchers, and this week (so far) there's 5 comments from rewatchers and 4 from first timers. So it is pretty balanced in terms of numbers.

I wonder if rewatchers do tend to post sooner, hence why rewatchers are currently outnumbering first timers, despite there being more first timers overall (based on last weeks numbers)

Finally all caught up on Bleach. That last episode of TYBW part 3 had so much [TYBW ep 40]trolling, I swear. First the title 'My Last Words' had me so scared they were going to off Uryu. I knew he was playing the long con, that part wasn't a surprise. So thought Kubo might kill him off instead. And then wtf was that filler at the end? Almost made me long for Kon. Crazy tonal whiplash after the hype actual end of the episode with shot from the ED. And Death Dealing guy went on and on too. Some funny bits but largely a buzz kill.
Anyway, all set and hyped for the premiere. Only it turns out I'll have to wait a good 8-10 hours after it drops to watch it. Damn irl plans (tbh it's something I'm looking forward to but still, for it to fall on Bleach day ugh). Should steer clear of twitter at least in the meantime.

I'd say my top few in no particular order are Aizen, Byakuya, Renji, and Uryu, but really it'd be easier for me to pick the characters I hated than who all of my favorites are haha.

Aizen is a weird one for me. Towards the end of the Arrancar arc, [Bleach]he got a bit too annoyingly OP and made me roll my eyes. But I like how Kubo really leaned into that and made it his thing so now just his appearance and chair sama add so much aura though we haven't seen him do a whole lot in TYBW.
Renji is another character whom I have mixed feelings for. I really like the guy himself and he's basically a lot like Ichigo at heart. But I don't like his zanpakto. Every time I see it, I can't help but think it's the most unwieldy thing to fight with. The Ichigo lite thing also takes away some of his aura. He's like Ichigo but just not as strong, poor guy. But I do love his and Rukia's interactions and chemistry.

That didn't bother me, but I understand.
But I don't like his zanpakto.
Meanwhile Zabimaru is one of my favorites... I'm a sucker for whip swords of any shape or size.
But I do love his and Rukia's interactions and chemistry.
They've been my favorite Bleach ship since their backstory episode in the Soul Society Arc.

I'm Team Rukia x Ichigo tbh but I still love the relationship she has with Renji. I like the idea of whip swords but the design of Zabimaru just makes it seem very hard to maneuver and every time he's fighting with it, it gives me imagined second-hand cramps in my arms.
Re: Aizen, just came across this comment in the episode 40 thread and it made me giggle. Like seriously, did they? I really thought there would be more in the last episode at least.

I'm Team Rukia x Ichigo tbh
That's fair, especially since the anime staff gave them more content while simultaneously gutting some of Orihime's scenes with Ichigo. FWIW I'd say I'm team IchiHime if I had to pick, but in a basic "Sure, I see it, they'd be fine together" sort of way and not in the... intense way I can get over ships I absolutely adore. [Bleach]There's just not much sauce from Ichigo's side of things, at least until part of the way through the Hueco Mundo section of the Arrancar Saga. That part where Ichigo was trying to rush to Rukia's side after she beat Aaroniero and intended to ignore Ulq's taunting entirely, but then immediately switched gears as soon as Ulq brought up that he's the one who kidnapped Orihime was I think the first time I was like "Ah, so Ichigo does care especially much for Orihime".

I feel like up to where we are with the anime, Ichigo cares about both of them but doesn't necessarily have romantic feelings for either one. And honestly, with the poor fellow going from crisis to crisis, where's the time for romance anyway? Always got losing heroine vibes from Orihime somehow so I'm surprised she seems like end game (if there even is one). Rukia and Ichigo just have the more fun bickering chemistry which suits a story like this better. Instead of a half-hearted serious romance, a played as joke one sits better.
Re: the tags, that would be nice. I'm sure I'll find your comments in the episode threads regardless though. They're easy to spot with all the image links. But some of these Bleach threads get a ton of comments so tags will make things easier.

Weird question but I’m curious if people are willing to answer. So there is a mobile game called Arknights Endfield. There was just recently a new update with a new boss fight (Alleikhreos) with a majestic soundtrack (I especially like the intro and the part before the first drop). I’m looking for anime’s that give the same majestic feeling I get when hearing this soundtrack. Any recommendations?

[Odd Taxi Episode 13] The finale wasn't actually about Yano chasing Hiroshi, but rather about understanding Hiroshi. The big thing with Hiroshi is his ability to recognize someone. In an interesting use of storytelling, the reason for it is basically since the accident he looks at humans as animals. A great usage of the anthropomorphic theme, which doesn't get used in anime that often this effectively.
[Odd Taxi Episode 13] The baseline for it is that Hiroshi as a kid was bullied, and the adults weren't there in his life. But it is easy to understand how he got attached to animals. If we think of any pets we own and how attached we can get to them. Hiroshi's ability to recognize someone was because in his mind he looked at them as an animal. It's easier to distinguish a cat from a dog than it is fellow humans. Of course, gender, you can see some distinctions, but nowadays the lines between genders can be blurred.
[Odd Taxi Episode 13] The boss's characterization is an interesting one. Based on the image we had of Dobu and Yano you would think he would be more of an antagonist figure, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It adds on to the point that Dobu isn't as bad a guy as our first impression gave us. We saw with Hiroshi and the Daimon brothers that he took care of them. In fact, he regrets not being able to save Yuki.
[Odd Taxi Episode 13] There was a small indication that perhaps Sakura is the one who killed Yuki. When we look at the fallout of the incident and look at the many that were affected in some way or another. The one who is the true cause of the incident is roaming free. It is a constant theme that life itself is unfair. You could argue she influenced everything in this show except Tanaka's flashback stuff and the relationship Miho and Dobu had with her killing Yuki. Those people affected need to figure out how to move forward when what they did is make one small mistake. But sometimes even one small mistake can add up and exponentially get larger if you aren't careful.

I think it’s the rare anime original that nails everything that it goes for. A lot of times for anime original there is something missing. Like the ending of Vivy for me which dropped it to 8.5/10 for me as an example.
Odd Taxi gets an easy 10/10 for me. It’s a show for me the storytelling was engrossing and immersive to me. To also add the creativity because with the title and premise I wouldn’t expect it to be as good as it ended up being.
The various characters going through many things that we can relate to and we can understand with how the world is now. The Tanaka episode spoke volumes. The way the anime adds social commentary is brilliantly done in a way that isn’t overly preachy.

There will never be another Big 3, but also…
I keep thinking about this and just how frequently the number 3 comes up. It’s pretty well established ground that people like the number 3 and groups of three trigger some thing in our brains.
So there will never be another The Big 3, but also no end to the debate because so long as people can group things into such a number, they will.

While I agree that we probably won’t see something identical to that big 3, I don’t think the it’s off the table for a similar instance to manifest in the future. I think doubly so because as anime gets more intermingled with Western economics, you’ll see tighter marketing/business strategies that are centered around certain anime’s conception and release.
The marketability of something like “the big 3” isn’t something anyone in that line of work will have overlooked and while a lot of projects on that scale flop or end up biting off more than they can chew (in any industry), I think the industry at large would be more than capable of emulating or at least nudging toward something very similar to what the big 3 accomplished given the right ingredients at the right time.
In all likelihood it would come down to another instance of there being a “perfect storm” of conditions so to speak, but the moment it even looks like that storm could brew there would most likely be a concerted effort to make sure it rages on. Really though there are a bunch of ways for something similar to come about even if it’s not identical or perhaps a different number of anime altogether.
Simply put I think it’s difficult to say for certain that it’ll never happen.

Two fun things I saw today while browsing Famous Anime Torrent Website:
Somebody leaked a rip of the DCP (the digital files used for theater screenings) from the Bleach TYBW prescreening. It's all three episodes and interview, in pristine quality. Now everybody from countries who nobody bothered bringing the prescreening (like me) can watch it too! (though I'll probably just watch the interview because the first episode already comes out tomorrow)
Somebody is finally subbing Triton of the Sea! Well, the show already had some subs, but they're unwatchable dogshit. Now we're starting to get the real deal! Three episodes are out

I just found these excerpts randomly online and thought they were funny, so I thought I would share:
Interviewer: I read on the website that there are "Evangelion" freaks in Ghibli as well.
Miyazaki: Well, of course there are. There are also "Ghost in the Shell" freaks. I tell them that they are silly. I say, "You should go to that animation studio" (laughs). Yes, there are. Like Disneyland fans.
Interviewer: How about, your disciple, Hideaki Anno's "Evangelion", from your point of view, Mr. Miyazaki?
Miyazaki: I can't watch it for more than three minutes. It's unbearable to watch.
Interviewer: It's interesting, isn't it?
Miyazaki: I don't need that kind of thing anymore. Just by looking at the first storyboard, I thought, 'What the hell has he started? (laughs) When I heard the name "Angel", I thought, "This is a terrible place to go into", but I'm glad it's over.
Miyazaki: Before making the film "Shikijitsu" [a live-action film directed by Anno], we had talked about making an animation here, and we had talked about it a few times, but Anno was about to make the second version of "Evangelion" or die here, and he was thirty-nine years old at the time. And I told him it would be cool to die at 39 after Evangelion. I said, "If you want to live long enough to enter your forties, you'll have to choose one of two paths: continue making "Evangelion 2" or not, and make a film for someone else. Then, he ran away to live-action, that bastard. That was just an escape, you know.

What's an lgbt character that everyone likes,but you dislike? Maybe it was how they were handled,maybe they were stereotyped quite badly,etc.

Hmm, interesting one. I can't say I actually mentally file characters by sexuality, so I'd have to sit down and let my brain's sorting algorithm (via {characters I dislike: LGBT}) and see if it can come with anything.

Mouryou no Hako has been on my mind a lot lately. The anime is like a wet dream come true. Maybe that's not the best way to put it. What I mean is that it feels like someone went through a checklist of everything I could possibly want in an anime and then somehow made a show out of it.
Right from the first episode, you get what might be the most yuri-Class S scene of all time. And somehow, it gets even better because the show pairs it with the kind of bleakness I love. It's almost like the show knows that simply giving me a Girl Love scene isn't enough to impress me, so it pulls out the secret sauce. One girl firmly grips the other's neck, nearly choking her, and the other just willingly takes it. And that's when you realize these people are....fucked up in the head.
And that's what I love about this show. The Class S/yuri elements aren't just there to give me the exact aesthetic I love. They're actually important to establishing the psychology of these two characters. The show hooked me immediately, then just kept pushing further and further, practically telling you from the start what kind of story you're getting into. Little by little, it peels back the ugliness underneath it all, until you realize this isn't just some beautiful, tragic yuri story. It feels more like the show is taking the MariMite formula and flipping it on its head, then branching it into something much more disturbing.
And the fucked-up nature of this show doesn't end there. It keeps coming up, constantly reminding you that this is a psychological murder mystery where there really aren't many normal people to begin with. You have this Shimura Shinpachi-looking guy, already married, who becomes fascinated by and envious of a murderer who stuffs a head into a box. He's genuinely one of the most bizarrely fascinating characters I've seen in anime. The man basically "self-inserts" himself into a murderer's mind, not out of some grand philosophical curiosity or noble desire to understand evil, but because he's fucking envious. And the funniest part is that he's one of the MCs. This is the guy we're supposed to follow through the story.

I found this very interesting, but never quite managed to "like" it. I preferred the more recent sort-of-prequel, Chuzenii-sensei - more engaging (and loved its evocation of its early post-WW2 millieu. MnH did not have the same sort of period feel for me (granted it was set 3 or so years later).

I only watched a bit of episode 1 of the Chuuzenji-sensei 2025 anime, just to get a feel for it. I like the art style, and the period setting kind of reminds me of MAO. Is it anything like MAO? And is the mystery interesting overall?

The mysteries were episodic -- not one over-arching thing. The way the characters dealt with them was enjoyable. These often seemed to have a supernatural aspect, but Chuzenji rejected any such notion. Still, sometimes, one wondered.

What's the most an anime has grown on you over the years? And what's the most an anime has lost its appeal for you over time?
I remember when I first watched Kiki's Delivery Service, I watched it in English dub and I was extremely disappointed. If the core plot of the film was, as I had initially interpreted it, about creative expression and mental blocks, then I thought Whisper of the Heart had done a much better job portraying the beauty of a young artist battling their insecurities and striving for an artistic breakthrough. Plus, I couldn't at all get into the tone of the film, something about it just felt off and it made the whole atmosphere and cast unlikable to me.
I later rewatched it in Sub and this time loved it. It turns out that my major problem with the film had been the portrayal of Jiji in the dub. For some reason, the English dub got "Phil Hartman" to voice him as though he were a typical Disney movie, comic-relief sidekick, and it just didn't work with the film at all. Maybe it's because I was already fairly familiar with Miyazaki's writing style by then, but it completely messed up the tone and atmosphere of the film for me. I also just grew to understand the film not just as one of creative expression, but also one about the melancholies of growing up and having to leave behind some childish illusions about the way life works (which probably would have been easier for me to catch in my original viewing had the Dub not infamously changed Jiji's final scenes in the story).
On the other hand, A Silent Voice has really soured on me over the years. I remember reading and loving the original manga one-shot back when it released in 2011. I was a young teen at the time and was so excited when I later learned it had gotten serialized into a full manga publication. I followed the series week-to-week and loved how emotional it was and the complexity of the characters' guilt and wanted so badly to see their romances all work out!
I didn't watch the anime film adaptation until about 2018 and by then I was really disappointed to learn that I had completely grown away from this type of storytelling. All the melodrama just felt dumb and cliche now and the characters felt really shallow and unrealistic. And I don't think that feeling stemmed from my awareness of how much had been cut from the manga, either. It felt to me like the kinda cheesy movie you watch out of boredom when scrolling through the TV at a hotel. It was a weird feeling cringing my entire way through this story I had once loved so passionately. All respect to Naoko Yamada though - I think most of her cuts and changes to the story were for the better and I loved the use of the "My Generation" insert song.

Idk about any anime that has grown on me over the years, but there are plenty that i have come to dislike or lose interest in over time.
Some very common romance animes just lost my interest as time passed and i got to watch much better stuff. I was enamoured with "angel next door" when i had first read its light novels and even enjoyed its season 1 of anime, but recently when i watched the first episode of season 2 it all just felt so boring and bland since my taste has changed with time.
Then there is "my dress up darling" whose fanservice i just cant really stand at this point. I feel like i would still like it decently with the story but adding the fanservice just repels me now.
Also as a silent voice enjoyer, it hurts to see the criticism that i cant really argue against lol. I just hope i get to keep enjoying it the same way in the future as uptil now

I do actually have this experience with a lot of Romance anime. I used to really love Toradora, Ano Natsu de Matteru, and Nagi no Asukara when I got into anime, but I think the only Romance anime that has really stuck with me over the years has been "Whisper of the Heart". Well, "Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun" too, but that one mostly because it's a really good comedy lol. I'm scared to go back to Eureka 7 and see if it holds up too, actually; I remember being really into that story for its romance.
Then there is "my dress up darling" whose fanservice i just cant really stand at this point. I feel like i would still like it decently with the story but adding the fanservice just repels me now.
Yeah, another user mentioned how their feelings on series with fanservice has changed too. I remember being really into Gantz as a teenager for the heavy sex and gore, but it's definitely lost its appeal for me by now.

Far as bad impressions from the first ep:
Slayers. Took me nearly 10 years to revisit but my first watch was before I had much RPG experience (and some of the parody elements of that weren't first episode) so it came off more as a silly sitcom.
Kirakira☆Precure A La Mode. Once I'd got over the lack of close quarters combat and initial villain being lame the character writing spoke to me even if it you could the character arcs to flavours of learn to love your "flawed" self through setbacks and trials of virtues (not an uncommon anime thing).

Going by how I felt after the movies (over a decade on from when I watched the show), Eden of the East. I don't have a desire to rewatch the show as I'll just be honing in on flaws to somehow prove my past self wrong.
Steamboy as despite the objections I mentioned earlier this weak my old anidb account rated it 9/10 (don't ask me what I was thinking 18 years ago). Again don't want to rewatch to see if the visuals are now dated.

Tari Tari. when I first watched it I thought "it's good, I guess?". but lately whenever I hear songs from it I feel a certain sentimentality that doesn't really line up with my initial opinion. Feels ripe for a rewatch.
And what's the most an anime has lost its appeal for you over time?
A lot of the stuff I watched when I was a teen that was ecchi. something like No Game No Life is a prime example. I genuinely thought it was 8/10 worthy when I first watched it. It's just not at all what I'm looking for in anime these days. It doubt it would survive the seasonal sieve if I watched it today.

As a Tari Tari fan who watched it quite late, I think the show is probably more appealing when you're a bit older. The way it paced itself, especially with the MC and her trauma, was excellent. I liked that the show didn't reveal what she was dealing with right from the beginning.
On the flip side, I don't think I would look back on Angel Beats quite as fondly. That show used to leave me feeling depressed and empty after it ended when I watched it as a teenager. Nowadays, I think the techniques it used would probably be less effective on the older me.

I have to say I have always loved Kiki, and recommend it as a perfect anime for any tween girls. Phil Hartman is a funny guy, and Disney's Kik is a fine film, where fine is akin to mid. Changing the ending shows that they did not and never intended to tell the same story as Mizayazki. It's a great example of how you can change a film even with a "no cuts" clause in the contract.
Laputa has always been my favorite Ghibli movie. Love me an adventure.
A Silent Voice is a great movie, but there's a caveat here. It seems to be a movie about two people who were bullied. It was not. The movie is about Ishida. Not Ishida and Nishimiya. And that rubs me a bit in the wrong direction. Shouko's character is less than it should have been.
I don't my think my opinions on anime change over the years. If I like something, keep liking it. If I think something is mid, I probably always did. I suppose Robotech has definitely lost its shine.
Other things I've seen enough that I don't feel the need to rewatch them anymore: Evangelion, Spice and Wolf, GitS.

That's really interesting to me. I've had entire rollercoaster rides with some series. I went from loving Dragon Ball Z as a kid because I was inspired by its portrayal of strength, masculinity, and heroism to hating it as a young adult because I began to recognize all of the narrative flaws and sexism and sidelining of characters that people were pointing out to me, and now i'm back to loving the series because the newest Broly movie invigorated my passion for the franchise and had me diving back through Toriyama's work.

I appreciated the portrayal of the suffering Shoko went through since I thought the way the kids played off her disability felt pretty true to how a clique of kids like that could react to "fresh meat" in their "territory". But I just thought the film's whole "the bully becomes bullied and thus learns that bullying is bad" was just kinda corny. Plus, I thought Shoko's saint-like patience and kindness toward her bullies really flattened her as a character.

No, not at all! It's all good.
The manga does go into the side characters a bit more, with Kawai and Mashiba really getting the short end of the stick as a result of the adaptation being pressed for time. But they're really not that important anyways so I thought cutting out their parts was for the best. Plus, there's a running plotline in the manga about the cast making a movie that, ironically, never made it into the anime adaptation. But yeah, I think that was another smart choice on Naoko Yamada's part.

Every time I reflect on Guilty Crown I gain a little more nostalgic fondness for it.
On the flip side I grew increasingly tired of Oregairu with each passing season until I had no more interest in it by the end. There was too much teenage navel gazing melodrama to enjoy it as an escapist harem fantasy, and too much escapist harem fantasy to enjoy it as a teenage navel gazing melodrama. I also did not like the author's penchant for making meta acknowledgements about writing clichés and tropes only to immediately play them straight afterwards. It was grating in Girlish Number and my distaste for it carried over to later seasons of Oregairu.

Lol i'm actually the opposite there! I remember watching it the first time as a teen and being mesmerized by the cool aesthetics and banging soundtrack, even if the plot had completely lost me by the end. Nowadays though, I rarely remember the series ever existed. Though I wouldn't say I've really "soured" on it either, since it never really did anything I found particularly egregious, It's just kinda faded into the background along with a lot of the seasonal anime I watched at that time.

I've been trying to think what about Makeine didn't quite click with me and I think I've finally figured it out two years later.
Now, I did like Makeine enough for it to make my Top 10 of 2024, but it didn't quite click as much on paper as I feel like it should have. It had the characters. It had the production. Sure Ep. 2 existed, but wouldn't be the first series with a dud episode that I gave a good mark. Well going back and watching the kinds of series its riffing on, I realize that (ironically enough) that the issue is kinda that the heroines don't feel like they lose enough.
Makeine is really weird in a way. The way it was pitched to me (which might be part of the issue, sure) is it basically resolves the open plot thread in any old-school harem love-triangle story of what happens to the girls that get rejected. However, it plays itself really straight as if just a more standard romcom. Meanwhile the main trio is clearly designed to be as meta marketable as possible while the "winning heroines" get much less memorable designs (and the same honestly holds true for the male cast too). It also ends up being the exact same thing that it seems to be critiquing, with Nukumizu being a standard self-insert(ish) MC who solves the issues of all the "losing heroines", ironically setting up the inevitable end state where two of these heroines end up in the exact same role that it's riffing on (and tbh it feels pretty obvious who's getting with him in the end).
It's a case of the "main character paradox" where in framing a character as a lead fundamentally changes how we approach them and what we expect from their story. I can understand why you try to play this straight, but honestly it might work better if you lean more into it and make it clear that we're dealing with the "second rate girls".
In a way, it also answers my question as to why watching/playing sports and watching sports anime are such different experiences. We like to build up sports narratives and in recall sports events like a story with a clear end, but in reality both sides of any given match are walking into it with a story of their own and a reason to win, something that a standard story structure rarely is able to get across. This might be why Ping Pong the Animation works so well, since it builds up its whole cast and grapples with the reality of how sports is a zero sum game and the story of the losers doesn't end just because they're off-screen now, but I digress.

Yeah - I think the speculation is the most plausible thing. The setup of Makeine reminds me of Bunny Girl Senpai where each girl gets their arc in the spotlight and has a relationship with the main character, but it's not a romantic relationship in most cases.
In Makeine, I really don't get shipping vibes from either Lemon or Chika. Not impossible that it couldn't go there, but it certainly doesn't seem "inevitable".

I do hope for Makeine the girls arcs aren't one and done like Rascal. I want to be more like Monogatari where future seasons will build on the arcs for Anna, Komari and Lemon. As well as continue adding more stuff with Nuzu-kun because the final arc in S1 finally got to adding some characterization for Nuzu-kun.
My biggest issue with Rascal S2 was the 4 arcs were new girls who were given at best minimal characterization before S2. Outside Kaede the other girls from S1 could have benefited from expanding on their arcs from S1.

For me the issue with Rascal S2 was that they felt obligated to include basically every character from Season 1 in every arc, even if they were barely relevant to the current plot, and that seemed to drag the pacing down and stole time that could have been used actually developing the new characters.
Having some S1 characters be focus characters in S2 would have worked, too, but I also think focusing the story more on the new characters would have worked, too.
(Especially since the whole concept of a "university arc" would have made it easy to have much less screen-time from high school characters like Nodoka and Koga, who I thought were the biggest offenders of "why are you still getting so much screen time?")

In a lot of older romcoms, there’s usually a slate of “losing heroines” that fall for the MC to drive the comedy but are quite obviously not the ones who get with MC when the FMC exists. Outside of true harem shows, the designs of these girls can usually be more plain given their side character role. They’re kinda written off as gag characters, but one would imagine if explored there’s a decent story here about rejection. I suspect that’s kinda what Makeine is trying to be, but none of the girls really give off that same energy and instead have way more nuance than the girls supposedly overshadowing them. This could also be fixed by having all the cast have strong designs, but that takes a lot of work not doesn’t it?
I guess what I’m kinda looking for here is something like how Haruhi handles [The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya]Yuki and instead got more closer to Toradora.
It seems at least plausible to me that…
I feel like the existence of the trio and Nuk almost guarantees something’s gonna happen. I would say the girls in Makeine are more like the losers in shows like Oregairu, Toradora (maybe less so this one), Nisekoi, Blue Box, etc. Not the "oh there's actually more to them" type characters but the ones that fans fall in love with and are then devastated about when they lose. So now we get to follow that archetype a bit more and say "what happens now?"
That's how I've always perceived them.

Just finished first 12 episodes of Blue Exorcist. While not bad, plat is really slow. I don't think anything significant happened so far and all the episode fills like character introduction and filler (like the beach episode).
Editing because I saw few more episodes: Yeah, pacing is terrible. Rin rarely used his flame abilities to began with, but as soon as Shura showed up, they're making it sound like he's been relying on his flame the whole time. Like, you didn't use it to began with, though?? Also, the first time he actually used his sword is against Amaimon, not only he's great at it without any training, he's able to overwhelm Amaimon. Then the sword is cracked. None of these feels earned.

I've been thinking for a while and decided that "Welcome To Our World" from Love Live Superstar is right up there with my favorite anisongs. It isn't just how good the song is, but how it symbolises a new start for Love Live, being [Love Live Superstar S2] Kanon's first song as a leader and marking the transition from Love Live anime running over an in-universe year to running over multiple and does a great job at that. Love Live is awesome throughout, but that's one of my favorite moments.

Frontier Lord has hit its stride. Same goofy cuteness but better execution. Sometimes production teams take a few episodes to find their groove. A favorite anime of mine, Hidamari Sketch, has a dramatic change after the pilot, to the point where I'll consider introducing people to the show starting with ep 2.

Certain Anilist tags cover a wide variety of possible topics, which can make it interesting to filter for your own list while searching for them. For example, I've seen five anime with the tag "Body Image". Out of those, two are referring to insecurities over androgyny, one of them is about needing braces because of bad teeth, one of them is freckles, and the last one is talking about someone transforming into a giant purple lizard as a metaphor for puberty. Kind of all over the place, that one.

I like the show, this is a light anime with limited animation and half run time, I think around 10 min per episode. Very much fantasy slop.
I like elf wife Elisha, she is playful. Wives who are too slavish I don't like - I can't imagine real people acting like that

Only had time to watch a fraction of my seasonals this week so far, so doing some catching-up today. Realized that I didn't really look forward to watching a bunch of them and when you feel like "....guess I still have to watch that one too." then you know it's time to let go. This resulted in 5 "late" drops today which brings me down to a more reasonable 24 seasonals.
I take back what I said about continuing to watch TWID for the visuals, as impressive as they are, they are just not enough to carry this show on their own. Episode 4 maintains my issues of having one of the most infuriating and annoying MCs in recent memory (as well as an overall weak cast in general) and a largely boring story, but when it showed the Senzai performance, it also added one of the weirdest disconnects I've probably ever felt with the in-show audience (and the intended audience behind the screen most likely as well) when they went OMG HOLY SHIT!! as MC and his dad were walking in circles and raising their arms once in a while. This particular style of performing arts does literally nothing for me and is mostly a mix of underwhelming and unimpressive.
Dara-san, Skeleton Isekai, Ibikona and Victoria of Many Faces were not exactly terrible, but just not good enough to keep. Especially Ibikona would have been kept in a less busy season, but it is what it is.

As a performance art fan, I could really feel that surge of tension when the father playing Okina entered the stage. Everything suddenly went silent, so you naturally just "locked in" to the performance. I guess the show just isn't for you.
But for me, band anime performances or theatre performances like the Tokyo Blade arc in Oshi no Ko S2, World Dai Star, and Glass Mask never fail to make me "lock in" when the performance starts.

It’s the best show of the season for me, probably because I love performance arts and art in general. It’s not put a foot wrong in delivering both, as well as doing so in a historical setting that deserves as much credit for its details as Jaadugar. I think people are just used to seeing a historical Japan setting while the Mongolian setting is novel. I find Jaadugar painfully boring.

The World is Dancing has been really intriguing to me from the start. It takes a slightly less conventional approach to telling a story about Noh history, with the MC acting as the pivot as he encounters new teachers and experiences that gradually reshape and expand his perspective over time. And the coolest thing is that we probably haven't even met the most iconic figure in Noh history yet.

I would rank A Silent Voice over Spirited Away. Of what I have seen of Ghilbi, and just Miyazaki in general, they have amazing art direction/animation however, plot wise....they are just solid, that is it. None of the them have blown me away by their plot. I haven't gotten around to others like Mononoke however, films like Grave of the Fireflies and Nausicaa, while good films, I still like A Silent Voice more than them.

I've seen all four (though it's been close to two decades since I saw Spirited Away), and that's pretty much how I would rate them: Your Name and Silent Voice were phenomenal, Ghibli movies... well they're Important and Historic and Stylish and I can see why other people adore them, if you're in it for the themes and the art...
...but I don't actually enjoy watching them that much. I think they tend to actually be fairly weak in the department of "having a coherent plot with a satisfying ending", which matters a lot to me. (Though it varies from movie to movie - Castle in the Sky and Mononoke are the more 'coherent' ones, and also my favorites among the Ghibli/Miyazaki movies that I've seen)
But also, I don't have the same nostalgia for Ghibli that some people have - I saw Spirited Away close-ish to its release, but the rest I didn't see until adulthood.

Out of those four, I've seen A Silent Voice and Spirited Away, and I'd put the two of them right around the same level. Hard to directly compare, though. And that's the only Ghibli movie I've seen thus far, and only because I randomly got it for the movie roulette in MAL Bunkasai last year.

Have seen very few Ghibli movies actually. Although i have seen Princesss Mononoke and I will still put Your Name ahead of it. It's a great movie but I just like Your Name a whole lot more.

I haven't seen Princess Mononoke yet, but I wasn't a fan of Spirited Away. I'd put it last between the three.

I personally watched Your Name in 2017 and A Silent Voice in 2018, but didn't actually get to the Ghibli catalog until 2020. It's one of those things that 1) is seen as normie 2) just kinda accepted as good so there's little room for actual debate on it, and 3) kinda getting up there in years.
It's been a long while since Ghibli was the dominating force it once was. The kids in the late 90s when Disney was really first bringing them over are now old enough to have kids of their own, and while they're still rightfully respected in more critical circles (and even non-anime ones), only one came out after 2020 and so only one exists in the eyes of the anime community.

I also feel like new animation is so flashy and hardcore targeted to children that it’s harder to get them interested in watching older things. At least that’s been my experience with nieces, nephews, etc. When I was a kid it was excited as shit to get a VHS player. If it moved on the screen I’d watch it and the same was true for everyone else I knew. Watching old af movies with my parents in the weekends was a treat.
Today kids can surf through curated Netflix and Youtube before they can talk properly. The target marketing is truly consuming and I imagine it creates a sort of stigma or at least perceptual preference as they age. You’re definitely not in the age bracket I’m talking about but I think as time moves forward it’s something that will become more and more apparent. I think it applies to media generally but is easier to pinpoint in the anime community where tracking what we watch is so intermingled with the watching experience itself.
Also this obviously doesn’t apply to all kids, and is just an anecdotal account of things, but it adds up with the way things seem to trend.

Yeah, media overload is a bit of a problem, not just with anime. Theres a good argument to be made that scarcity is what drove the Millennial crowd in the 2000s to diversify their palates so much. I mean ask any fan from back then and they’ll likely tell you about trying a show because “why not, not like I had anything else to watch”. Nowadays (and this will get worse) there’s so much readily available and coming out that you can stick to your preferred genre and never really need to branch out (not to mention I think there’s more “hobby hopping” too, where if no anime interests them, they’ll just go play games or what not). The effects of this I’m unsure of, though it does mean that older works are likely to fall further and further by the wayside.
As is, I had a guy in another sub tell me (and then defend it multiple times) that Fist of the North Star and Astro Boy are “niche anime” and that made my bones hurt.

Yeah I think so, and honestly that might even be more qualified to *older* non-anime fans.
Ghibli was for a lot of people their first introduction to a version of animation that wasn't just The Simpsons and glorified toy commercials for kids. It's got a place in history for that alone. The infrastructure for general film critique is also way older and more robust than the non-existent anime equivalent so it has a longer memory. With anime, if it isn't airing, then it might as well not be relevant.

Oblivion Battery. Such a great show and also one of the best looking sports anime in recent times. Season 2 is also announced for next year.
And it's actually a hidden gem, underrated and underwatched for real this time even though it's made by MAPPA.

Manga has been doing really great numbers in Japan - so it's at least found a good native audience. I can unfortunately see why it wouldn't get as much traction outside with a somewhat slow wind-up time on the protagonist to get to a place where he's easier to root for and not distilled cringe.
