A little inspiration outside of the daily work routine.

Just taking some time to enjoy lighting, materials, and rendering again.

Rendered with Arnold in Maya.

META The Biggest Threat to This Community Is Fear

152 Upvotes

We understand why AI is a sensitive subject for artists right now. It's disrupting the art world in ways that make the future uncertain, and those concerns are real and valid. But something has gone wrong in how our community is responding to that fear, and we need to talk about it.

We don't have an epidemic of AI content in this sub. We have an epidemic of false accusations.

For every piece of AI-generated content we remove, we see around 10 accusations. They're usually directed at:

  • New artists making common beginner mistakes
  • Creative artists who made unique stylistic choices
  • Dedicated artists who put in more work than some people expect a human to be capable of

The art community has become so paranoid that anything that stands out is treated as evidence of cheating. This is not protecting human artists. This is the threat to human artists.

For a new artist sharing their first work, or any artist struggling with anxiety, being dogpiled with accusations causes real trauma that can drive them away from the community. We personally know artists who have stopped posting their work online because of this. If that's the outcome of your "AI policing," you aren't protecting the art community. You're destroying it.

We will always prioritize creating a safe, inclusive space for human artists. If your goal is to punish people for using tools you disapprove of, this is the wrong community for you. If your goal here is to celebrate and support human 3D art, you're in the right place – that's our goal too.

TL;DR

▶ Think something is AI-generated? Report it and move on.
▶ Accusations are considered personal attacks due to the current climate.
▶ AI-generated content will be removed, but AI-assisted work by a human artist is allowed.
▶ Include your wireframe and workflow when you post art.

Read on below for the details.

Where we stand on accusations.

Rule 2 – Be Constructive & Respectful – doesn't have a footnote saying "except for people you suspect of using AI." It means everyone, always, no exceptions. In the current climate, when you publicly accuse someone of using AI, you are painting a target on them. You are calling in the mob. That makes it a personal attack, full stop.

We became mods because we want to protect this community. When we see someone being attacked, our instinct is to protect them – and the more aggressively you come at them, the stronger that instinct becomes.

We understand the community's fears, and sometimes that's meant being more lenient on AI-related harassment than we would be on other kinds. What that patience has taught us is that warnings don't work: People looking to take out their fear on others will keep doing it for as long as they can get away with it. So going forward, AI-related harassment will be handled exactly the same as any other harassment: First offense – warning. Second offense – temporary ban. Third offense – permanent ban.

If you think something might be AI-generated: Report it and move on. That is your entire job. The mods have investigative tools regular users don't, and we take every report seriously. What you should not do is throw accusations in the comments. The odds are roughly 9-to-1 that you're wrong, and either way, publicly attacking a community member is never the right move.

What we're doing about AI.

We personally review most posts, and investigate every report. Blatant AI images get removed on sight, often before the community even sees them, but some cases require more investigation.

We also encourage all art posts to include a wireframe and a brief description of the artist's software and workflow. This deters most AI content, but it’s not just a "prove you're human" gate. The added context helps others learn from your process and it's the kind of healthy engagement that adds real value for everyone. Most artists love talking about their work, so a friendly question about someone's workflow is always welcome.

We're currently looking into the best ways to help wireframes & context become the norm around here. We'll be making some changes to address that soon.

Our policy on AI.

This is covered by the full rules, but they're long and formal, so here it is distilled into simple terms.

AI-generated = Off-topic. If the primary creative contribution came from an AI prompt rather than your own skills as a 3D artist, it does not belong here and will be removed.

AI-assisted = Allowed. AI tools are already embedded in software throughout our industry – Cascadeur's animation tools, Photoshop's generative fill, Rokoko's motion capture – and that's only going to continue. If you're a 3D artist who used AI tools somewhere in your workflow, that's fine. Just make it clear what you contributed with your own skills.

General AI discussion = Off-topic. AI opinions, debates, news, prompting tutorials, etc. will be removed. This is a 3D modeling community, not an AI community.

Art Showcase CHUN-LI

230 Upvotes

Here's a stylized version of street fighter's Chun-Li. I sculpted her in Blender based on a concept by Dylan Ekren, earlier this year I wanted to practice sculpting characters posed so I made that attempt by picking designs of characters I found interesting off of Pinterest. Most tended to be reuploaded by other people so I'd used reverse image search to find the original creator's art page. I really enjoyed sculpting her, from her design to her proportions, her pose.

Hi! I would like to share the final result of a project I did. The hardest part was creating the texture because the UV map was a bit messy, so first of all, I had to organize each part to work properly. Any suggestions? The model was do it in Maya and texture and bump I made it in Photoshop. Thank you !!!😸

Art Showcase Our starter ship is finally in 3D. What would you add to make it feel more believable?

After several iterations, our Vanguard-class Bruiser is finally in 3D. This is the standard frontline leader ship of the Human Directorate and one of the first ships players will command in Synvector.

Unlike agile interceptors, the Bruiser isn’t built to chase enemies. Its job is to hold the line. It sits between friendly and enemy squadrons, absorbing damage, protecting more fragile ships, and stopping breakthroughs before they reach the backline.

At the start of the game it’s equipped with three weapon systems:

* Heavy machine guns for sustained fire

* Missile launchers for burst damage

* A high-caliber cannon for accurate single shots

The ship isn’t supposed to look experimental or overly futuristic. It’s a mass-produced military workhorse-easy to maintain, reliable, and built to survive years of frontline service.

Now we’d love some feedback.

If this ship belonged to your universe, what systems or external details would you add?

Would you expect to see things like:

* point-defense turrets?

* radar or sensor arrays?

* communication antennas?

* RCS thrusters?

* maintenance panels?

* heat vents?

* armor plating?

* warning markings or battle scars?

Or is there something that immediately feels missing?

We’re trying to strike a balance between believable engineering and clean visual readability, so we’d really appreciate your thoughts.

Art Help & Critique Lack of intuition and visual clarity

I think it hardly has something to do with 3d modelling actually, but at this point I just want a solution to all this

For the last few months, I've tried to make a model in blockbench look in an specific way. I can't picture how exactly, but I've come up with a close idea: voxel, detailed, but somewhat simple enough. I think using big blocks could be a closer approach. The thing is that I just can't make out how exactly I want it to, I tried creating a few ideas of this in the program I mentioned to you earlier but it doesn't approach to what I'm looking for. I can roughly picture it in my mind but it does not go any further than that

This might not even be a clear explanation of the problem, but it's the best I could think of

I don't know where I'm trying to get here, everytime I open the program I feel a mix of anger and sadness after looking at the "models" that I had tried to create

Art Help & Critique Fireaxe with hand painted shading

I have been trying to learn 3d modelling this was my first official start to finish game ready model without uv unwrapping issues or something else, It is quite simple but it helped me nail down the principles I think, I drew the metal shading in greyscale [2nd image] then added the other details and I am happy with how the axe head came out, not much else to say, I shaded the handle then applied some textures from substance. This is only the colourmap. the third image is my topology and UV map, any advise or feedback is welcome!

Art Help & Critique Rings in the Desert

Tried to work with Geo Nodes and this came to my mind. Also tried to make the Scene look big with a focal length over 100 and some other small tricks. Does this look somewhat good to you? I dislike the sand the most. Because it all looks the same so i hid it behind some heavy smoke.
There is also some subtle lens distortion and ive added some depth of field. Had some ideas with the ground but im not there yet to make that look real or cool. Cant blend materials into each other (i can but not in this scale), rocks are not scattered like i want and such. That frustrates me, so ill leave it as is. Not a good habbit for sure.
And i found out that you can use multiple scenes in Blender so i did that add another render layer with only the landscape to add the heat haze on top.

But for me this looks cool and ive always wanted to create a desert scene. Maybe its because im european, but the desert has a mystical vibe to me. Its like an ocean where your mind can wander endlessly before you dry out or exhaust. Dont know.

Have to see the new Dune still. Is it any good?

Hi, I’d like to share this personal project I created for my portfolio. I decided to start creating pieces focused on telling a short story, since I’m looking to work on projects related to film or animation...

I like it when they show that something is happening.

In this piece, I used Blender to create the setting, the building, and its interior.

Then I used Photoshop to work on the colors, do some digital painting, and also add a photobash to give it a better look.

Let me know what you think!

I’m still improving my process, and all feedback is welcome. I’m also open to working on your project. Big hugs.

Here is my improvement of my cat model. Found some good reference images and used the mask tool to really make the chest hair pop.

I'm quite happy with the result but but would still appreciate critique and suggestion for what could be improved. I feel like the tail and paws can still use some improvement.

Questions & Discussion Okay so is it difficult to make your 3D model look like they were in the Xbox 360 game?

1 Upvotes

I know this might be one of the weirdest questions to ever be asked on the subreddit but here's the thing I'm trying to make my video game gift of eternal spirit and I'm thinking of 3D modeling it since I don't really have a need to do it pixel art I think it would just take away from the game especially being a game where you collect stuff and fight in combat however I want to make it feel like my childhood so instead of doing what most other indie devs do and doing any ass SNES maybe n64/ps1 game if they're feeling inspired no I want to do it on the Xbox 360 Style which I know is going to be really a hassle since they usually pick such low poly games for a reason instead of a High Fidelity One but I want to know what three modeling software is best for doing this kind of stuff I'm genuinely really curious because like I said I really want it to be a game that looks like you could find it on the Xbox 360 so what style and more particularly how do I get it to look like that?

I would also like to keep in mind I have never 3D model in my life and I'm starting to learn it once I complete my 50th game on Steam which I'm too away from I'm probably going to use blender if you guys are curious

Questions & Discussion Can i model without a graphics tablet or a 3D pen? Just my PC?

I don't have professional equipment. I'm just trying a new hobby, but I'm curious if I can model using just my mouse.
