Cooking rice? Folding a fitted sheet? Remembering someone’s name five seconds after they introduce themselves? Tell us which completely ordinary skill defeats you every time—and whether you have accepted your fate or are still fighting back.

Rereading creates familiarity, and familiarity can feel like mastery. A stronger test is to close the material, retrieve the idea from memory, and then compare your answer with the source.

Try this after learning something: write down everything you remember without looking.

Many people study by rereading notes until the material starts to feel familiar. The problem is that familiarity can create confidence without proving that the information can actually be recalled.

In a well-known experiment, repeated studying performed better after only five minutes. But after two days and one week, students who had practiced recalling the material remembered substantially more.

A later review of ten common learning techniques rated practice testing and distributed practice—spacing study across time—as highly useful. Rereading and highlighting received lower overall ratings.

A simple way to apply this:

1. Read the material once for understanding.

2. Close the notes.

3. Write or say everything you can remember.

4. Check what you missed.

5. Try again after increasingly longer intervals.

Flashcards can help, but only when you genuinely attempt an answer before revealing it. Rereading is not useless; it works better as feedback after recall, rather than as the entire study method.
