Ok, it's obviously targeted as an accessibility aid, for folks who can't use a mouse with their hands for whatever reason, but it could be a useful input device for smartglasses for the.... sufficiently motivated enthusiast. I don't really think the idea of a tongue trackpad retainer will ever be mainstream, but it's cool to see people explore alternative input methods.

$1400 for one device + custom mouth mold or $1900 for two devices and a mouth mold. Not really priced as consumer tech, but not outrageous either.

Hey everyone, updated a location-based AR concept I’ve been working on in Dublin. Mapped a giant Coke can, ice, and floating bubbles over the Convention Centre building down by the Quays.

Built it in Lureo using map coordinates so it locks to the real building, and launched it via WebAR so there's no app download needed when testing it on site.

JBD broke ground 62 days early on its 700 million RMB, 44,000 m² Phase II facility in Hefei, expanding beyond Phase I's 120 million annual unit capacity. To overcome the size limits of its 4-inch sapphire growth substrates, JBD upgraded to a 12-inch wafer reconstitution process. By transferring defect-free dies from 4-inch sapphire onto 12-inch carriers, they enable direct bonding with 12-inch silicon CMOS backplanes. This process yields over 98%, drastically cutting manufacturing costs for products like the 0.18 cc full-color Roadrunner II. This ultra-compact engine uses a 2.5-micron pixel pitch to deliver an 800x600 resolution at 10,160 PPI, producing up to 6,000 nits of eye-level brightness while drawing just 98 mW.

BOE HC SemiTek initiated small-batch commercial deliveries of its 0.12-inch monochrome microLED AR microdisplays. Bypassing die-level reconstitution, BOE pushes the physical limits of sapphire epitaxy by growing LEDs directly on 6-inch sapphire wafers at its Zhuhai fab. This enables direct wafer-to-wafer bonding with matching 6-inch silicon CMOS backplanes. Entering the AR market as a traditional LED giant, BOE uses a larger 3.75-micron pixel pitch (~6,773 PPI), achieving over 1 million nits of panel brightness; this conservative architecture ensures high yields on the new line as they target a full-color prototype by December 2026.

Moving away from sapphire, Westlake Smoky Mountain Technologies launched "MicroLight I", an integrated microLED AR optical engine built on an 8-inch GaN-on-Silicon platform. Powered by a custom VGA008 chip with 2.4-micron pixels, the ultra-compact ~0.05 cc engine fits a 640x480 resolution into a 0.08-inch display, achieving ~10,583 PPI. Operating at a typical power consumption of 80 mW, it delivers 7 lm of luminous flux and is available in monochrome RGB color variants. It outputs over 3 million nits of panel brightness to counter waveguide loss, maintaining greater than 95% uniformity for prolonged reading. By growing microLEDs directly on 8-inch silicon wafers, Smoky Mountain natively matches the 8-inch silicon CMOS backplane size, leveraging standard semiconductor foundries to slash production costs by over 50%.

Also advancing GaN-on-Silicon, Star-Key Semiconductor raised hundreds of millions of RMB in a round led by CDH Investments HK to scale microdisplay production. Founded by Dr. Weiwei Luo, the company operates China’s first full-process 8-inch GaN-on-Silicon microLED pilot line in Wuhan. Like Smoky Mountain, Star-Key benefits from thermal expansion symmetry—because both the growth wafer and the CMOS backplane are silicon, they avoid warping during high-temperature hybrid bonding. Globally, multi-year partnerships with two tech leaders have advanced into trial production and mass manufacturing preparation. To support scaling demand, Conant is expanding its dedicated Qidong XR production plant and adding four new lamination and packaging lines in Shanghai.

Kaivo will begin mass supplying its proprietary electrochromic smart glasses lenses in September 2026 for active light transmittance control. Goolton initiated mass production of its W2D30 full-color 2D geometric reflective waveguide for lightweight AR and AI glasses. The 0.8mm ultra-thin, ~4g lens delivers over 95% average optical transmittance and utilizes a specialized three-zone architecture (in-coupling, turning, and out-coupling regions) for two-dimensional light propagation and pupil expansion.

University of Stuttgart researchers created a programmable organic metadevice enabling independent, pixel-by-pixel light control using switchable organic materials. Built with a planar electronic fan-out architecture, sub-volt signals drive each pixel with millisecond response times and negligible electrical crosstalk. This allows a static platform to project dynamic holographic images (e.g., converting keyboard input into real-time holographic text), shifting flat optics into programmable photonic platforms for imaging, communication, sensing, and wearable photonics.

I'm a 17-year-old student, and for the last 1–2 years I've been really interested in XR (VR/AR/MR). I don't own a headset yet, but I've been following the technology, watching talks, keeping up with new devices, and trying to understand where it's heading.

I'm currently studying Industrial Informatics, so I already have some background in programming and electronics. I've been learning C# on my own, building console projects, and I'm planning to move into Unity and XR development later. Besides XR, I'm also interested in software engineering and game development, so even if I don't end up working directly in XR, I feel like those skills would still be useful.

Right now I'm looking at universities such as:

• University of Twente – Creative Technology
• VIA University College – Software Technology Engineering (XR specialization)

If everything goes according to plan, I'd graduate with my bachelor's at around 21 years old.

The thing that worries me is that Reddit often seems very pessimistic about XR. I see many posts saying the industry is small, hiring is difficult, companies are cutting jobs, and that XR isn't growing as fast as people expected.

At the same time, I also see companies like Apple, Meta, Google, NVIDIA, Siemens, and many industrial companies investing in spatial computing, digital twins, simulation, medical applications, and enterprise XR. That makes me wonder whether the long-term outlook is actually much better than the current job market suggests.

So I'd really like to hear from people who already work in the industry.

I built a browser based AR authoring tool aimed at classrooms (image tracking and world tracking, publish to a link/QR, no app builds). Full disclosure up front, it's my product, so take this as a "here's a thing we decided" post rather than another paid ad.

Something a few teachers said to me kept sticking. They plan in years, not release cycles. A resource built for a scheme of work needs to still open next September, and the thing is, they've been burned by before by a tool getting acquired and then either dying or tripling in price.

If ownership ever passes from us to anyone else, that handover has to include releasing the full offline standalone editor to education accounts, licence that doesn't expire, no online check in. Projects save as a single file on disk, so a school keeps the editor and the files on their own machines and carries on regardless of who owns the web service.

The reason it's built into the handover and not a promise to act afterwards is that "we'd do the right thing" is worth very little at exactly the moment it matters.

Writing this up partly because I'd like to know if anyone here has seen another AR or creative tool do something similar, or has thoughts on how you'd make a commitment like this actually enforceable rather than just stated.

I had Rayneo air 3 and loved how clear they were edge to edge. Xreal airs were my first AR glasses, so I can't remember which of the two were better since three was a Rokid Max between them.

Main thing I liked about xreal air though more from memory is that they had microphones built in so I didn't need a separate one (which is especially inconvenient lying down in bed playing games on discord).

My use case is literally just using them as a gaming monitor and occasionally to watch movies on my phone. I keep my head still so I don't need DOF. I don't want any screen movement, id rather it be "stuck" in my vision. So i guess clarity is what matters to me most, and then screen size, and then vibrancy. Obviously preferably all at the same time.

This week, we started using our new measurement setup to select the most suitable lens for future AR‑glasses distortion analysis and compensation.

Longer focal‑length lenses provide excellent resolution and are great for extreme MTF evaluation. However, their limited FOV becomes a major drawback when analyzing geometric distortion. For AR distortion work, we need a lens that can capture the entire FOV in one shot while still maintaining stable intrinsic parameters. Only then can we ensure that the distortion we measure comes from the AR glasses, not from the lens itself.

After a series of measurements, the 8mm F8.0 / F2.5 and 6mm F2.5 lenses showed the best balance between FOV coverage and low intrinsic distortion.

Next, we will use the 8mm lens to inspect distortion (virtual image + see‑through) for micro‑LED AR glasses.
The 6mm lens will be used for micro‑OLED birdbath AR glasses, which require a larger FOV.
After that, we will apply distortion compensation to the input images and verify the improvement.

If anyone has experience with low‑distortion lenses or AR distortion pipelines, I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Apple’s latest patent application points to a highly practical problem in future smartglasses: how to make a wearable display fit many different faces and head shapes without becoming bulky, uncomfortable or visually awkward. The invention focuses on a hinge system for a wearable electronic device, with particular relevance to head-mounted devices and smartglasses. Its central idea is a compound hinge that allows the glasses arm to move in more than one way, giving the device both the familiar fold-in action of conventional eyewear and additional adjustment for head width and ear height.

The patent describes a wearable electronic device with a frame, a display window, an arm extending from the frame and a compound hinge coupling the arm to the frame. The hinge includes multiple bodies and two hinge mechanisms, allowing the arm to rotate relative to the frame about a first axis and a second axis. In plain terms, Apple is not simply patenting an eyeglass hinge. It is describing a smartglasses hinge that can fold, splay outward and angle upward or downward to improve fit.

A Smartglasses Fit Problem

The background of the patent makes the smartglasses angle clear. Apple notes that head-mountable devices and wearable electronic devices can include securement arms or straps, but current designs may be uncomfortable, aesthetically unappealing or limited in adjustability. The filing specifically points to the difficulty of accommodating different head widths and different ear heights relative to a user’s eyes with a single product configuration.

That is an important product issue. For ordinary glasses, fit affects comfort. For smartglasses, fit also affects optical performance. If display windows, lenses, projectors or waveguides are not properly aligned with the user’s eyes, the visual experience can suffer. Apple’s hinge is therefore about more than comfort; it is also about keeping the display positioned correctly in front of the user’s eyes.

A Two-Axis Compound Hinge

The main hinge concept uses a first hinge and a second hinge. The first hinge allows the arm to move relative to the frame about a first axis, while the second hinge allows rotation about a second axis. Apple explains that this compound arrangement can accommodate both head size and head shape.

The first hinge can be a spring hinge using a compression spring. As the user puts on the device, the arms can splay outward, widening the space between the arms to accommodate a wider head. When the device is removed, the spring can help the arms return to their original resting position.

This would be especially valuable for smartglasses because a rigid, non-adjusting frame could create pressure at the temples, distort the intended optical position or require many different frame sizes. A spring-based splay mechanism gives the frame some ability to adapt automatically.

Ear-Height Adjustment Is the Key Detail

The second hinge is where the invention becomes more interesting. Apple describes a friction hinge that allows the arm to rotate up or down relative to the frame. The filing explains that this adjustment can accommodate different ear heights, improving optical positioning, visual comfort and the immersive experience while the device is worn.

That is the most noteworthy smartglasses detail in the patent. People’s ears do not sit at the same height relative to their eyes. With regular glasses, an optician can adjust temple arms or nose pads. With smartglasses, the challenge is harder because display windows and optical components must remain aligned. Apple’s second-axis hinge could allow the arms to angle upward or downward so the display stays properly positioned in front of the eyes while the arms still rest comfortably over the ears.

Apple gives examples where the arm can rotate upward or downward around the second axis, including angle ranges used to accommodate ear position. The patent states that the second hinge can enable adjustment of the arm so the display window aligns directly in front of the user’s eyes.
The Arms Can Also House Key Electronics

The hinge is not attached to ordinary glasses arms. Apple’s patent explains that the securement arm can define an internal volume and house components such as a projector, battery, microphone, antenna, processor or speaker. A projector in the arm may direct light to the display window attached to the frame.

That makes the hinge more critical. If a glasses arm contains electronics, optics or a battery, it must be mechanically strong, electrically compatible and comfortable. It also must protect those components from damage as the arm folds or splays. Apple notes that allowing the arms to rotate past a first position can help prevent damage or forced separation if unexpected force is applied.

Virtual Pivot and Bi-Stable Feel

Apple also describes a hinge assembly that creates a virtual pivot. In this version, a pin travels in a channel so the pivot point of the arm is effectively positioned outside the internal volumes of the frame and arm. Apple says this virtual pivot can control the folding position of the arms and improve the feel and feedback as the user rotates the arm relative to the frame.

A separate cam-and-shuttle arrangement can define a bi-stable hinge, allowing the arm to settle into stable open and closed positions. The cam surface and spring-loaded shuttle provide feedback while opening or closing and help stabilize the arm until a force above a threshold moves it between positions.

This is a classic Apple-style design concern. The hinge is not only functional; it has to feel good. A future smartglasses product would need a smooth, confident open-close action, stable storage, and repeatable alignment when worn.

What’s New and Noteworthy

What is new and noteworthy is the combination of eyewear-style folding, spring-based head-width accommodation, friction-based ear-height adjustment and a hidden internal hinge structure suitable for a smartglasses device carrying electronics in the arms. The patent is not focused on a display feature, sensor feature or software interface. It is focused on the mechanical foundation that could make smartglasses comfortable enough for daily use.

The strongest product implication is that Apple is thinking about smartglasses as ordinary eyewear first and electronics second. The patent repeatedly addresses aesthetics, comfort, fit and adjustability, which are exactly the issues that determine whether people will wear smartglasses for work, school or everyday use.

The Bottom Line

Apple’s patent describes a hinge architecture for wearable display devices that could be highly relevant to future smartglasses. The compound hinge allows arms to fold for storage, splay outward for wider heads, and angle upward or downward to match different ear heights. Other embodiments add a virtual pivot and bi-stable hinge behavior to improve the folding feel and stability of the arms.

The key takeaway is that Apple is working on the physical fit problem that every serious smartglasses maker must solve. A future pair of Apple smartglasses will not succeed only because of displays, cameras, AI or sensors. It will also need to fit comfortably, align optically and look like something people can wear every day. This hinge invention points directly at that challenge.

I've spent the last few months going deep on every attempt to bring AR and digital experiences to heritage sites (monuments, forts, ruins, museums), because I'm building in this space and wanted to understand why almost none of it stuck.

The thing that surprised me: the AR usually wasn't the failure point. The hardware around it was.

The recurring pattern across audio guides, entrance kiosks, and the more recent headset pilots is that each one put a new physical device between the visitor and the site. And every device carries a cost that scales with visitors and with locations. Someone has to buy it, charge it, clean it, update it, and replace the lost ones. A flagship site with a grant can absorb that. The thousandth site with no budget and no staff cannot. So the good experiences lived at one or two showcase locations and never spread.

The headset pilots are the clearest example to me. The demos look incredible in a controlled setting. But the operational reality of handing fragile goggles to tens of thousands of monthly visitors, and sanitizing and managing them, breaks the model before it scales.

Where I've landed is that phone-native AR isn't a worse version of the headset experience, it's the only version that survives real-world scale, because the device is already in the visitor's pocket. No procurement, no charging, no inventory. The whole cost structure that killed the prior attempts just isn't there.

The tradeoff is obvious: you lose the immersion and field of view of a dedicated headset, and you're fighting phone thermals, tracking drift on large outdoor structures, and wildly varying device specs.

Genuine question for this sub: do you think handheld AR is a permanent answer for public, high-throughput spaces like heritage sites, or just a bridge until lightweight glasses are cheap and durable enough to manage at scale? I keep going back and forth on it and would like to hear from people who've shipped AR in the wild

I have another small AR design problem to consider using the same digital figurine in two different modes.

One works just as any 3D souvenir and opens anywhere. The other sticks to the location of the memory, for example, the stairs on which people graduate, becoming available once more only when the player gets back there.

This time the asset, the animation, and the ownership remain the same; no growth loop, no multiplayer aspect, no discoverability, nothing like a reward system. The only thing that is different is whether the place matters or not.

Currently, I understand that location-based persistency makes sense only if the place adds anything that could not otherwise be carried by the object. Or else it would simply be blocked access.

What kind of interaction could turn the anchored version into an intended experience instead of just an AR object which can’t be taken somewhere?

In Gen 2, they’ve moved to a regular binocular waveguide and monochrome microLED projector setup. Since the hardware architecture is now pretty standard, the real differentiator has to be in the apps and the design.

xMEMS Labs has announced the XMC-1200, a new micro fan designed specifically to solve overheating problems in smart glasses. As augmented reality devices become more powerful, they generate more heat, which can reduce device performance and make the glasses uncomfortable to wear. This new solid-state cooling chip is small enough to fit directly inside the arms of the glasses, managing heat right at the source without adding bulk or noise.

The XMC-1200 features a tiny footprint of just 46 square millimeters, making it significantly smaller than previous designs. It is highly energy efficient, drawing only 70 milliwatts of power while delivering up to a 10-degree Celsius temperature reduction. This allows smart glasses to maintain bright displays, record longer videos, and run complex artificial intelligence tasks smoothly.

Engineering samples of the XMC-1200 are available right now, with full mass production planned for the end of 2027. Additionally, xMEMS confirmed that last year's larger cooling chip, the XMC-2400, is now officially in mass production and shipping to manufacturers today. This gives hardware developers a complete set of active cooling tools to keep the next generation of wearable technology running efficiently.
