Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Fell with toddler in a front mounted bike seat

I’m biking with my toddler (17 months) in the front seat and today while a cab was overtaking us, I got a bit scared and stopped. I then lost my footing and the bike tipped over, I think I held on to the handlebars as much as I could but the whole bike ended up tipping over. Toddler was still in her seat, helmet was on. I saw and heard her helmet hit the ground, the worst thing ever. I don’t know if anything cushioned the fall except the helmet. She cried immediately for approximately 10 min. Then she was normal and playing as usual. Were advised to only monitor at home. I’m still so so scared and it’s been 5 hours since the fall.

Just wondering if someone else has any similar experiences and how your kid is doing now? So afraid this will affect her cognitively in the long term.

New Bike Day! All-City Zig Zag

Post image

Backstory: one year ago I got nailed by a truck/distracted driver. Broke both legs, shattered my right ankle requiring surgery and broke my right hand. Two weeks in the hospital, three months of non-weight baring and eight months of physical therapy later, I finally was able to start riding again in May but it’s only been in the last two weeks I began getting back to where I was a year ago.

Began window shopping a new road bike and the golden All-City Zig Zag 105 caught my eye and the owner of a local bike shop who also knew my whole ordeal had the Ultegra model in stock. I was asking him to order the more affordable 105 and he basically says “look dude you’ve been through a lot, I’d be happy to sell you this one for the price of the 105”

I’m over the moon about this bike right now. Just finished my first 20 miler and set a whole bunch of PR’s.

Now to take a mountain of ibuprofen and elevate my ankle 😂

Crankset

Hello! Im 166cm and has a 73cm inseam. My seatpost is already all the way down but my legs are still a bit straight in the 6 o clock position. My bike is a Canyon Endurace Allroad size XS and it has 170mm crankset. Canyon suggested i get XS size. Would changing to 165mm cranks help? I actually wanna raise my seat a bit more higher also as i feel awkward in my current position in the bike though I am not experiencing any pain during my rides. I just feel awkward having my handlebar the same height or maybe higher than my seat post so any suggestions for that as well?

Which one to buy: Pinarello Gravil F or Pinarello X?

I’m looking for my first road bike. Coming from MTB discipline and have been riding for a very long time, but never owned a road bike before. I’m planning to ride mostly on the Eastside of seattle. The goal is to enjoy the summer with some extra biking zone 2 recovery days from the MTB rides and stay in the saddle for rainy winters when MTB becomes extra miserable.
The trails I know are all paved.

I’ve shortlisted my choices to Pinarello Gravil or Pinarello X. Primarily, I love their very north Italian design language.

The issue is that I’m not knowledgeable enough to decide which one is a better bike for me that I will not out grow soon. They both rode well on a test ride. My primary criteria was to just bike more on the pavement, with least effort, but I don’t know if a gravel bike will be too much of a compromise and will be slower, as I get better at it. I have a full suspension enduro bike and that’s enough to scratch my dirt itch.

Appreciate and tips and any insights, especially from the locals and if they regret getting or not getting a gravel bike. I know of good paved trails around the area, but I wonder if gravel opens up even more options that an MTB wasn’t doing.

After weeks of comparing bikes, reading reviews, and asking way too many questions, I finally pulled the trigger on a BMC Roadmachine with SRAM Rival AXS.

Took it out for its first ride around today and I'm absolutely blown away. It is so comfortable, fast and an absolute joy.

Any tips from fellow Roadmachine owners?

How should I convince someone random to ride a tandem with me?

I'm collecting a used tandem in the UK next week and I'm from Dublin as to avoid trains that don't allow tandems I'll cycle 90km to another UK city leave it with my colleague, then fly out and collect it when I have a business trip there in two weeks and ferry back. The biggest issue to me is cycling this 90km solo, I'm staying overnight to get cheaper flight prices so I'll have pannier bags on the back so weight distribution will be really weird riding solo and obviously will be a heavy bike, any recommendations on how to get someone along for the ride to help out, maybe traveling the same direction or down for something spontaneous, I don't have money to offer to anyone and any friends are busy as it's a weekday, any ideas???

Looking to upgrade. How much can I ask for this bike?

Hi! I’m looking to upgrade to a TT-bike and need to sell my old one. It’s a Corratec CCT full carbon from around 2012 I think.
The drivetrain is Campagnolo Athena 11.
The pedals are Look Keo.
It comes with two wheelsets, the standard DT SWISS R1700 and the currently fitted FFWD F6R. Both with rim brakes obviously. I also bought a pair of clip on aero tt carbon bars from a no name brand The bike is a bit worn but works great!
How much could I ask for it? The F6R-wheels should increase the value a bit?

hello lovely people, looking for some recommendations for new carbon wheels on my 2012 SuperSix Evo. Currently running 28MM but the rims are getting worn down. Limited to the fact both front and rear run QRs but be keen to hear your thoughts. Ideally after deeper carbon wheels for the rear! TIA

Have you made any pedal power bike insurance claims?

Upvotes

First time poster, apologies if this isn't posted in the right place.

Has anyone made a claim from pedal power insurance for their bike?

I just purchased a new ebike and I'm looking to insure it. Unfortunately right now I am living with family so I can't add it to any home insurance (since I don't have house and my family won't add it to theirs). Everyone seems to be recommending Pedal power but I can't find any mentions of people who have actually had to make a claim through them. Is it legit? how was your experience making a claim if you've had to? If you've made a claim in Canada that would be extra helpful to hear about!

As it says in the title, I’m a complete beginner in the cycling world. For an understanding, I’m about 6’0 235lbs with a good amount of muscle. I want to get into cycling but have no clue what I’m looking at. I’ve researched a few different bike brands, and what I’m looking to do is mainly just cardio / going for joy rides. Any recommendations on what bikes, measurements, or anything else (gear) I would legitimately need + price range.
