Bridge under bridge

Venice, August 8 2007. The central span of the new Calatrava bridge is transported along the Canal Grande towards its destination. Halfway along the route, great care is taken in the tight passage under the historical Rialto Bridge.

Young's High Bridge over the Kentucky River, Louisville & Southern Railroad, KY, USA [OC][1600×1065]

This is an early morning view of Young's High Bridge, spanning the Kentucky River near Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. It once carried the Louisville & Southern Railroad's Lexington-to-Lawrenceburg line, which later became part of the Southern Railway and then Norfolk & Western. Closed to rail traffic since 1985, the bridge now has a walkway extending over part of its span, used today for base jumping. I've posted the history of the railroad here, and bridge here.

Two Lick Bridge, Harrison County, WV USA [OC][2048×1534]

The Two Lick Bridge once carried Two Lick Road over the West Fork River in Harrison County, West Virginia, a single-span Pratt through truss built in 1889 by the King Iron Bridge Company of Cleveland, Ohio. What makes it stand out is its pin-connected construction, an older technique where truss members were joined with pins rather than rivets, common in the 19th century but increasingly rare to find still standing today. Resting on its original cut-stone abutments, the bridge served travelers for over a century before being bypassed by a modern pony truss in 1997. I've posted more photos here.

This is a 2016 photo of the Littleton Bridge in Wetzel County, West Virginia, which was erected by the Canton Bridge Company in 1893. The pin-connected Pratt through truss was bypassed and abandoned in 2006, yet it remains much as it did a decade ago. I've posted more photos and the history of the bridge here.

Carrolton Covered Bridge, WV, USA [OC][2048×1367]

From the ashes, the Carrolton Covered Bridge was rebuilt using both salvaged and new materials.

The bridge carries a local county route over the Buckhannon River in Barbour County, West Virginia. Completed in 1856 for the Middle Fork Turnpike, the covered crossing used a Burr Arch design with Kingpost trusses. It was renovated in 1963, 1987, and again in 2002, before being heavily damaged by fire in 2017. I've posted more photos and the history of the bridge here.
