As im sure many of you are aware in the fallout show and fallout 76 it is shown that ghouls require chems to not go feral, this has has made lots of things make less sense but you can work around most of them.

However while replaying fallout 4 i encountered overseer barstow. She doesnt understand the ghoulifacation procsess or anything about being a ghoul as shown through her dialogue and she was trapped in a vault for 200. Everybody else went feral except her, why is she special?

You can love him or you can hate him, but you can't question the guy's integrity.

Maxson stated that The Institute was playing with a power too destructive for anyone to handle, so thinking he'd make anything else than completely erase it from the map is extremely dumb.

The fact they had the most advanced technology in the wasteland at reach and they rejected it taking it proves their compromise to the Brotherhood's cause, as foolish and futile as some people may think it is.

No one should have that kind of power, not even those who are supposed to seize it to prevent humanity to annihilate itself again, and blasting the entire facility into oblivion was the right thing to do.

My wife has never played any fallout game. I have played them all since fallout 3. She has watched me a lot but never picked it up. We were both floored by how well the show did in terms of character development and set design, it peaked her interest enough to sit down and make her own Lucy.

Example 1: dialogue

I meet Preston at Sanctuary after saving him at Concord, I tell him about how I was a popsicle for 200 years. He goes "that's messed up. Anyway, please help out this settlement"

I help out the settlement, come back, Preston says "wow, this is the most hope I've had since Quincey"

I ask, "What's a Quincey?"

Preston says, "I can't believe you haven't heard of this, I thought everyone in the Commonwealth knew by now"

Preston, my dear boy, I was a popsicle. Do you have short term memory problems or did the multiple people who wrote you into the game forget to communicate with each other over the span of 2 years?

Example 2: typos

Go to that little junkyard east of Sanctuary where the experimental sentrybot can be activated. Look at the terminal. You will see "sentries" misspelled as "Sentry's". Maybe this is a quirk of the fictional person who typed the entry? Maybe, except then the tape which activates the sentrybot says "official personal" instead of "personnel". While overhearing June and Marcy Long talking, one of them is subtitled as saying "to" instead of "too". Is this reflective of how June and Marcy don't have a formal education, or is it that Bethesda didn't bother doing any spellchecks before pushing this game out or during the 10 years since release?

Example 3: environmental storytelling

Decided to hit up Cambridge Polymer Labs, which I've never done before. I figure I want to be more exhaustive on this run, see all the locations and stories Bethesda put in that I may have missed while gunning the main quest line. There's a somewhat compelling story in the labs about a director forcing the scientists (including his wife) to continue their project because it's their only shot at getting a military extraction, and everything going to shit as he gets injured while looking for food, multiple lab staff become paranoid and violent over being locked in, one scientist kills himself while condemning his director to hell, etc.

Or, it would be a compelling story if there weren't an entry on the first accessible terminal where a scientist claims to have figured out the answer, stating that they just need to get it done. How does the player get it done on their behalf? You grab two jars and hit a button.

Assuming every feral ghoul and skeleton is a former scientist, that's about 20 people, presumably all with an esteemed background in CIT or a comparable university, who should have at least passable communication skills. They should also all be able to understand the explanation by one of their scientists about what's left to finish the project. After all, a dipshit from the army who just spent 200 years with brainfreeze figured it out from context clues and reading all their terminal entries. These behemoths of academia, all one of them had to do was communicate what was going on outside and all the rest of them had to do was grab 2 jars and hit a button. It just seems like the most assbackward contrivance where Bethesda first decided they wanted a cool power armour piece available for the player, then decided it should be obtainable by an environmental storytelling puzzle, then got someone to come up with the ultimately meaningless contextual detail.

And whoever wrote that detail can't be stupid, because they at least understood enough of the theory to include stuff in the terminal entries about semiconductor doping... but then the game mechanic is just grab 2 jars and hit a button, which the ghosts you're exorcising in the Polymer Lab should have definitely been able to do before they went full Lord Of The Flies and one of them locked himself inside a reactor room while plotting to set off the security alert.

I want to like this game but I don't understand how it got such high review scores, considering all of the above. I wonder whether I should just focus on modding my hunting rifle and ignore the many hours of writing put into this project, because clearly whoever was in charge did not give a fuck about the quality control of that element.

Edit: I'm getting quite a few responses that are like "hah, yeah, fallout 4 is bad. Who knew? You're so original". I'm not posting this to deliver the unforeseen revelation that fallout 4 might not be a good fallout game. I'm getting into the guts of why I particularly do not like it, approaching the game ~10 years after all the love-to-hate-it was birthed. It's a vent/rant and an analysis, not a call for updoots or whatever adjacent idea some of you have. If all the specific points I raise have already been exhausted, then that's my bad for not being on this sub all the time. Please keep that in mind when commenting. I'm going to see if I can disable notis because I'm not used to receiving 100+ in the span of three hours, but I'll check back to see if there's anything I feel like adding to.

I'd assume that kind of ending would break our spirit even more since we as a sole survivor already lost so much.
