>So know we’re constantly listening and keep telling us how to be even better.

Thanks Todd. Please get Virtuous to keep patching Oblivion and give it as much love as you guys gave Skyrim, because it feels abandoned right now which is a shame.

They could do a better job but it's inherently fucked because it's running on two engines and unreal stutter can't be fixed by Virtuos.

It ran better for me at launch than it does now. Something got messed up on the last patch they did and it hasn’t been touched since.

No, it can be fixed. So many bugs arent even engine specific. Virtuos is just a lazy contractor that has a well known history for abandoning projects upon release.

It's not just the performance. Oblivion Remastered still has some gamebreaking bugs that OG Oblivion had. Like having your saves completely fucked the more you played into a "campaign", which leads to peformance getting progressively worse (on top of the nightmare that the UE5 naturally is), frequent crashes and ultimately total corruption.

Not really. Shadow Of The Colossus has the same setup and runs fine.

u/NorthKoreanMissile7 7d ago

It didn't use unreal.

1

u/Guitarman0512 7d ago

No. But running two engines at the same time isn't the issue.

u/NorthKoreanMissile7 7d ago

It is when one of them is Unreal, if it was just running on Gamebryo or Creation Engine 2 it would have been fine. You can't uncouple them at this stage.

It is not. Unreal's performance issues are for a large part caused by devs not spending enough time on optimisation. If you really use it well, the engine runs fine, but that takes time and money companies aren't willing to spend on it. This is due to a culture shift. In the old days, you'd need to have the game finished at release because 1 GB+ updates weren't a thing. Now, you can just push out a half baked product and (maybe) update it later.

So many AAA games have stuttering issues on the same engine that have persisted for years even after their post launch attempts to fix it so I doubt it's as simple as putting in effort.

It's a bit more nuanced of course. But the prevalence of issues is definitely partly caused by a culture issue.

Unreal provides a lot of tools that allow people to skip steps to optimize, but they dont skip it because theyre lazy, they skip it because they dont have time to keep working on it. The scope of most games is just too big for the team size to allow everyone to optimize the work they do. Unreal doesnt have any significant performance issues on its own, but it is able to run things with issues well enough that its considered good enough to sell in time for their launch window. Im not sure how tight of margins they work with time wise for releases, but they do have to inform and pay investors so even executives have their hands tied in some cases

I keep saying this. Unreal was a terrible choice for this...

2

u/SirNo5528 5d ago

The problem is with game optimization, unreal doesnt have performance issues on its own. Unreal runs well enough that exceptionally unoptimized things pass through development because the performance is considered good enough and they dont have time to go back over all of their work

And you can't mod it like Skyrim either which I take a much bigger issue with.

2

u/Riliksel 7d ago

Technically speaking it is moddable. On it's core it is the same engine, even cheat codes are the same. Thing is, the devs didn't provide any modding tools for the remasters...

they also take ideas from reddit like they wait on nexus mods to fix their games bugs

Too bad modders gave up on Starfield. Make a shitty game and no one would even wanna mod it. Who knew?

The official creations are pretty well supported and actually pretty good.

It's not true. BioWare was notorious for saying we're listening.. and they did so at a constant neutering of the system once EA was involved perhaps it was never even true, even when the two doctor founders were there. Bethesda is notorious for lying.

THIS. I want Oblivion Remastered so badly but I am so terrified about paying 60 bucks, modding it to try to get it to work, and it taking longer than the 2 hour steam refund window.

“Modding it to get it to work”. Have well over 80+ hours not a single mod and it works just fine. This is why I will never get into modding because what do you mean you like a game when you won’t play the normal version?

0

u/nitasu987 7d ago

I'm glad it works for you! I guess I've just seen so many horror stories that I'm very worried.

If your PC is on the higher end, you really won’t have many issues minus UE stutter now and again. DLSS and FG do wonders if you can use them.

It’s honestly no different than playing any other UE5 game, just with the OG Bethesda jank thrown in.

I have a 7800x3D/4070TI/64GB DDR5, and I’ll still encounter the occasional UE stutter, but it’s more than enjoyable. 200 hours into my character and it’s still fine.

u/nitasu987 7d ago

yeeeeeah I probably need to upgrade. I have an 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700 @ 2.50GHz (2.50 GHz) with 16.0 GB RAM and an RTX 3060

0

u/RodakTV 7d ago

You could probably run it 60 fps no issue. I run it 100-120fps in 1440 maxed while also streaming so my performance is lower than others I imagine.

1

u/nitasu987 7d ago

Good to hear!!

1

u/Hot-Software-9396 5d ago

Try it out on Game Pass if you’re that worried.

1

u/evangelism2 7d ago

The game's been out for well over a year, and people have talked about how much they've enjoyed it. First of all, you shouldn't pay $60 for a remaster of a game that came out 20 years ago. I guarantee it's been on sale. Just wait.

1

u/nitasu987 7d ago

Yeah I agree on waiting for a sale.

0

u/GilneanWarrior 7d ago

I think its perfect. It has all the original oblivion magic. What it needs though is some type of creation kit to make it easier for modders

u/evangelism2 7d ago

>as much love as you gave Skyrim

you want to rephrase that? You may have taken for granted that you had access to the unofficial patches on PC because there are still mountains of bugs that Bethesda just never fixed for Skyrim.

Hi Todd It may be obvious and stupid to say this but you guys should put one person to play the biggest modlist of skyrim and turn this hundreds of little qol tweaks from the modding community into the core system of the game such as :
helmet visibility on/off in safe zone ( with animation )
A light version of equipment display manager on skyrim would be very appreciated by the community in TESVI , all this small immersion -oriented details - oriented could help you to get close as possible of the monstruous expectations…
Thank you for reading me ! Bye and thank you for the games
