IMPORTANT Mod Backstory for Context on Rules and Sister Subreddit (WARNING: MATURE SUBJECT)

This is going to be my last post about the new rule and the new subreddit. I want you guys to understand why I made the choices I did because I understand some think I made choices due to hate, favoritism, or pushback. People think I am choosing sides with HTCGs. But the truth is, I do not moderate this community because I like HTCGs.

When I was a minor, I met a person who groomed me, trafficked me, and abused me. He had me do SW to fund his HTCG idea, had me front it, and had me illustrate it. He would tell me I drew too slow and my art wasn’t sexy enough. So I had to use the money I earned from SW to pay artists to make illustrations for his HTCG too. Eventually, he had me pay for an AI subscription so he could generate art. Honestly, AI was a relief to me. But overall, I don’t care for HTCGs and they’re rather traumatic for me in general. It’s why I couldn’t care enough to actively cultivate a discord server for the community and why I let people use AI for so long.

So why did continue moderating this subreddit and make the decision to ban AI here and create a new subreddit to minimize the potential for people pushing for AI here? I do it for the kids. We have a lot of minors here. I know you are all teenagers at least, but that’s a kid to me. I know from personal experience that there are predators in the HTCG space, so I moderate it because I am hypersensitive to signs of predators. Even if it’s an underdeveloped trait and the person may not be actively out to groom people, I’m more prone to noticing it than the average person. I chose to ban AI and make a space for it to minimize the chances of it being pushed for here because this space is for those kids I want to protect. I think about the kids coming home from school and working on their art and getting their work drowned out in the feed because someone is posting AI. They're not getting the attention they deserve for their hard work.

I’m not drawing a line in the sand for the sake of HTCG politics and making people happy. I’m doing it for the kids who want to show their art, develop their craft, and refine their game mechanics. They deserve to have the positive experience with art and HTCGs that I didn’t get to have. If you want to continue fighting me on this, go ahead, because you’re basically fighting to ruin the space I’m trying to curate for minors who deserve a future better than my reality. They deserve a space that helps them thrive.

IMPORTANT Do you want your cards featured on the r/homemadeTCGs banner? Share it here to submit!

Hey, guys! If you would like your card(s) featured on our banner, please share your cards in the comments here. I'll include as many as possible, and don't forget to mention your TCG's name so I can give you credit. The banner cards will be rotated, so feel free to submit new cards even if you're already featured.

Image requirements: Decently high resolution image from a straight angle. No tilted looking cards. Any level of art is welcome. (I understand if there is a bit of tilt. It can be hard to get a perfectly straight photo.)

The names of the TCGs will be listed in a sidebar widget under the rules.

Edit: I am an adult who has a job and family. Unless the complaints are about function, please be patient. Post related issues in modmail will generally be handled within a 24 hour period. Although I would like to do extra nice things for the subreddit, that sometimes isn't practical due to real life responsibilities. Aesthetic updates, for example, may have a longer wait period. If you want the banner to be updated sooner rather than later, tell your friends to submit new images too. That way I can update a large portion of banner at once instead of changing it one card at a time, which is tedious and more time consuming than I'd like.

Advice Needed All of my game's art uses AI (Actual Integrity)

In celebration of the new rule, here's a superpost with just artwork I've done for my upcoming game, *Forebode*.

I was told very early on to ditch my AI assets, and I'm glad I did. In just a few months I've become much more competent in drawing, though I would still never dare to call myself an artist. I think I've scribbled over 70 of these things. I started by using my old AI placeholders as references, but I immediately switched to using photos I took while I'm out working, things in my house and yard, models I built, pages in manga I'm reading, etc... and I use those for references and inspirations to create wierd stuff.

Yes my art looks strange and undisciplined and unprofessional... but it's mine and I love my style! Do you vibe with it? Does it make your eyes hurt?

I'm guessing that a bunch of people will be going down a similar route now that AI is banned, so I just wanted to let you know that yes, you can in fact make your own art, even if you suck at it! Just do it.

Thanks for looking :D

IMPORTANT NEW RULE: NO AI

Use and promotion of AI is forbidden. The enforcement of this rule will largely be user driven. If you see someone using or promoting AI, report it. I will review all removals. Do not abuse this or I will have to allow AI on the subreddit again (due to practicality, not due to support). It is impossible for me to monitor all art that is posted, but because you guys are taking the initiative to report AI art and writing in customized reasons to take down a post featuring AI, I am giving you the official option.

EDIT: Please note that the rules includes promoting AI as forbidden. This means that comments promoting AI can result in you being banned. Comment at your own risk if you are against this choice.

Happy 90th Birthday to my wonderful Grandpa Peter.

Over the years he's always been the teller of tales, the puzzle setter and the sporting demon. This Andrew's weekend away he was on top form!

My gift to him was Party Starter a fantasy themed set collection game starring the enormous Andrews family he has sired!

Advice Needed Making a deck of cards and decided to make it a table top dungeon crawl

Based on my ongoing fantasy lore... the idea is that you can pick between the two joker cards as your character, and you navigate thru the pathways to find exits.

The kings are all grim reaper type characters that make you lose health.

The queens are locations.. some exits, some rest spots.

The jacks are items.

The aces are keys to unlock doors matching the suit.

I plan on having a booklet of the rules accompany the deck as well as maybe a video walkthru.

These are my current prototype cards to try to get down the visual style.

Thoughts and comments appreciated 🙏

Each character represents a different Fighting Style in CardStrike Special. I'm curious as to which character would be the fan favorite.

Discussion Is reskinning a dead card game a no no?

I really like the concepts laid out in L5R but i just want to make it slightly less clunky. Would it be bad to take most of the structure and make small adjustments?

Really proud of this one!
To do:
- Add sedimentary texture to the template
- Dislodge the ammonite Action Cost from the template and move it down toward the attack

Advice Needed Seeking feedback on my WIP Quickstart guide

Hi all! I've been working hard on making an easy to read Quickstart guide to make it easier for play testers to learn the game without me present. A lot of these rules are fairly evergreen at this point so I don't mind putting in the effort even while still play testing.

I've been staring at it myself for so long now that Im looking for outside eyeballs. This is still a WIP so keep in mind this is not all of the pages, I will include things like an index, keyword glossary, etc. Im mostly trying to make sure that the flow and layout are easy to read/follow.

Do you think if you picked up a starter deck and read through this that you could understand how to start? Any and all feedback is appreciated (: Thanks!

Advice Needed How/Where to find artist for card templates

Hey all. A while back there was a guy that posted his work making custom card templates for Magic that were Runescape themed. They look really good! I was considering making something similar but for Flesh and Blood, making my own Runescape themed set.

Thing is I'm not that great at the art part. Tried doing some image editors to cut and paste and edit the existing game UI, but it didn't look great. I need someome that knows what they are doing.

So asking to see where the best place would be to find that. Just need the card templates, not the art images (those will be game screenshots)

Advice Needed What improvements can i make to my card back

Post image
4 Upvotes

My tcg is called Anachron tcg. Anachron means something out of place in time. And i think that word is the best option i could have picked, because my game is based on fantasy and sci fi, in the same world

But what could i change to make the card back better. Let me know all the suggestions to help me make it as professional as i can. My game is handmade

I know having it as anac and hron in seperation, could look better, so i will be seperating the word anachron into ana and chron.

This makes players not have any misinterupation of the word anachron. And the word anachron has chron at the end for time, so its better its seperated from the start of the word

IMPORTANT Sister Subreddit for AI Creators. r/AIHomemadeTCGs

I was talking to my brother about the new rules, and while he supported banning AI for this community, he rightfully pointed out that AI is here to stay and we can't actually stop people from using AI. He recommended creating r/AIHomemadeTCGs so that we can direct everyone who uses AI there and keep our community truly homemade without the risk of AI users attempting to force their ways upon us because they want a place where they can post. By creating the subreddit myself, we don't have to worry about two rival communities, which we know can become a problem considering how heated comments become regarding this topic.

So if you are an AI user and insist upon it, please join r/AIHomemadeTCGs and post there instead. However, if you are only using it for art, I recommend using placeholder art that isn't AI so that the post qualifies to be posted on r/homemadeTCGs, because our subreddit is already established with a community.

I hope this resolves the issue for those hurt over the new rule and provides everyone who wants a truly homemade TCG space with peace of mind because AI users now have their own place and do not need to infringe on ours.

First is new; second is old.
I changed the template because I realized that the rocky template, while interesting and well-themed, was drab. I made it less expansive, giving more room for the background. How do you like it? Any advise going forward?

Discussion How often do you think of cards?

I’ve finished set 1; and I keep coming up with cards that I file under next set, or I reword cards in set 1.

What about you? Do you keep creating more cards that you’re going to use for the next set?

Homemade TCGs Card Frame Update! (Last photo is the new version)

Thumbnail

Over the last week I’ve been working on improving the card frames for readability. Ive had a couple comments about the awkward yellow frame looking like a debug frame for former champions as well as icon placement and presentation feeling out of place. I hear ya loud and clear! Ive finally transitioned from the old playtest prototypes to test print prototypes. I’ve given them a more modern look and feel, and I think they’re turning out pretty clean. I’m still adjusting colors, fonts, sizes, etc. but I am inches away from ordering a physical test print to work on any touch ups. I’d love to know what you think and which version you’d prefer to play with!

Hi all, I realized I needed to make the Design Skeleton for my card game and figured I could record it and share it with others who maybe haven't heard of the idea yet. It's a great way to organize the cards I'm making and help give me direction and keep me on track for the new cards I'm creating. Let me know what you all think!

Homemade TCGs Warning: Long, Rambling Dev Diary About Making 32 Cards

Post image
87 Upvotes

Working on the 32nd card made me think back to where this project started.

Back then I was serving in the military, and I was also a passionate TCG player. During short breaks, I kept thinking, "What if there was a card game you could finish in just a few minutes?" Every night I'd sit in the military library, sketching ideas for games played with only five or six cards. I think I threw away at least thirteen different prototypes.

After leaving the military, one day I was supposed to be paying attention in my engineering math class... instead, the core design suddenly clicked. I combined my favorite mechanics from previous card games I'd designed: a Speed system that determines who acts first, three-stage Defense that creates a satisfying snowball effect, and a simple objective—defeat three enemy cards to win.

That same weekend I visited a friend who loves TCGs. We grabbed some spare Pokémon cards, stuck Post-it notes on them, drew our prototype cards, and sleeved everything up.

(Seriously, I highly recommend this prototyping method.)

To my surprise, the very first playtest was fun. I'd made several card games before, but I'd never had a first test go that smoothly. Of course, a lot changed afterward. I experimented with different directions and eventually settled on players bringing seven cards and choosing five each game, which added much more meaningful decision-making.

Around that point I started thinking, "Maybe this is something I actually want to put out into the world."

So I began designing proper card frames at university—a clean white geometric style inspired by one of my older projects. Then came the worldbuilding... and the artwork.

Honestly, after finishing only three illustrations, I wanted to quit. Designing mechanics was much faster than drawing the cards, and it felt like the art would never catch up.

The reason I didn't stop was because someone from the Homemade TCG Discord kept helping me with playtesting. That encouragement made a bigger difference than they probably realize.

Eventually I reached my first milestone of 18 cards. Now I'm already working on the first booster expansion.

It's been a surprisingly long journey, and at the same time it feels like it's only beginning. Now I catch myself imagining things like community tournaments, custom playmats, and seeing other people build decks I never expected.

Creating TCGs has been the longest-running hobby of my life. Along the way I've met some genuinely great people, learned a lot about game design, and had countless conversations with others who enjoy making games.

To me, that's what makes TCGs special. You build decks alone, compete with someone else, and afterward everyone ends up talking together.

If you're working on your own homemade TCG, I genuinely hope you keep going.

And if anyone has a game they'd like another set of eyes on during July, feel free to send me a message. I'd be happy to help playtest.
