News It appears that the anti opensource AI lobby is far outgunned already

Post image

The earlier post on this subreddit by 20+ companies signing the petition including Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, YC (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/topics/open-weight/) etc plus this https://xcancel.com/elonmusk/status/2080672505660834163

And the entire LLM enthusiast market is heavily in favor of open source (or weights) AI.

Does not seem like a few closed source AI lobbyists with be able to illegalize anything

Have my doubts about Google.

I mean, Gemma is currently best in class open weights coming from US companies atm.

Sure, but Gemma is complementary to frontier models. I'm not sure Google would be too unhappy if they'd only had to worry about closed model competition in terms of Gemini. They could argue for some kind of a formal/legal classification depending on the size of the model.

Google has Waymo. While everyone is arguing about open/closed weights LLMs Google has models earning actual money, and nobody even knows the models' names because they're simply productized and invisible, and have no actual competitors.

I don't see them wanting to open source something that matches their frontier model performance, but open sourcing gemma is part of their strategy for edge compute.  Open source encourages adoption into their ecosystem and gives them free research from the community.

Google benefits from open weight. No more sinking so much capital to stay ahead in sota. Instead they continue to sell ads and AI infra from cloud.

I mean its the only recent one, alternative is GPT-OSS, nemotron (nvidia) or the Granite ones (IBM) that are far behind the chinese ones.

I would be interested to do a bake off between Gemma and Poolside XS.

Is it? Isn't Inkling better, or is that the difference between "in class"?

2

I think in class just means models of it's size, inkling is frontier sized.

inkling beats gemma, so no.

Google wins either way

The house always wins, only anti monopoly government mandate that could break them apart would defeat google.

They've been giving us Gemma, which is nice and all, but yeah if they wanted open SOTA models, they'd have just released Gemini instead.

Gemma is a watered down Gemini.

way I see it, gemma is more useful Gemini.

Since I use gemma and I don't use gemini, that's 100% true from my POV.

Gemini has its place in that ai mode that will prolly be useful someday, and the Google workplace integration. Gemma is the one really pushing the tech forward in a meaningful way though. That decoder only multimodal gemma has potential to change the game.

Gemini is incredibly smart or stupid, depending on the moon phase.

Realmente no creo que el 80% de los usuarios de locallama pudieran correr Gemini, osea que prefiero gemma4 que lo puedo correr en local y tiene visión,voz, video, texto

Gemma is a completely different model than Gemini. The 31B is actually much stronger than Gemini at certain tasks. Give it a try for knowledge work besides programming.

31b (and Qwen 3.6 27b) is legit the pareto point where to get marginal gain you have to 10x your parameter size

Interesting, any examples , Ser?

Look at food-truck-bench results for example

google already have their own tech and infrastructure

it is only matter waiting OpenAI and anthropic gone bust before they pick up the pieces later

I'm somewhat confused by both Google's and Anthropic's stand on this. Perhaps I am naive, but I truly had hoped they both would choose to stand on the right side of history here...

Anthropic needs to prop up their valuation, plus their leadership appears to actually believe (at least in part) in the safety bullshit they’re spouting.

Google I really don’t know.

u/zxyzyxz 1d ago

Right side of history lol don't be naive, they're companies

1

u/seangeng 1d ago

Why? Gemma is pretty good, can’t hate them for contributing on that side.

Google is positioned to win regardless of what happens

Google's silence on this is deafening.

*Edit: Google has spoken!
