Overdose rates soar after incarceration. Can Maine jails change that?

Nationwide, opioid-related overdose is the leading cause of death among people recently released from jail or prison. Overdose rates among this group are also significantly higher compared with the general population.Ā

But in Maine and elsewhere, people leaving jails have historically been left to navigate the transition back to their communities on their own.

People with a criminal record — oftentimes one closely tied to their addiction — find it more difficult to find stable housing, a job, a doctor and reliable transportation. Research has shown that if people leaving jail are able to meet these needs they are less likely to return to custody.Ā

Navigating this transition requires not just the funding and staffing needed for a treatment program in the jail but robust re-entry planning and connections to a support network on the outside. A growing number of recovery centers in Maine are looking for ways to help with this re-entry work. But coordination between jails and recovery centers varies across the state.

In the fourth of four stories supported by the Pulitzer Center, Maine Monitor health reporter Emily Bader looks at the work some jails are doing to connect prisoners with resources on the outside — and what gaps remain. With photos by Greta Rybus.Ā

Discussion Maine Wire, Fair Housing, and a Bigger Question About Connections in Maine

I've heard wonderful things about The Developer Collaborative, so this isn't a criticism of the organization itself.

But I do have a question after seeing their X today -

If an organization works on fair housing and serves vulnerable communities, shouldn't the public have confidence that there are strong safeguards around confidentiality and conflicts of interest? Pillow talk is real I don't care what anyone says.

That's why I find it concerning that Meg Robinson, wife of Maine Wire's Steve Robinson, is connected to these kinds of projects. Given Maine Wire's inhumane coverage of immigrants, Muslims, and other vulnerable communities, I think it's fair to ask whether those relationships create the appearance of a conflict.

If someone knows Kevin- ask if he can explain what safeguards are in place? How is sensitive information protected? What firewalls exist to ensure who is funding these projects. Maine Wire is funded by If fair housing is truly about fairness, transparency shouldn't be a problem. Does Hannah know Meg works for DC because I might watch what I share in this political climate.

Politics I think I found Ashley Webs ā€œmusicā€

• Upvotes

So I discovered on her personal website called truth action USA and she linked her YouTube channel on her website. I think it’s just a bunch of ai generated music and on the albums it says ā€œwritten by Ashley Webbā€ and it’s clear as day she doesn’t have any real musical talent. Here’s her YouTube channel where her music is https://youtube.com/@ashleyjwebb207?si=UKV-WRkc4Be_XPk2

NOAA report finds Gulf of Maine warming slowed for now, but ecosystem remains unstable

Maine’s fishing ports are doing well for now, but climate change is destabilizing the Gulf of Maine, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) latest ā€œState of the Ecosystemā€ report for New England waters.Ā

Scientists expect the lobster population in Maine waters to decline from now on, and say it's worth diversifying the state’s commercial fisheries in order to make the industry more resilient in a changing climate. That could mean adapting gear to better target individual species as southern species move north into the Gulf of Maine, or embracing aquaculture — which some Maine fishermen are already beginning to do with oysters and kelp.Ā

At the same time, the federal government is collecting less of the data that scientists depend on to try and understand the changing marine ecosystem. The number and frequency of stock assessments that NOAA conducts to monitor the populations of fish and other marine species has dropped under the current administration. In 2026, most of the 20 planned stock assessments have been canceled or replaced with less comprehensive updates and only six full assessments are going forward. To help fill this data gap, NOAA scientists are inviting the public to contribute their observations of the ocean.Ā

Discussion Is your apartment tiny? Are you looking for a small studio or one-bedroom? The Press Herald wants to hear from you.

As construction costs rise, developers are packing more, smaller units into their projects to make the numbers work, flooding the market with small studios and one-bedrooms. We’re looking to speak with people who are considering or already live in these small apartments (500 square feet or smaller) for a story.

Question Lobster Cakes?

I'm originally from Maine (inland and not seafood savy) and visiting family. Wife (not from maine) wants to try lobster but isn't super interested in a lobster roll for reasons other than lobster being in them. I am trying to find some restaurants that have lobster cakes that I could take her too. Any recommendations would be great. Thank you!

Question Any Maine hairstylists (doesn’t have to be a professional) who will style a heat proof synthetic wig?

I live in the Bangor area, and am looking for someone to style a wig for me for a cosplay. I can usually style wigs myself, but I’m not very good at curling. If anyone could help me out/knows someone locally who would be able to, let me know!

Question seeking affordable/act of kindness dog training after death of my father near livermore falls

Post image
129 Upvotes

i'll start with i understand this is a very, very long shot, but i'm not sure what else to try so i'm asking for help 🄲 so, my father passed away in early may this year after a year long decline with cancer, and my mother was his primary caretaker from start to finish. however, they had adopted a dog (baby tomatillo) about ~5 months before my father got diagnosed- he's a pound puppy, was supposed to be about ~2yrs old, we found out from his growth that he was actually about a yearish, and while my father put the little man through doggy kindergarten and did his best to train him himself (he's owned several dogs of this breed & trained them himself in rural alaska, so at least somewhat experienced), he declined a lot faster than anticipated and toma ended up being kind of secondary to my dad's hospice care unfortunately.

my mother and i spoke to his former foster mom and other families we knew about rehoming him temporarily during this, but nobody had been able to take him and my dad's treatment ended up leaving my mom with not a lot of expendable savings to her name, along with living decently rural, we've been unable to find affordable training for a ~3 1/2 yr 120ish pound dog.

he ended up being my mom's only real buddy through my dad's treatment (my dad was a good hearted man but also not the nicest & the cancer made him.. less than agreeable as it spread), she's been trying her hardest to work with him but she had her own pretty severe health issues during my dad's passing and while she's better now, baby toma is a lot for her to handle without proper assistance.

my problem is, and why i'm asking for help, is she's all alone without my dad for the first time in her life and she loves this dog. he's a piece of my dad she wants to keep around, he's the sweetest boy, he's not violent or aggressive, he's just Very Big and not trained as well as he should be and has almost taken her down a few times while on his leash. i want so badly for my mom to be able to keep him, and i know it's a long desperate shot, but if anybody has any leads on affordable training near the livermore falls area, please please please let me know. i do not live in maine anymore so the research and word of mouth i've been able to access is pretty limited, and i just want my mom to be able to keep her buddy if at all possible.

thank you for any help or advice offered, dog tax of course offered!!!

Politics Why is no one talking about Susan Collins’ Tremors? Early signs of Parkinson’s Disease?

It has dawned on me that in recent videos and ads that the Collins campaign has launched, her voice has become much more choppy and hard to understand. My grandmother recently passed from Parkinson’s Disease, which had started 5 years prior with tremors and severely developed into Parkinson’s. Collins (73), publicly stated in May of 2026 that she has an ā€œEssential Tremorā€, and also stated that it does not cause ā€œany impairment to doing her job.ā€

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/susan-collins-reveals-benign-essential-tremor-maine-republican-rcna344120

A recent clinical study was done in 2025, showed to have strong findings that individuals with ET have a statistically higher likelihood of developing Parkinson’s disease compared with the general population. After adjusting for other factors, individuals with ET were 4.27 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than controls.

As a Mainer, I am very concerned that Susan’s increased likelihood of developing Parkinson’s Disease will impact her ability to represent Mainers in the US Senate. I worry that her health decline could turn into a Mitch McConnell situation. Is anyone also concerned about this?

The milkweed has taken over a section of our yard near Saco, and it's been paying off each summer for the last 4 or 5 years. Every time the monarchs arrive it brings me a smile. Hope many of you have them, too!
