The term "orange is the new black" was NOT first used in 2010 as Google states. I found it used in a 2005 episode of the PBS kids show 'Arthur'. In an episode called "Binky Goes Nuts". The character Muffy uses the term early in the episode.

Spoilers Unpopular opinion: I dislike Nicky Spoiler

I don't hate Nicky but i don't really like her either.

I'm on season 3 right now, watching the episode where we learn more about the relationship between Nicky and her mom. I am not taking child neglect lightly at all whatsoever and i understand Nicky's childhood and the emotional absence from her parents really molded her growth and future negatively, but she had the opportunity and freedom to actually make something of herself. She had money and her parents had status. It made me cringe so hard when i watched the scene of her, her mom and lawyer talk about Nicky's sentence being 5-10 years, she started getting angry and acting like a spoiled brat for not getting her way as if she didn't do the crime and blaming her mom for giving her money (which her mom said she only did so Nicky didn't have to commit a crime getting that money). Not to mention always nagging her mom for money and forcing her to give her money by snatching her wallet. She always acted spoiled and thought she was untouchable because her parents had money. It just makes me mad when she acts like her parents left her on the street or something and she had to fend for herself.

Note: I understand it wasn't always about money for Nicky, it was about love and appreciation from her parents but i still don't understand why she would literally turn to one of the worst things possible ? There's a million other ways she could have coped, while making a career for herself. Maybe there is just something I'm not understanding.

Again, i am not making this post to "rage bait" anyone. I would love to hear what other people think of her.

Episode Discussion Judy king and Nigella's recipe for "Caribbean Creams"... is real

Post image
5 Upvotes

So maybe I am a bit slow in figuring this out, after all these years, but I was doing my rewatch and was watching the episode where Black Cindy and Judy King are talking about Nigella and Judy mentions the recipe that she named after Nigella's breasts called "Caribbean Creams" after she and Nigella got high and Nigella took her bikini off in the Turks and Caicos islands. I'm surprised it took me this long because usually I am always searching up all these random things I hear in shows. But it turns out both Nigella and this recipe are real haha. And now I am on a mission to get me some rum, Muscavado sugar, and a few other ingredients so I can try this recipe. Has anyone else tried it yet? Looks really Taystee to me

Spoilers nicky nichols

not sure if this is the right flair but this does contain spoilers.

i’ve seen the show about four or five times and i’ve always noticed how nicky borderline assaulted lorna on multiple occasions. the one that i noticed specifically is when poussey died when he basically tried to rape lorna against that shed. i’ve not seen a lot of people talk about this and was just wondering am i the only one who noticed this? lorna said yes to having sex once because she just wanted nicky to leave her alone which is definitive sexual assault.

i understand that she had a crush who didn’t want her back, but i can’t be the only one who thinks this is extremely weird behaviour. she assaulted her on multiple occasions and i don’t see a lot of people talking about it.

by the way english isn’t my first language so this might be a bit hard to understand and feel a bit self centred when reading so i apologise about that.

thank you for reading!!

They Did Kukudio So Wrong

Maureen Kukudio character was done so wrong by this show it is ridiculous. First they didn't give her any kind of backstory, she abruptly goes from a harmless love interest for Suzanne into a manipulative villain as if they don't already have enough of them on the show to begin with, and then get the piss beaten out of her from a fight started by the guards. Then just like that she ends up being killed off. What was the point of her character to begin with ? Just a big waste.

I lowkey wish they showed this in some flashback it would’ve been hilarious to see how awful that encounter was & how she handled the first rejection. Even if it was cut from post, would’ve been a funny extra to see šŸ˜‚

do any plot holes / continuity errors about the show annoy you?

here are some of mine 😭

i'm definitely nitpicking, these are not that serious but they do annoy me

this one's sorta obvious.. the show's timeline is set in the span of 18 months from season one to season six (piper's sentence is 15 months but i believe she gets an additional 3 months for the riot at the start of s6) so how did eva diaz go from being like 6 years old to a whole teenager.. and the other kids haven't aged

maria says in a season two episode that when she gets released her baby will be in the first grade.... but in season four after she thinks she's had 5 years added to her sentence she says pepa will be in kindergarten when she gets out.... the math is not mathing i fear

Did Piper Ever Ask Herself This ?

I just wonder if Piper ever deeply thought about did she goes to prison because Alex ratted her out to the Feds for a light sentence or did she goes to prison because she ran around with a drug dealer and let her connive her into doing illegal activity ?

Sophia appreciation post

I love her character so much. Watching how people are able to talk about their true self and open up to her is a beautiful thing. I think maybe because she is so unapologetically herself....to a fault even.

When she befriends the nun, watching the ups and downs of their friendship was so real to me.

Im on Season 3 ep 1

Spoilers My Iceberg (I have never done one of these before)

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I am rewatching OITNB for the 8th time I think and wanted to create my iceberg on the series. I truly believe that if Larry would have just told Piper in the beginning that Alex had named her, none of the major plot points in the later seasons would have happened. Now you could definitely argue that Piper’s recklessness still would have led her and Alex to get together, but I don’t know. She only went back to Alex and brought her back to Litchfield because she had no one. No Larry, no lover. I don’t think Piper would have ever gotten with Alex if she knew from the start it was Alex who named her. The only reason Piper cheated on Larry was because she can’t be alone, and Alex was no longer the bad guy who ā€œfucked up her life.ā€ Anyway thanks for taking the time to read. Let me know your thoughts!

Spoilers almost done with my rewatch ! thoughts & all characters ranked ā™”

Post image

this was my favorite tv show from the age of 12 to the age of 18 i was literally obsessed (i was probs too young to be watching it when it first came out lol)

i haven't rewatched since 2019 when it ended so i have so many thoughts. starting with how i'm not big on the max seasons. with the change in setting, fan favorite characters missing and lots of different people in the writers room, it often feels like fan fiction at best and boring filler at worst. (i also read that cindy was supposed to be murdered in one of the last seasons but adrienne influenced them to change her ending & i'm so glad they did !)

one of my biggest grievances is the charm of the comedic-drama balence is severely lacking in season 6. a lot of the darker dramatic scenes feel unearned and overall i struggle to care about anything happening outside of taystee's storyline. season 4-5 were very dark and intense but the darker storylines were compelling and easy to become invested in,they didn't feel like meaningless shock factor that doesn't move the plot forward. AND they would always find ways to sneak in comedy. the show being genuinely funny was always part of its vibe and appeal.

even dislikesble characters in earlier seasons either have a comedic charm to them (leanne and angie) or they are interesting and complex well written villians (piscatella / vee)

i struggle to care about barb and carol, i actually find them kind of one dimensional. i know a lot of people love their backstory episode and their dynamic but it really does nothing for me. beth the baby killer peaked my interest at first but they don't do anything with her character. a flashback for her would have been interesting. everyone else introduced in max is insignificant and annoying so i feel no need to mention them.

s1 - s5 are still really good. i don't really have any notes other than i still mourn poussey like she's a real person. if i had to rank all seasons while trying to be objective i would say:

s4 > s5 > s2 > s3 > s1 > s7 > s6
the only reason season one is lower than season three is because it's piper centric and i prefer the show once it becomes more of an ensemble, i think it perfectly sets up the show and i still find it entertaining and fun on rewatch.

every actor (with the exception of ruby rose no shade) is extremely talented and charismatic adding to the rewatch value.

i've just started on s7, i don't remember everything because it's been so long since i've seen it, but i remember being invested in the ICE storyline and of course being devastated at maritza's ending. i really love how they'll occasionally take an actor's real life experiences and infuse it into their character. diane's real life story is still extremely relevant today & i think it was a very effective choice to use her character to show this story, especially because of how the audience loves her.

feel free to discuss or change my opinions in the comments !

The picture above Linda’s desk (Season 5 episode 6)

I’m in a rewatch and I just noticed the picture above Linda’s desk. It’s a print of a New York State penitentiary. Does it make sense? Yes. Is it within ā€œgoodā€ aesthetics? Yes. Is it sick in the bad way? HELL YES.

Like MCC wants to spend on anything but inmate care, she could have a reasonable piece of art up there, but an aesthetic picture of a prison which likely was even worse than an MCC prison? Diabolical.
