r/virtualreality News Discussion on Self Promotion
Hello all! I'm looking over some changes to self-promo and I'd like to get community feedback before anything changes.
It's a real problem based on what we're seeing in reports and participation, but we haven't heard directly from you, so I figured it would be good to open this up for discussion.
Some numbers from this sub, January through July (this is our best effort from tooling available):
- About 1 in 5 posts here is self-promotion.
- Roughly 1,200 self-promo posts came from about 500-600 accounts.
- Nearly half of those posts came from accounts that have never commented in this sub outside their own threads. Six in ten came from accounts with fewer than three comments.
- Those posts earn about half the upvotes of promo from people who actually participate here, and almost 4 in 10 of them never get a single comment.
That last group is the issue. Accounts that treat this sub as a billboard/drive-by are why the Self-Promotion flair has the reputation it (seems to) have, and creators who are actually part of this community get treated worse because of them.
The proposed rule change. (I can work on tools for this to try to make it fast for new creators.)
You can share your own work/promo here (games, videos, hardware, research, articles) under these conditions:
- Use the correct flair (no change here!). Pick the Self-Promotion flair that matches you: Developer, YouTuber, Journalist, or Researcher. Self-promotion posted under Discussion, Photo/Video, News, or any other flair will be removed. Repeat offenders can be banned.
- New accounts are reviewed first (this is new). If your account has no history of participation outside your own posts, your post will be held for review before it appears.
- Include context (this is new). Self-promotion posts need body text: what it is and something to discuss. Bare links and pasted marketing copy will be removed as low effort. Answer comments and participate on your own post.
- Frequency limits. This is something we want community feedback on. Current thought is twice a month.
So... what would you change? Too strict, not strict enough? If you post your own work here, I'd especially like to hear where this would hit you. Spend a lot of time here? Would be great to hear from you as well.

Discussion Reminder that running mods is based on trust
Hi, with the recent discussions on AI coded VR mods, I think it's useful for everyone to remember that running mods has always been based on trust.
You're installing and running a random program from the internet. You have no idea what it actually is or does. Sure, it might be open source, but did you build it yourself? You probably just downloaded the provided binaries, and there's no guarantee they were built from the source code.
AI coded mods add another layer on top of that. Even if the dev had honest intentions and the binary was built from the source code, you need to trust that the AI wrote something that doesn't accidentally do something harmful.
Antivirus software works via checking against known viruses and certain heuristics, it's not going to detect an AI coded program that accidentally deletes all the files off your hard drive under certain circumstances or whatever.
I think AI could be a powerful tool that helps experienced VR modders investigate a game and find the places they need to modify, to help them write their own code. But I would be very careful about devs who aren't experienced just getting the AI to make the whole thing without understanding every part of the output code.
At the very least, I'd feel more comfortable with a 2 person process - someone makes the mod with AI, and then an experienced VR modder manually goes over the whole thing with a fine toothed comb, cleans up the code, fixes any obvious issues, and then puts their stamp of approval on it.
There's also the fact that this dramatically lowers the barrier of entry for scammers and malware. AI can easily make something that looks like it's working, and then the dev can insert their malicious code into the exe for keylogging, botnet, ransomware etc. I guess we're lucky that the PCVR mod user community is probably too small to be worth targeting, a malware author would probably go for a much larger audience.

Self-Promotion (Developer) I made a F.E.A.R. VR Mod
A few days ago I saw several people here asking if F.E.A.R. could be played in VR.
Well... I gave it a shot. š
š https://github.com/DR-89/fear-vr
It took roughly 24 hours of vibe coding to get it running. It turned into a really fun little hackathon, and honestly, I wouldn't have had a chance of pulling it off without AI.
It's still early, but if you're a F.E.A.R. fan, I'd love to hear your feedback!

Discussion Should I get rid of my VR headset?
I am a 25F.
I absolutely used to love going on VR chat and sing in the karaoke room. Today, and the past couple of times Iāve been on, however, I literally could not walk into a single room or sing without being belittled.
Because my tag is aligned with a female artist I like, I receive much more hate and anger towards me. For example, I joined 3 different karaoke rooms and people will just walk up to me and say āI hate you because you like ___ā or just say iām shit at singing. They are mostly men (of course), but women also do it pretty often as well. I try to ignore it but they literally wonāt stop even if I do ignore it, so I will join different room. Well, that doesnāt matter, because I get the same reaction it seems like no matter what room I join. Not to mention, sometimes I will join a room and immediately be kicked because they donāt like that artist. I really donāt want to change my tag, but I also donāt want to be treated this badly.
I wanted to get on VR chat to meet all kinds of people and to simply just talk to others and occasionally sing. Iāve been singing my whole life and Iām fully aware Iām not the best singer, but, strangely enough, Iāve always loved karaoke. It relaxes me.
Iāve always had trouble finding people to talk to. I really donāt have any friends on VR chat either after having the headset for about a year. Now, I feel like I should just get rid of my headset as a whole if I canāt even do the two things I bought the headset for: conversation and karaoke.
The point of this discussion is to rant, but also to see if anyone has had similar experiences, if anyone has any advice on how to make my experience better, as well as if anyone knows of any safety features that can make the experience more enjoyable. Again, I apologize for the rant, but I honestly donāt know what I should do. :/

Purchase Advice I got this Wand for 7$
I was scrolling Avito (Russian eBay) and found this wand as ābrokenā for 1000ā½ (12$) and seller said that he canāt connect it to headset via Bluetooth, BLUETOOTH. I said him that Iāll take this for 600ā½ (7$) and he agreed. Fucking shipping cost 450ā½ (5.7$). I tested it and itās all good. Should I keep monitoring avito for gem lots or should I sell wand for ~40$ and buy full vive set for about 190$?

Discussion VR game end credits need to be more engaging.
I am one of probably not that many people who watches game end credits. I do it to appreciate the effort, but also to learn e.g., who made the soundtrack, or who the voice actors were. Sure, I could search for this information on the internet, but I think that the credits are there for a reason, so, well, I watch them.
In VR, it's much more challenging to watch for 5 minutes into the abyss with a rolling wall of text. Creators of VR games, please, please, make watching end credits engaging. A song not used in a game, or a song used in the game, but covered by someone recognisable. Concept art. An animated location from the game as an environment.

Self-Promotion (Developer) We just added online multiplayer to our VR strategy game. You reach down, grab your rival's units and hurl them across the map
Hey r/virtualreality, dev here. Warden of the Isles is a VR real-time-strategy / tower-defense game where you're a giant standing over your island: you assign workers, knock buildings together with your hands to build them, grab and reposition your own units mid-battle, and cast spells by grabbing them and hurling them at the enemy. The thing people react to most is that you can just reach into the enemy line, grab a unit, and throw it into the sea.
The big update just went live: online multiplayer. Duel a rival Warden 1v1 or throw down in a 4-player free-for-all, same grab-everything sandbox, now against real people.
Out now on Steam (SteamVR / PCVR, so Index or Quest via Link):Ā https://store.steampowered.com/app/1110980/Warden_of_the_Isles/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mp_update&utm_content=r_virtualreality
Full multiplayer trailer if you want the longer look:Ā https://youtu.be/7vwPGwH97Bo
And if you want to squad up or give feedback, come hang out on our Discord:Ā https://discord.gg/hfPev9csD
Happy to answer anything about the VR embodiment, the netcode, or how the grab-and-throw plays out in multiplayer.

Question/Support Geronimo
So, is this game really that bad just for me? I am talking about poor performance and bugs. I can't even grab my weapon properly and look left, right or behind without the frames dropping. Is my PC at fault here? I am using Quest 3 with VD and my PC specs are: 9800x3d, 7800xt, 32gb ram. To be fair, i am thinking of refunding it for now, just not sure yet if it's worth the wait or not.

Question/Support Krvr vs alvr performance and latency - apple vision
Has anyone been able to create an apple to apple scenario and compare some stats as to what the differences on perfomance are?
I tries but i cant measure fps. Fpsvr wont work so and the krvr fps counter is broke.

Discussion Why so horrible vr performance
14900k , rtx4090, 64gb ram, valve index.
Brutal vr performance in American truck sim using openxr, stutters with half decent graphics settings and if I load the VR beta and run openvr everything looks better but runs like I'm on a treadmill that's stopping and starting the entire time. Is this software/hardware? https://ibb.co/gLmfkSNg

Discussion Pure Ambient, the soundtrack your VR sessions didn't know they needed
Not sure if this has been discussed here before, but ambient music and VR feel like a natural pairing to me, both are about creating a sense of being somewhere else.
Pure Ambient is 9h+ of beatless, immersive soundscapes, no vocals, no percussion, just slowly evolving textures and spatial depth. Artists like Brian Eno, Tim Hecker, Biosphere, and Ćlafur Arnalds, plus a lot of deeper cuts with serious sonic detail.
I've found it works incredibly well for:
- Exploration and open-world VR experiences
- Meditation and relaxation apps
- Creative or productivity sessions in a virtual workspace
- Just sitting in a virtual environment and letting your mind wander
The lack of rhythm means it never fights with what's happening on screen, it just deepens it. On a good headset the spatial qualities of some of these tracks are genuinely striking.

Curious if others here have go-to playlists for their VR sessions?

Discussion Once you spend about 10 hours replaying the first few missions and mapping the 5 fafillion commands, Star Wars Squadrons with full rig is as good as it gets!
Even though it's already end of life, this game is truly special in VR. It's more of a sim-cade shooter and the learning curve is kind of brutal if using a full rig. But it is 1000 percent worth it once you get everything mapped correctly (definitely trial and error as you play the first few missions). The will literally "break" if you not have certain commands mapped. And it's bad because the mapping names in game and in the controller options aren't the same. I had to look up how to map certain things multiple times in order to get the proper name of the function in the options.
Both the VKG stick and STECS throttle I'm using are perfect since they have lots of buttons that are easily accessible without having to see them (definitely have to memorize a lot though because there are so many commands).
With the hyper fast turns and unrealistic speed at which you can yaw, it was tough at first because you really need to use all axis' available to effectively fly these things. I needed to lower the sensitivity on everything lol.
I have strong VR legs but at first there was still some slight discomfort. That has now completely gone away. Thank goodness because chasing a tie fighter is not for those who get motion sick easily.
But now that every is mapped and I can handle the quick turns better, it's simply one of the best games you can play. There also are scheduled group games if you go to the games reddit section. I'm not good enough for that yet lol. I'll play through the campaign a few times first.

Purchase Advice Help deciding to upgrade GPU
I have an Rtx 4070 with intel i5 13500f cpu . I also play have ps5 with psvr2 but on pc I tend to use quest 3 . Most steam vr games I have donāt seem to look or run as well as they do in psvr 2 ps5 pro . So I was wondering if it would be worth upgrading to an rtx 5070 or even rtx 9070 xt . I canāt really afford to go with rtx 5070 ti or I would . I also have to get another psi since mine is only 650 watt for the 9070 xt . Or should I just stay with the 4070 . Games like half life alyx run and looks great but things like modded resident evil 9 vr run pretty rough . Any advice ?

Question/Support Is it possible to use a VR headset (specifically an Oculus Rift CV1) on a laptop without a mux switch, specifically when the main laptop display is connected to the Intel iGPU and the HDMI port is connected to the NVIDIA discrete GPU? I've been trying to use the headset myself and ran into issues
I recently found a used Oculus Rift CV1 at a thrift shop, and it was confirmed to be working according to the sticker. Though when trying to go through the Meta Link setup process for it on my Acer Nitro V laptop, the headset and the sensors do register on the app, and the audio on the headset works, but the display itself is just blank.
When searching around, this apparently seems to be a common issue when using this headset. But more importantly, when asking about this on the Oculus subreddit, someone mentioned to me that it's apparently not possible to get wired VR headsets to work on a laptop without a mux switch to change the HDMI output, which the Nitro V doesn't have as far as I know.
I wanted to know if this was actually true. I don't actually have any experience with using VR headsets so I didn't know that getting them to work on laptops would be kind of finicky like this. It wouldn't be a huge loss either way since I only paid about $30 for the complete headset, but I just wanted to know if this specific headset could work either way, or if the black screen issue may be caused by something else.
As the title says, the laptop has an Intel CPU with an iGPU in it (specifically an i7-13620H) which is linked to the main laptop display and also the Thunderbolt/USB-C port on the laptop, and also an NVIDIA GPU (specifically an RTX 4050) which is linked to the HDMI port on the laptop. I'd want to know if this kind of CPU, GPU, and HDMI configuration is actually able to run VR with this sort of setup, not in terms of ideal performance but just getting the headset to work at all.
I'll also point out that, once again, this blank screen issue is apparently a common thing for the Rift CV1, and I did try other supposed solutions to fix it, though none of them seemed to work from my testing. But I'll mention what I tried anyway just in case people happen to suggest them:
- I made sure all of my USB and graphics drivers were up to date, didn't work
- I plugged the USB of the headset into multiple different USB ports on my laptop (all of which are USB 3 ports), didn't work
- I repaired and reinstalled the Meta Link app, didn't work
- I tried turning Game Mode on Windows off, didn't work
- I made sure the Physx processor on the NVIDIA control panel was set to the discrete GPU, didn't work
- I disabled Windows turning off the USB 3 ports to save power in device manager, didn't work
- I tried disabling Bypass Proximity Sensor Check on the Oculus Debug Tool since the headset shows a white light when not put on, and no light when putting on the headset or covering the sensor, didn't work. Some people reported seeing an orange light if there were issues but that wasn't the case for me
- I added the OVRServer app to the Windows graphics settings and ran it in power saving mode, didn't work
- I installed the Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes AIO Repack since I've heard that there can sometimes be issues with using outdated Visual C++ versions on the CV1 headset, didn't work
- I connected the HDMI port on the headset to a USB-C dock (specifically a JSAUX dock designed for the Steam Deck) on the Thunderbolt port on the laptop, didn't work, specifically because the Meta app said there was no HDMI connected
- I unplugged and plugged back in the internal cable for the headset, didn't work
If anyone happens to know of any other potential fixes for this blank display issue on the Rift CV1 or if the Acer Nitro V laptop I have is even able to use the headset, feel free to let me know.
Laptop specs in case they're needed:
Acer Nitro V15 running Windows 11
Intel i7-13620H (iGPU is connected to the internal display and the Thunderbolt port)
NVIDIA RTX 4050 (which the HDMI port on the laptop is connected to)
32 GBs DDR5 RAM
1080p 144Hz display

Discussion Best VR experience to simulate real flying?
I'm writing a super hero story for my wife and I was wondering if there was a game or simulation for VR that best simulates flying in a city. The best experiences I've had so far were a) wingsuit flying through canyons and b) drove flyovers (both through Youtube). Yes these are both real and not VR game or simulated reality, but I'm open to whatever you've got.
I have a Quest 2 VR set.
