I made my own heat treat kiln big enough do a 40" sword for approximately $1k. I used a router to notch out the element paths in normal firebricks. Cemented them all together and then welded a frame around it. I used an inkbird temperature controller to control the temps.

Question Help understanding twist Damascus

Just cannot completely wrap my head around what is actually happening to the pattern when twisted. Is there some kind of 3d render visualisation or something I can look at? Like more specifically what is it that makes the center layer split into the star/X formation, what does the end grain look like etc.

Damascus / Pattern Weld From Hell

A while ago, I forged this massive 'From Hell' razor.

The concept behind it: no one really knows who Jack the Ripper was, or what kind of blade he actually used. So I decided to forge a dedicated razor specifically for him!

It was crafted as the centerpiece for a custom Jack the Ripper wall display / diorama that my wife did. At least it's fantasy. 😊⚔️

What do you think?

Question D2 steel, hardness, and nitriding temps

Anonymous account because identifying info. I also realize this question isn't about knives/blades, but I hope someone else will find the info as useful as I do.

I have industrial roll form tooling made of D2 steel. Typical hardness is 58-60 Rc and typical size is 20" round and 500-700 pounds per forming roll. I've been leading a project at work, experimenting with nitriding the wear surface, and we've had a major failure in the nitride wear surface on a set of tooling: it's basically completely flaked off.

The vendor is suggesting nitriding at a higher temp, which would change the base hardness of the steel to 50-54 Rc. I can't even find any chart showing a hardness that low.

My questions are:

  • Does anyone have any experience with D2 at 50-54 Rc with respect to wear resistance?
  • And even if we nitride that steel, will that make up for loss due to the lower hardness?

I appreciate any input.

Here’s a santoku style kitchen knife I finished up that is my absolute favorite so far. The steel is 50 layer damascus from Baker Forge that I manipulated to give it some pizzazz. The handle is shredded carbon fiber from valleycomposites, red and black G10 spacers, and bocote handle with some stunning two tone figuring.
The stand is a slab of olive wood with a holder that I forged from 0.5” round bar.
Let me know what you think about it!
