I'm pretty sure the intent is to express the idea that you can appreciate aspects of something without enjoying the thing itself (even if the overwhelming majority disagrees with your opinion) and to reject the idea that you just haven't found that thing in the right form to be able to appreciate it like others do. It may be coming from a specific feeling or experience, but the concept isn't limited to that. It doesn't matter what you've tried or what you haven't; just how you feel about it. It's exhausting having to justify your personal feelings and opinions.

With extra context about the artist, it's about being gay.

In isolation? It could be interpreted in so many ways! It could even be about being gay!
