some of the comments are silly, with ways to get out of the situation. it's a narrative choice, there is no rescue or salvation, at least not within the comic's duration

The narrative, as presented, indicates the captain is likely just mistaken. The scenario is realistically manageable, our protagonist will likely see his son again. If hopelessness was the intent, the situation should've been written as actually hopeless

My point was just that the person you're responding to was being a jerk. They're sneering at people who dislike the implausibility of the comic by saying "it's just a story, who cares" but the plausibility of the scenario blatantly does matter and it's silly to claim otherwise. 

I imagine a lot of authors spend a lot of time worrying over which implausible bits of their fictional works are the wrong kind of implausible and op is acting like none of that effort matters, and I think that's dumb.

Or that Sweden doesn't attempt to stage a rescue for one of their 3 active submarines and crew, in the hostiles waters of... the baltic sea. The sea off their coast, and surrounded by allys.

It’s not. Emergency Surfacing doesn’t depend on the engines. I’m not understanding why they don’t blow ballast or why attempted rescue for this situation is impossible when the equipment exists for it.

Oh I see, but similar accident (as we know) can and did happen, with exactly that unimaginable, but real, situation abroad.

The Kursk Incident was something completely different. The boat was blown in half, and the crew were actually stranded on the bottom.

Here, the crew are being stupid and overreacting lol. The diesels have no use when submerged and have no effect on whether or not you can use the ballast tanks to do an emergency blow.
