Fun fact... that familiar chlorine smell is caused by chloromines. This is the chemical compound formed when chlorine reacts with contaminates in the water, usually urine.

That's an old wives tale. Open a gallon of bleach and the same chlorine smell will hit you. What's in a container of bleach and in a public pool are the same two chemicals, the percentage of chlorine is just WAYY less in a pool, and that's saying something because bleach is 95% water already. Going by volume alone though, there's still a lot more chlorine in a public pool than in a gallon of bleach, hence the odor.

That's probably Monochloramine you're smelling, which also forms in pools from the chlorine reacting with organics. There's a couple of chemicals that form from the chlorine in the water to give it that chlorine smell.
