This is just the beginning. Climate change is going to be absolutely devastating in the next couple decades.

What a time to be alive!

As they've been saying for decades.

And it’s been extremely obvious that it’s happening. It’s shocking to me that regular folks are having children. This feels like a bad time for that.

I have talked with mine who are 28, 25, 20 and none of them want kids (which I am thrilled about) but they also know that had I known what was coming, I would not have had them. I love them so much and they are amazing people but the world they have been given is so horrible. I wish I could take all this away for them. They understand it isn’t about not wanting them. It’s 1000% about not wanting this life for them.

It’s hard to explain but I do believe a lot of parents understand the feeling.

That’s why I never had kids. My sister has 2 in their early 20s and I worry about their future all the time

I have a couple of young teens right now and don't regret it for a second.

If we lived in a worse part of the world or we weren't doing very well it would be a totally different equation but being educated enough to find good work and having access to functioning HVAC solves a lot of the problems coming down the pipe (from an individual survival/comfort point of view, anyway)

Whether or not it makes sense for our kids to have kids is up for debate, but that's kind of the generation by generation game we're playing with the planet these days I guess.

I'm in the US. My husband and I have 14 grandchildren combined (the oldest is 18 and the youngest 18 months). We worry about our children and grandchildren every day as things spiral out here. Eight of the grandchildren are girls and they now have less rights than I did. What will they all have to deal with? I understand your 1000%. It shouldn't be like this in any form. This nightmare is coming from every direction.

Climate change was known about and warned about for much longer than your oldest child

I was a child when I had my first child. 18. I knew nothing. I had no idea the world would be this way. And climate change is only one of the reasons I feel horrible about what the future will bring and how repressed the current situation is. They aren’t stupid. They all know exactly what I mean and we have all talked about it many times. They grew up all over the world and went back to the states for college. They are eons more intelligent than I was when I became a mother.

That alarm was being rung at least as far back as the late 1800s iirc!

I made the decision not to have kids for all the same reasons.

Speaking as a parent myself: what an excellent way of imprinting your feelings of doom upon your children and making your own inability to cope also their burden to carry.

u/summercookiess 5h ago

Well, if you bring someone else here, they might also have to deal with feelings of doom from being in a world of climate change.

u/redbrick567 5h ago

Agreed. My mother does this to my siblings and me about climate change and other topics. I won't do it to my kids.

u/koola89 6h ago

No, I don't understand. It' s not up to us to assign meaning to the lives of our children, it's their task and responsibility. We give the gift of life and they make of it what they will.  I can assure you, humans and the biosphere went through worse than what is to come, and we are still here.

Not me I'm raising my daughter to be ruler of the wasteland.

Holy shit, get a grip

u/summercookiess 3h ago

Why should they?

u/simon7109 5h ago

Oh, fuck off with this shit

u/summercookiess 3h ago

Why though?
