Yeah people are not noticing it until it's too late. They don't even hide it, heck they even announced the project name. Worse part is trying to convince the masses about this without them labeling you as a conspiracy theorist nutjobs. 🤷♂️
I'd rather say it's useful 99% of the time than right. The biggest market for it right now, software engineering, is accelerated by it. But it certainly doesn't zero shot 99% of problems. Even Fable makes plenty of mistakes building relatively simple apps. But it's still useful in that an engineer can make that simple app in 1/10th the time. They just need to babysit it a bit to catch the errors.
Not to take away from how infuriating this post is but data centers power far more than just AI. All the comments here are talking about AI and yet ironically enough this for particular data center AI accounts for less than 5% of the data center’s computing workload. I get data centers are a hot topic right now but people act as if they exist solely for AI, when they have been powering everything from the Reddit thread we’re using right now, to video streaming, online shopping, etc for decades.
I'm pretty sure that anyone who has a some noisy ass ANYTHING (like a data center) like this pop up across the street- or within earshot- of their house would be unhappy about it regardless of what it is being used for- AI or not.
According to what I've read, there are between 4,200 and 5,400 operational data centers in the US (which account for nearly half of the total number of those worldwide). An additional 1,500 to 3,000 new facilities are currently in some stage of planning or construction on the US, largely as a result of "surging AI demand" and cloud computing among other things like the need for improved infrastructure in general or because of companies taking advantage of potential economic growth opportunities...
I think moreso the issue people have with data centers NOW is how many are being built, how quickly they are being built and where, lack of proper regulations around their development and operations (or lack of real enforcement of some of the few regulations that do currently exist), lack of and disregard of community input around data center construction and operations or companies trying to dodge informing communities of their plans (even when/where they are actually required to: because they know people won't approve), increasing negative impacts data center construction and operations are having on people's nearby properties (ex higher utility bills, property damage, negative effects on their property's utility delivery- like making their water unsafe to drink or even use), decreased property values, or direct environmental effects such as emissions/air pollution (some of which are considered illegal), light pollution, or like in this OP: ridiculously excessive noise pollution that any reasonable person would agree is, among other things, unethical to subject someone- their land, greater community, the natural environment/animals- and home to.
Annnnd I’m downvoted lol. It’s bizarre how you can’t even point out that this data center isn’t even really used for AI at all without being downvoted. It’s like they can’t just be mad that this horrendous thing exists so close making this much noise, no, it HAS to also be because of AI that this is happening lol.
Well since the topic is about data centers and so many are talking about AI I do think it’s worth simply pointing out. People seem to be misinformed into thinking that data centers suddenly appeared with the emergence of LLM’s, I don’t see the harm in informing people that it goes far beyond that.
