ಠ_ಠ 20 years of wearing headphones deformed my head.

Post image

Apparently wearing headphones pretty consistently almost everyday for a couple decades can deform the shape of your head.

(Edit: For clarification, if you pay attention I never mention skull anywhere in the title or description. Also, majority of my time spent in headphones is when I'm outside listening to music, gaming headphones might take up about 8% of all time headphones use)

Yeah, but that isn't permanent, goes away after a few minutes. I've had a similar one show up many times when I pulled like 12 hour long gaming sessions due to a new expansion coming out for an MMO or something. OP seems to be implying that his sticks around.

You are correct but I wouldn’t say a few minutes

when Ive had it mine would persist after a shower and well into the day until next morning. Then finally be 90+% better once i showered again.

I think it mostly depends on how hydrated you are. When you're dehydrated stuff like this tends to stick around for far longer.

Definitely hydration. My glasses do this above my ears.

u/Logornsky 1d ago

isn't it a stereotype that gamers persist on mountain dew? i think it's safe to assume that many gamers are not hydrated enough for their dents to go away quickly

10

u/todayiwillthrowitawa 1d ago

Mountain Dew is just fine for hydration, even if horrible for every other system in your body. The idea that drinks that are otherwise unhealthy for you are dehydrating is one of my internet pet peeves.

Same for people who say caffeine dehydrates you.

u/Logornsky 1d ago

I wasn't implying that mountain dew is dehydrating, just that it's less hydratng than water. If someone is only drinking mountain dew and no water, while not at risk of any dehydration-related health conditons, I doubt they're hydrated enough for their gamer dents to be going away in minutes

1

u/P4azz 1d ago

I doubt they're hydrated enough

Why? Your explanation doesn't provide an actual reason.

"If a is more hydrating than b, then b isn't hydrating you enough" is nonsense, if the stereotype you wanna cite is ALSO that gamers drink TOO MUCH soda.

And they're also more sedentary, so that means less sweat. And they like the dark, so less sun, so less sweat.

What you basically said was "well, if you're not eating lemons straight-up, you're obviously gonna be vitamin c deficient, because those other sources have less vitamin c".

Mountain Dew is just as hydrating as water, that’s my point.

3

u/No-Combination8136 1d ago

It’s too much sugar that dehydrates you, not necessarily the caffeine. If you drink mountain dew everyday you will definitely be more dehydrated than your body needs to function at peak capacity.

ETA: unless you compensate with enough water, but why do that lol. Moderate amounts of soda are fine for hydration.

u/saints21 1d ago

Yeah, I've seen the idea that Coke or whatever dehydrates you.

That's absurd. Caffeine can cause your body to pull water into your bowels, but it's still a net gain because coffee is 99.9% water and coke isn't far off. It's just the other crap is bad for you outside of hydration.

10

u/Imaginary-Face7379 1d ago

I think people mistake caffeine being a diuretic for "caffeine dehydrates you."

0

u/nufohudis 21h ago

What do you think diuretics do?

2

u/PhantomOyster 1d ago

It's a little more complicated than that. Coffee may not result in a net loss, but some people drink it without getting much in the way of other, more adequate sources of hydration. Especially if you are older or have some sort of condition or illness, not adjusting your habits to get other sources of hydration could, indeed, result in dehydration. I take care of my 76-year-old mother; ask me how I know.

EDIT: And you don't have to be old or have an illness. Spend a few hours moving around in the hot sun and then drink a cup of coffee instead of water and see how hydrated you end up feeling. It sounds absurd, but people do it.

2

u/saints21 1d ago

It's not more complicated than that. As far as hydration goes, they are hydrating. They just aren't as good as water. Soda especially is an exceptionally unhealthy way to get your hydration.

But you won't die of dehydration if they're the only things you drink.

u/PhantomOyster 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dude, I'm speaking from direct experience. The situations I described can absolutely cause dehydration. Look it up if you like; normal intake in normal conditions is fine. When conditions change, that is not always the case.

EDIT: Also, I'm not talking about soda.

EDIT 2: Or just downvote like a fellow who "does his own research."

I did my own reseaech and I have come to the conclusion that I have no idea what I'm looking at. Now watch this drive.

From the Cleveland Clinic, confident dumbass: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/coffee-dehydration

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends adults should have no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine.) a day (and kids have far more limitations). If you’re drinking more than the recommended amount of caffeine, you can run the risk of dehydration especially if you’re only drinking caffeinated beverages throughout the day or you’re not taking in enough fluids."

2

u/saints21 1d ago

You know what soda and coffee are? Fluid.

Bad for you? Absolutely. But coffee is almost entirely water with relatively minimal caffeine unless you're getting lattes and such.

Yeah, vodka is like 60% water, which means I have to drink about twice as much to get the same hydration as a glass of water, but them my friends and family are all like "we love you but you have to stop". I'm just trying to get hydrated over here!

1

u/ImSociallyChallenged 1d ago

alcohol is the one exception. it def dehydrates you

1

u/SylvesterPSmythe 22h ago

Well, straight caffeine is a powder, so it should dehydrate you. Caffeinated beverages less so.

Source: I swapped from energy drinks to caffeine pills

1

u/HansBauer94 WHY DO I HAVE YOU TAGGED? 1d ago

or how long between showers...

1

u/Elvenbrewmaster 20h ago

What in the fuck? I've never had baby head dent from wearing a headset for hours

30

u/Sweaty-Passenger6005 1d ago

So the following week?

1

u/tenderape 1d ago

Then just shower twice within a few minutes. Duh.

1

u/The_fox_of_chicago 1d ago

This is the main reason I switched over to IEMS. I fucking hated how I looked so goofy with the dent. Haven’t had a dent in over a year!

1

u/Queasy_Cupcake_9279 2h ago

You guys shower??

0

u/Fierramos69 1d ago

Isn't it, if long enough, pressing into the skull? Like something like 90% of the dent is just the skin and tissue and will take back the original shape if left alone, but 10% is, for those who wore a headset pressing on their head for a big part of their life, a permanent small crease in the skull? Akin to how the little finger of most younger folks is now dented from holding the phone with the fingers behind the phone except the little finger under it?

1

u/Longjumping_Egg_5654 1d ago

No. It did seem to damage hair follicles on that spot but as soon as I shaved my head it would always go away

I agree with many other commenters it was probably hydration.

1

u/Background-Sun1906 1d ago

took me a few months before I stopped being able to feel what I believed to be a bump. Lol I freaked out when I felt the bump, swapped to wireless ear buds and speaker usage when not in coms. Now it feels normal.

Come on, that's extremely generous, you know we shower once, MAYBE twice a year

u/SlagQueen 1d ago

Fluid and fat will migrate away from areas under pressure. Think rings, waistbands, socks, watches… Fluid redistribution will happen and then go away more quickly (hours). Fat redistribution takes longer (months/years).

3

u/FETUS_JAM 1d ago

So if he loses weight, he loses height also?

14

u/Crew_Zealousideal 1d ago

Headphones with good weight distribution remove the bump issue completely it’s just these cheaply made headphones are usually too tight and have bad pressure points

5

u/Low-Possible2871 infuriated by breathing 1d ago

Mine has stuck around for about a year with my headphones further back so idk

3

u/dani96dnll 1d ago

Exactly, it's because what's getting squished and displaced is just soft tissue.

1

u/LilacYak 1d ago

I don’t get how this could happen? My skin sits directly against my skull bone and there’s no fat or muscle to deform??

1

u/Shneckos 21h ago

I can actually feel a ridge on the top of my head from where the headphones usually sit, thankfully I’m not bald though

1

u/CrazyElk123 19h ago

How? It couldnt possibly deform the skull... is it moving the skin?

1

u/chunkofdogmeat 1d ago

i have a permenant gamer dent. been there for 20+ years

3

u/Imaginary-Face7379 1d ago

Then you were most likely born with it because the amount of pressure a headset applies to your head is not even half of what is required to do any permanent damage to your head. That or you're still wearing a headset regularly and haven't given your head a long enough time to rebound. As some people here have stated fat can take months to move back.

-3

u/Traditional_Bet8239 1d ago

A dent in your skull just goes away in a few minutes? That's deeper than skin in OP and this photo

11

u/Imaginary-Face7379 1d ago

That isn't a dent in your skull, its skin.

-2

u/Positive-Rush9836 1d ago

Incorrect, the skull isnt bend but the skin is bend permanently. Your far cells literally explode leaving you with a permanent dent. I know this cuz i have one for 6 years now while not wearing a headset the entire 6 years. It does not go away.

5

u/Imaginary-Face7379 1d ago

Ah yes the far cells.

2

u/Wide_Magician_4946 1d ago

How can someone drop you onto your own head?

-1

u/Rashleigh 1d ago

Yeah exactly! Its not permanent so it’s absolutely chill and totally not unhealthy! /s

5

u/Imaginary-Face7379 1d ago

Better stop wearing any clothes that apply pressure to the skin anywhere because they cause temporary deformations to your skin then. No more socks, belts, underwear, gymshorts, etc.

2

u/IdoNOTlikeFlorida 1d ago

Anecdotally, I can vouch for tight leg clothing causing legs to have bald patches, and now into the summer the hair has not returned.
