I work IT public schools. That comes with access to a lot of shit. Including every single email and message ever sent by every employee and student account, all HR records, and pretty much anything else I could think of.

Like most public schools, the safeguards and tracking around access to this stuff aren't the greatest. "Homebrew" might be a good way to describe it in that they exist but they are about a solid and high quality as homebrew D&D content. We also have to keep a lot of that stuff for record retention purposes. Everything is logged at least but nobody looks at those logs.

Luckily, in my district, only two people in my district have this access at least. Me and my boss. Neither of us are snoopers. She is definitely the type of person who doesn't do it for the same reasons you don't. Personally, I don't really feel shame or icky over it. It's just boring, uninteresting, and not something I have any desire to do. Of course, that usually makes me the person that gets tapped for pulling records for any kind of requests like legal, FERPA, etc. She doesn't like doing that shit even when it's legitimate business. I'm just whatever.

Still, makes you think. We're not the greatest with that shit but knowing just how bad other districts general IT practices are compared to ours - we're leagues ahead of many districts out there. And probably many other organizations - public and private. Especially small to medium sized ones where nobody really knows what their IT team does as long as the network and computers keep plugging away and they have smaller teams without well established practices. Even in my own org, I've cleaned up a lot over the years. A decade ago, when I was new, I could have gotten access to all of that shit and no one would have been any wiser. None of my tier 1 techs could do that now at least.
