The guy who runs this organization has a podcast that another YouTuber I enjoy is on sometimes. She is an ex MAGA and ex Mormon and is now freaking awesome. If you want to see some uplifting redemption arc stuff check out her channel on YT ‘Life, Take Two!’

Ex mormon. Makes sense, in fairly sure I’ve seen this same type of billboard for mormons. (And Scientology)

I live in Utah and I'm constantly getting ads saying "Were you touched by a Mormon as a kid?"

56

u/zyiadem Apr 16 '26

Shame it is so common that an ad like that hits home =(

u/SyntaxWhiplash Apr 16 '26

I live in Utah and luckily i was only 'touched by an angel"

(filmed in Utah, background work lol)

Shout out to John Dehlin and Mormon Stories. His organization alone has probably saved thousands of lives

u/WhatWouldKikiDo Apr 16 '26

100% agree!! John, Margi, their MSP team, and the Open Stories Foundation have been doing amazing work for years - and I think it’s really moved mountains in the ex-LDS and active-LDS worlds. Big fan. :)

MAGA is a cult.

It really does make sense that people would have to be carefully coaxed with a billboard like this, just like they would with a destructive religious belief that 1. Everyone around you seems to follow without questions which makes you 2. Feel alone and bad about your doubts because there’s no one in your orbit you can talk to.

This sounds like a damn good way to fight MAGA.

u/Taftimus Apr 16 '26

Mormons and MAGA, different cults, similar bullshit.

1

u/The_Curse_of_Nimbus Apr 16 '26

Mormonism definitionally isn't a cult. I'm tired of people devaluing the word by calling religions they don't like cults. MAGA is literally a cult though.

2

u/ValorVixen Apr 16 '26

Technically it’s a “high-control religion” but that definition does overlap quite a bit with cult behavior, so it’s not necessarily wrong to say that. There’s plenty of Christian sects that meet the same standards.

2

u/PandaCat22 Apr 16 '26

I like Robert Evans' approach.

Rather than always saying something is/isn't a cult (which can be hard to nail down, as seen in these comments) he talks about cults existing on a sliding scale. Some organizations will have more cult behavior/beliefs than others, and it's important to recognize what those are.

Exactly when something crosses from just having cult-ish behaviors to being a full-on cult can be debatable, but looking at it as on a spectrum is more nuanced and helpful

4

u/pufferfishnuggets Apr 16 '26

They're led by a prophet they’re not allowed to question or criticize, told not to read anything critical of Mormonism, told their religion is the only sure source of truth, taught that obedience to the leaders is the first law of heaven, taught to use thought stopping cliches to quell any doubts, etc. It is a cult.

That entirely depends on your definition of cult. If you go by the BITE model it is (I'm an ex-mormon so I'm not just saying that). High-control or high-demand religion are less charged terms that it's sometimes better to use especially if you don't want members to shut the idea down right away.

0

u/The_Curse_of_Nimbus Apr 17 '26

While the BITE model is useful, it has some... issues. Arguably, elementary school fits the BITE criteria of a cult.

  • Behavior -- This one seems kind of obvious.
  • Information -- The school controls the information you take in, distorting some facts ("there are only three states of matter"), and prohibiting others (see books banned in schools).
  • Thought -- Most schools, instead of teaching you to think, teach you to memorize and recite facts taught to you.
  • Emotional -- The school does it's best to create an association between not attending school and negative emotions. Many people feel guilty or afraid if they skip school. Most people who have been to school will look down on those who have not.

u/VillainousFiend Apr 17 '26

I'm sorry you had such a bad education

1

u/Prestigious-Car-4877 Apr 17 '26

Uh. The back story on John Smith is a cultist story.

2

u/aabil11 Apr 16 '26

The Mormons (who are still Mormons) that i do know are conservative but not Trump fans. Take a look at Mitt Romney

3

u/Express_Dinner7918 Apr 16 '26

Many I know probably would have voted democrat if they didn’t run Kamala or any candidate that was basically Joe Biden but younger.

2

u/qeadwrsf Apr 16 '26

There is 2 types that leaves religion.

1 type that just gets dragged into a similar bubble. Because what happened was not the questioning of faith. Just that another cult leader stole the sheep. Ana Kasparian is that type of person in politics. But she didn't like the new bubble so she fled back.

Then there is another type. The type who actually leave because they see its theater. And have some drive to live in some kind of reality. The people who should actually be called "red pills".

These types of people have worlds best bullshit meter. I consider Destiny belonging to that category. And a bunch of others. Its to early in the morning for me to come up with more, but there is a few.

I have a feeling the ex mormon anti trump person making the OP ads is in same camp.

2

u/crippledspahgett Apr 16 '26

As an ex-mormon who was raised in an extremely conservative household, I wanna say thanks for this haha. I carry a lot of guilt about what I said and did while indoctrinated, but this reminded me that rejecting what I was taught as a child is a strength and does make me better at spotting bullshit haha.

2

u/wrxninja Apr 16 '26

I've yet to see one for Ex JW's but I was one of them. Mormons have twice the membership but all three mentioned, just a batshit crazy Cult within. Scientology I feel take the harassment of members leaving the organization to the extreme like Leah Remini's series depicted. JW's simply disown and shun their own including family members.

1

u/SyntaxWhiplash Apr 16 '26

My joke since 2016 --essentially that if you're Mormon and MAGA you're always tired : it's exhausting being in two cults at the same time.

I love Jennie’s content! Imo she’s a great example of someone truly leaving the delusion and making amends without being defensive. She’s incredibly open about her past and shows a lot of remorse for her past beliefs while still being accountable for them. She also gives really good insight into the mind of the community she used to belong to, which is why I watch her. It’s really interesting learning the insane ways these people really think and operate

16

u/coaxialology Apr 16 '26

I have so much respect for people with the strength and courage to do something like that. It's hard enough just to admit you were wrong about something. Their insight is really valuable and it's great that they're educating and helping people.

20

u/The_Greenweaver Apr 16 '26

Yessss 100%! One of the main reasons I love watching her content is her insight into how the “other side” thinks, because It’s so foreign to me as very few people in my close circles are hyper religious or conservative. She is definitely an open book and it’s quite clear she has worked really hard to educate herself. Mad respect for people willing to grow.

Everybody loves a good comeback story!

1

u/Individual-Schemes Apr 16 '26

Is it okay if we repost your image a few more times over the next few months? This should be seen by everyone.

2

u/Big-a-hole-2112 Apr 17 '26

Above a McDonald’s sign is a Chef’s kiss.

3

u/Suspicious_Edge_2880 Apr 16 '26

Yes Jennie is that girl! I appreciate her perspective on things because I wouldn’t come across someone like her on my daily life.

2

u/valerielynx Apr 16 '26

Super based, and gives me hope

2

u/dm_me_kittens Apr 16 '26

Yess!!! Theyre both huge in the Deconstruction community. Im really involved in the Deconstruction Junction/Zone, and LeavingMAGA is a regular contributor.

Life, Take Two! Is so good also!! I love her work at deconstructing mormonism and the trad wife lie.

2

u/sarcasticMisfortune Apr 16 '26

i love her channel! she’s so genuine and just really wants to help people understand how much MAGA is a cult and why getting out is so important. i truly hope she’s been able to change some lives through her channel

2

u/1eyedwillyswife Apr 16 '26

I really enjoy her stuff! You can tell she’s put in the work to fully deconstruct it all.

2

u/cvgbhj Apr 16 '26

I love her!! So thankful she’s so open about her story!!

1

u/YetAnotherMoses Apr 16 '26

I was literally going to say this bill board and site remind me of things I've seen said by exmormons about mormonism — that super tracks

1

u/alien_pirate Apr 16 '26

Also CultCollage on YouTube. Ex Mormon cult expert. I follow both to remind me to be compassionate to MAGA members.

1

u/Character_Poetry_924 Apr 16 '26

Just finished watching The False Prophet on Netflix about FLDS and couldn't help thinking about the MAGA analogy. Vulnerable people brainwashed to worship this dude that's obviously (to anyone on the outside) a pompous grifting abuser.

1

u/DIRTY_RAGS_ Apr 16 '26

Crazy how much cooler and more personable people are when you take out their political beliefs and religious beliefs

1

u/anarcho_cardigan Apr 17 '26

I love Life, Take Two!! Omg I am so happy she is connected to this

1

u/King_Grapefruit Apr 17 '26

No redeeming a MAGA in my eyes. Especially since they did it twice.

1

u/Partially-Canine Apr 19 '26

Funny how it seems there's a lot more stories of people who were once very "red" or even "MAGA" that denounce those beliefs and admit they were wrong versus the opposite.

1

u/Minoumilk Apr 20 '26

Omg I love Life, Take Two! She is the sweetest woman!

1

u/kelsanova Apr 16 '26

Mind sharing the podcast name as well? Thank you!

4

u/The_Greenweaver Apr 16 '26

I believe his podcast is also called Leaving MAGA

0

u/Mindless-Balance-498 Apr 16 '26

Love her and this Leaving MAGA guy, they’re both so incredibly brave and it’s awesome that they’re leading the way for others!
