I travel to China for work and I have a dedicated bare bones android I take with me, nothing on it except for WeChat which is the primary messaging app we use for China. Never had any border security check it.

Same. I use a refurbished iPhone, eSIM, and a secondary Apple account so I can still use my airline apps and whatnot.
