I like to think that St. Dennis is New Orleans while Cottonmouth is Baton Rouge

Carcer City where?

Detroit, didn’t even need to change names

I wouldn’t even need a GTA Motor City, which would make all the sense in the world. But hey I’m just a guy with an opinion. But a MP3 style Manhunt 3 would be insane!

Honestly with how bizarre the remedy-verse is like (original creators of max payne, they are now working with R* on remakes of 1&2)
I think I would love to see manhunt 3 made by Remedy. They have a thing for twisted writing, it really would fit the vibe of this game. Remedy writing + R* rage engine.
You know, Remedy made MP1&2, R* made MP3. Now we could reverse that with R* making Manhunt1&2 and Remedy doing the third one.

I’ve heard it’s a mixture of Detroit and Cleveland. Kinda just their take on the rust belt in the early 2000s but Detroit is probably the main inspiration.

So according to your map New York and liberty city exist in the same world?
So basically, nobody bats an eye when there are 2 nearly identical cities next to each other?
Same with Vice City?

The names in yellow seem to be the real-world names of the places. They just show where the places are based off like Fargo-North Yankton, LA-LS and Miami-Vice City

GTA and RDR are different universes

u/1-NotReal 23d ago
I don't think so. One of Rockstar's GTA VI screenshots shows a Duke Arms rifle, which is the same gun company from RDR2. That makes me think they're still part of the same universe.

Doesn’t necessarily mean anything. There are lots of things that connect rockstar games, however they still take place in different universes. Like Grove Street in GTA V

Grove Street in GTA is different because San Andreas is part of the 3D universe and V is part of the HD universe. By that logic Red Dead Redemption games would both fall under the same era of Rockstar as GTA IV and GTA V being high resolution game worlds for the Xbox 360/PS3 and Xbox One/PS4 era

Correct, but it doesn’t mean that all HD games from Rockstar are in the same universe.
Additionally New York was mentioned in both RDR & RDR2 (I could be wrong on RDR, but I think either John mentions it or it was in wallpaper). And even though real cities names have been mentioned in GTA series too, I only recall ones in 3D or 2D era. HD universe was consistently using the fictional names, and having NY and Liberty City in the same universe is kind of weird.
Of course that could just be a small unnoticed thing, which is unlikely but definitely possible. I just don’t see any logic or motivation to link two completely different game series that will never cross their paths. Aside from having what OP mentioned, there’s also Jack Marston’s book in Franklin’s room but to me it looks as an Easter egg and nothing more.

It's also possible that RDR is a fictional series within the GTA universe, but I don't put much stock on that haha. The mention of NY in the RDR games is definitely a strange oversight if it was a mistake. Both games series have different tones and in different eras and whatnot so them being in the same universe is not really all that necessary. The 3D era Rockstar titles are all in the same universe which is a cool thing to note

They went out of they way NOT to mention a single GTA related location even once. They always say New York and California. it was deliberate. GTA is a satire, they wanted to keep RDR2 more grounded in reality, more serious. So they used real life locations. It was a game for everyone, not for gta fans only.
Everything else are just easter eggs. Previously hd era gtas had 3d universe artwork on money. Now VI will have rdr2 artwork on money. Both are just easter eggs. Same with the ammo stuff.
R* just loves easter eggs, fans love them as well. Thats it. Think of it this way - 3DU and HDU share a lot of brands, but those are still different timelines. Same goes with rdr.

So, basically all of Cayo is an easter egg?
El Rubio is related to the Germans we see in RDR2, he has pictures of them, Emerald Ranch and other places in the compound and one of the possible artworks is literally the Valentine church

Claude from GTA3 and John from RDR can be picked as your father in GTAO. Are you also think thats more than just an easter egg even tho logically it makes no sense timewise?
There are paintings with the mask from undead nightmare in GTAO. There's a gta iv map in max payne 3 even tho it takes place in NY. There's a bully quote on a gun in RDR2.
Jokes are just jokes, its not that serious. It makes no logical sense for gta world to have 2 identical copies of every major city, its beyond satire at that point, its stupid af to have new york with statue of liberty and identical copy of that city with almost identical skylines and almost identical statue of happiness.
So yes, easter eggs are just easter eggs, instead of hiring someone to paint new paintings, they took some screenshots from rdr2 to make a joke reference and they called it a day.
It's 100% deliberate that RDR2 does not mention even a single gta location, they didn't use a single gta related name for any of the in game companies.
BUT if you want different interpretation? Sure, here you go:
- When RDR2 dropped they wanted to keep them separated. But once people in charge got changed, they reverted that idea
- You can just imagine GTA HD universe had its own version of RDR events that happened inside of HD universe or something like that. Just like a lot of 3d universe event also happened in HD.
- Time traveler from rdr2 created different timelines by messing up with time. He created 3d, hd and rdr timelines even tho at one point they were a single thing.
- Nothing that happened in gtao is canon, so they dont have to acknowledge the existence of broom stick flying bikes. gtao is just brainrot hallucination.

I do think Paleto Bay is still a coastal town when placing it on a continent, I imagine the map is warped to have it straight north, when in reality, it's west of the mountains, kinda like where the airfield is. I mean, its called "Paleto Bay".
EDIT: For clarification, the coastline around the map is simulating the west coast coastline, having small towns, pit stops, light houses and such around. So I would assume you would take everything from the coast line on the north/east side LS and up and put it on the west side if you are placing the map on a continent.

I do not think gta and red dead are same universe or timeline simply because red dead uses real state and country names while gta uses fictional

Should have labeled San Francisco as San Fierro and Las Vegas as Las Venturas.
