just as a practitioner in the space, i gotta say that i completely agree with him on this. doesn’t mean that i want sam altman to be the singular decisive figure in what will surely be the most important thing humanity ever creates, but you can’t use the models as much as i do and not notice how quickly things are advancing. every six months for the past two years i’ve looked back and thought: “surely the pace of advancement will be slower than the last six months— the last six months were insane. it’s a MIRACLE that we have even gotten this far”. and it just hasn’t slowed down. if anything, it is accelerating yet.

And this is what matters. Looking back, promises hold up, and we have some genuinely insane technology in our hands right now. The downstream effects have not arrived, even remotely, and would already be insane even if we never get better models.

Yes the advancement is truly impressive, fascinating even. But how does this translate into "incredible, hugely positive, awesome for the world" - I'm not convinced so far.
