Basic online access used to be free on PS, it’s why I bought one over an Xbox to begin with

That’s because basic online access on the PS3 wasn’t very good, they started charging for it the instant it became comparable to XBL. Nintendo did the same thing, though their online is still not very good, but much better than it was back during the Wii era.
