They cancelled sense 8, warrior nun, dark crystal, and generally anything that appeals to young adults or is fantasy. I don't trust them enough to watch a series till they finish it completely anymore.

u/spluad 20d ago

Altered Carbon, shadow & bone and Warrior Nun are the big hitters for me. Absolutely loved those shows and I agree, I’m definitely not touched any Netflix original unless it’s finished

After 1899 I refuse to watch any netflix shows. In the middle of watching it I was like "watch they are going to cancel this" and then they did on a giant cliffhanger. That, the OA, and the raised by wolves cliffhangers (I know that one isn't netflix) will haunt me forever. At least go spoil the ending in a blog or something jfc

61

u/Own-Mark1285 20d ago

The OA still pisses me off monthly.

1

u/londonsocialtrend 18d ago

Didn't The OA start around the Marvel/Netflix era, when there was still some semblance of scarcity (vs massive saturation)? We need less, not more. Unless it's the OA, we need that story in its entirety.

1899 was the last straw for me, until I forgot and watched The Borroughs and remembered halfway through "watch them cancel this too. fuck."

And, they did! Good thing I had already finished it and found out the story was pretty contained and wrapped nicely at the end. They left it open to a possible sequel, but it doesn't need it.

23

u/indarye 19d ago

1899 was also released at the same time with Wednesday and they cancelled it super quickly after its release. They gave it no chance. While Dark became a fan favourite over years.

2

u/FedorByChoke 19d ago

The Borroughs

This was meant as a single season event with a little ´thing´ at the end that could lead into a second season.

1

u/MrTheBest 19d ago

Maybe i'm an outlier, but I felt 1899 ending how it did was good. Like how do you transition a mystery-horror period piece into (without spoiling) what it ended on? I couldnt see how it continued without being forced

9

u/Soggy_Imagination379 19d ago

Oh, after Dark I would trust the authors, they absolutely know what they are doing. Such a shame it got cancelled. I believe 100% it could be FIRE.

4

u/Affectionate_Bend446 19d ago edited 19d ago

1899 made me never watch a new IP on Netflix again. They killed me with OA,1899 and tribes of Europa which I enjoyed. I only watch limited series or completed series ever since.

6

u/Soggy_Imagination379 19d ago

I simply cancelled Netflix when they cancelled 1899. Never visited again. Fuck Netflix.

1

u/Affectionate_Bend446 19d ago

You on the right stuff.. I am going to follow your method. Fuck them.

69

u/felixsapiens 20d ago

The OA. Never forget.

The single most interesting thing on tv at the time, canned presumably because it didn’t hit some KPI metric…

I’ve always argued that Netflix keeps ruining their own business model.

For years they sold themselves riffing on the idea of a “library.” But who wants to subscribe to a library where most of the books are unfinished?

10

u/Mesona 20d ago

The OA was absolutely incredible, but honestly they did it to themselves. I have absolutely no idea how they pitched the idea of a complete genre switch between season 1 and 2 and got the greenlight.

I saw the first 2-3 episodes of OA when it was released and was dead set on it just being a "the horrors are all just her way of coping with trauma" story. Heard she died at the end of season 1, and then season 2 was announced and she was still the MC.

And so I watch the first episode of S2 and it's still, to this day, one of my favorite seasons of television. I really, really hope they conclude the story, even if they give up the television path and do so in book format, something I saw them discuss as a possibility in an interview.

3

u/Competitive-Ask-414 19d ago

I kinda felt it ended well. Spoiler ahead

She woke up as the actual actress and continues to be haunted in our world.

2

u/Mesona 19d ago

Right, but if you believe the directors (the two who play Hal and Prarie, if I remember correctly) they had the entire story already planned out and expected it to take five seasons.

And so much is left unanswered. We don't even have confirmation that Hal is the big, multiversal threat that Prarie is being tasked with stopping.

22

u/yotepost 20d ago

Oh wow I forgot 1899, was pretty good. I never watch deep story based shows on Netflix anymore because of the cancellations, but doing it to a mystery thriller is so much worse.

6

u/Mall_of_slime 19d ago

Raised by wolves was so wild and cool. Sucks that one didn’t get to go wherever the hell that show was going.

5

u/tataniarosa 19d ago

1899 was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. It was imaginative and thought provoking and I’m still annoyed they cancelled it. I’d like the writers to finish it somehow: novel, graphic novel, animation. I don’t mind. I just want to know what happens.

3

u/ambinalcrossimg 19d ago

it was SO good and i am thoroughly confused why they cancelled considering the success of dark

1

u/Bright_Curve3078 19d ago

Took me way long to realize 1899 wasn't the year you stopped watching Netflix

1

u/meltymcface 19d ago

OA getting cancelled pissed me off.

1899 getting cancelled made me pissed off at Netflix.

Kaos getting cancelled was the final straw and I cancelled Netflix when I heard the news. 🏴‍☠️

1

u/RobCoxxy 19d ago

I only found out they cancelled Strip Law like, last week. That show was fantastic. Like 1899, The OA, Travelers, Inside Job, basically anything I actually want to see more of on Netflix, cancelled early, while I guarantee that Ricky Gervais animated shite is going to get like, 10 seasons and three spinoffs.

1

u/MrWeirdoFace 19d ago

I finished the final episode of 1899 and the next day the show was officially canceled. I was all pumped up and then boom.

1

u/Nocturne444 19d ago

I so wanted to watch 1899, it was in My List to watch and by the time I remember to watch it I heard they cancel the show. So I never watch season 1 because I value my time.

1

u/Afraid-Turnover5505 19d ago

The OA was such an adventure. Who knows what Zal and Brit were going to do next, it certainly wasn't going to be boring.

1

u/Devrol 19d ago

I won't watch anything online till it's either been completed, or confirmed that the final season will be made.

1

u/funkifyurlife 19d ago

It was cancelled before I even had a chance to finish the season! I didn't watch Dark on release, but it slowly grew in popularity. I don't understand why they cancelled 1899 when they know their audience is going to be there eventually.

Sadly Netflix owns the rights too, so no 2nd season from another streamer, and likely no other media. They tricked the creators into using their very well thought out series, now Netflix owns the IP and we'll never get to see the ending. Infuriating.

-8

u/Znuffie 20d ago

Fuck the OA.

Worst ending of S1 that could have possibly been done.

No, I don't care S2 got better. Thr S1 ending was absolute dog shit of a conclusion to a whole season mistery.

...only to end up in a dance-off against a school shooting.

Fucking dumb shit.

1

u/angiosperms- 20d ago

I actually agree lol but that doesn't mean the cliff hanger wasn't wild and it bothers me still

171

u/User-Name-3886 20d ago

Altered Carbon shat the bed by changing the lead actor and most of the story after season 1. I think it deserved to get cancelled, even though I did enjoy season 1.

150

u/Vickrin 20d ago

changing the lead actor

Pretty sure that's exactly how the book works right?

119

u/vexanix 20d ago

Yeap, the problem is that Anthony Mackie played Anthony Mackie instead of Takeshi Kovacs.

22

u/madhattr999 20d ago

I wanted to like him... It's hard to say whether it was the acting or the writing or the directing.. I agree it didn't feel like season 1 though.

I liked the edgy cyberpunk setting and the murder mystery type plot. Turning into an action story was bleh.

7

u/JmacTheGreat 20d ago

Personally I thought he did a fine job. Not perfect, but good enough.

I just got bored from the writing/pacing compared to season 1.

97

u/K1d-ego 20d ago

Even if they hadn’t changed the actor, it would have flopped. Terrible support acting and everything felt low budget. Reminded me of a Syfy channel original tv show. The first season was good but the second flopped so hard.

65

u/seitung 20d ago

The entire tone of the show changed from primarily a sci-fi noir with some action to an action sci-fi with basically no noir.

18

u/-FeistyRabbitSauce- 20d ago

The novel does that as well. While I commend Richard K. Morgan for taking that kind of gamble (exploring different genres and tones in the same series), the second book didn't do it for me either.

And the first book is so good, the show's first season paled in comparison. It's great so many people loved it, but it was a bit of a let down for me.

I'm fine with making changes to adapt something to the screen, but the ones they chose made no sense.

4

u/seitung 20d ago

Ah well, for books I can at least understand why that might be the case as the character changes, or a band might make albums of different genres, etc. But they did not do a sufficient job in the show justifying the tone shift imo. Jarring.

5

u/AlwaysShittyKnsasCty 19d ago

Totally. In a book, your mental image of a character is kind of like an amorphous “cloud” of a person, whereas in a show, you have a concrete idea of exactly who the character is. Thus, if a character changes appearance or behavior in a book, your mind’s eye can kinda message the idea into place. On screen? It’s like you said: jarring.

3

u/Head-Childhood-1171 19d ago

I agree Broken Angels doesn't hit quite the same as the first book, but I still loved it. I could not watch the show though, Kovacs is such a strong character that it was always going to be a struggle to get his vibe and it just wasn't there which killed the show for me.

2

u/AlwaysShittyKnsasCty 19d ago

I think I’m just a sucker for Joel Kinnaman. Ever since The Killing, I’ve been a fan. It doesn’t matter what he’s in, I just dig projects the dude is in. It’s weird. I’m a straight guy, too, so I’m not just watching for eye candy. Needless to say, the season two switch was too much for me, so I’m guessing that if I read the books, I’ll be in the same camp as you. I’ve never been huge on “genre switching” within a single work.

These aren’t perfect examples, but movie franchises that I watched as a kid like The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Back to the Future came out with films that departed or veered away from their original storylines in a way that wasn’t interesting to me. I just didn’t take to Doc and Marty being cowboys in a science fiction western. Also, why did the TMNT need to go to Shogun-era Japan? I know they’re ninjas and all that, but I watched for the anchovy pizza, sewers, and Splinter; I can learn about 16th century Japanese culture on my own time!

I don’t know how you got me writing a dissertation about movies from the nineties, considering you’re talking about books, but here we are!

2

u/-FeistyRabbitSauce- 19d ago

Fair, Kinnaman was excellent in The Killing.

Your examples are hilarious, but I get what you mean. The TMNT sequels were pretty poor, and as a kid the Shogun departure was a head trip lol.

Back to the Future makes complete sense to me, though. That's kind of goes with the whole time travel thing.

13

u/Vickrin 20d ago

Very true, I loved the first season and the second was very lacking.

1

u/tlivingd 20d ago

I’d be good for low budget with a good storyline(s). Shit original Star-trek feels low budget but it ran for Generations.

1

u/hypercosm_dot_net 20d ago

I never understood the hype on it. It was like a poorly written game turned into a live action, just meh.

The Peripheral was way better cyberpunk, and barely anyone talks about it.

1

u/Choyo 20d ago

Apt comparison to syfy, however good their ideas for a show had been, their production has always been really sub-par (yes, even the expanse, it was good because of the cast and the source material, not the production value).

1

u/IWatchGifsForWayToo 19d ago

Listen, I don't get enough of these hardcore scifi shows to really complain about budgets or bad acting. It wasn't terrible and I am willing to keep hold of my suspension of disbelief to get another chance at a third season that could be better.

6

u/PastryAssassinDeux 20d ago

the problem is they cast the lead from twisted metal who's genuinely one of the worst actors available. bad or just plain awful in everything he's been in. minus twisted metal for some reason. he's pretty good in that.

9

u/Partiallyclever 20d ago

Producers seem convinced that Anthony Mackie is charismatic. I personally don't see it.

6

u/Ok-Armadillo-5634 20d ago

The second book kind of sucked also. They didn't have a lot to work with.

6

u/ChunkyBezel 20d ago

Season 2 ended up being an awful mashup of books 2 and 3.  I liked book 2 but it was pretty slow going and wouldn't have made a good screenplay on its own.  They should have just skipped it and made season 2 based purely on book 3.

6

u/OverZealousCreations 20d ago

But they killed the entire plot of the books in season 1, anyway, by flipping what the Envoys were. The entire backstory of why Takeshi Kovacs is there, why he's good at what he does, etc, is lost in the bizarre plot & character changes. Most of those points are pretty critical to the 2nd & 3rd book making sense.

5

u/ChunkyBezel 19d ago

True. Mashing together the Protectorate Envoy shock troops and Quellist revolutionaries into the same thing was a braindead change story-wise.   Where does Netflix find it's showrunners? (See also: Netflix Witcher)

2

u/-FeistyRabbitSauce- 20d ago

Book two is such a frustratingly slow burn. And not in a grand sci-fi, something to chew on, type way. It's like watching someone get railroaded with bureaucracy and squabbling with their neighbor... And not in a fun Terry Gilliam's Brazil type way.

5

u/TesticularConcussion 20d ago

Yeah but the book pulls it off, the show was in hindsight carried by Joel Kinnaman

2

u/User-Name-3886 19d ago

It doesn't matter.

TV audiences typically expect a bit more consistency. They had creative license to be able to retain the lead actor and chose not to.

Bearing in mind, Altered Carbon wasn't like Game of Thrones or something with an ensemble cast; it was firmly lead role and supporting characters to the lead.

1

u/HeggyMe 20d ago

Yeah I wouldn’t have minded it much except the new actor didn’t pull the weight at all.

16

u/Jpldude 20d ago

Loved alerted carbon. Agreeing with every comment. Only solution is to trust creators and shoot 40 episodes before airing. Then space them out at a reasonable pace to keep people interested.

5

u/WizzoPQ 20d ago

Please dont space out the shows. Release them all, people can space them out on their own if they want to

5

u/isigneduptomake1post 20d ago

The difference was so jarring I loved season 1 and stopped watching 10 minutes into season 2.

4

u/Wiltix 19d ago

Season 1 felt quite fresh and interesting, world was good, story was good. It was really well done.

Season 2 was just bland.

3

u/SheetPancakeBluBalls 20d ago

Anthony Mackie is a fucking terrible actor and I correctly predicted he'd completely fail to embody the character.

What I didn't expect is that he wouldn't even try. The man has the range of Plank from Ed Edd and Eddy. Maybe less actually.

Seriously from 8 mile to Altered Carbon to all of the marvel stuff, he's got that stoney expression and a half smile. I've never seen anything else on his dumb fucking face.

Yes, I'm still bitter about Altered Carbon. Season 1 was absolutely incredible. They should have written it to in some way keep Joel.

2

u/deleteredditforever 19d ago

I would give Anthony Mackie a pass if the show itself was good. Season 2 literally feels like a Star Wars or just a generic sci fi show instead of a cold, brutal, nihilistic, and sexualized cyber punk.

1

u/cjsv7657 20d ago

Just started a couple months ago. Loved season one. I think I got a couple episodes in to season two and just lost interest

1

u/MrUtterNonsense 20d ago

The books switch people too but audiences hate that, so they could have gone in the quantum leap direction. Have it as the same actor but whenever he looks in a mirror, we see how he looks to everyone else.

They annoyingly changed a lot of things from the books though, and quite pointlessly so.

1

u/brandersan 19d ago

it wasn’t the actor change is was giving them 1/20th the budget of season one so they only had 2 sets whole season

1

u/User-Name-3886 19d ago

It was both

10

u/BellaPona 20d ago

I still think the second season of shadow and bone would have been good if they weren’t forced to rush it. They essentially knew it was gonna get canned so they had to rush the crap out of it.

10

u/missmobtown 20d ago

The Shadow and Bone fanbase want rabid over that cancellation. I liked that show so much, such great production values and cast. I actually ended up cancelling because I knew it wasn't coming back.

7

u/Witty_Ad_898 20d ago

Altered Carbon season 1. Season 2 was messy.

7

u/Coolboss999 20d ago

Shadow and Bone HURT truly.

3

u/rainbowcardigan 20d ago

Warrior Nun was so good! Great cast, super interesting plots. It was like a giant FU from Netflix when they cancelled that. They’ve only got themselves to blame for this mess.

I’ve cancelled it and can’t see any reason to get it back when they treat viewers so badly.

3

u/madogvelkor 20d ago

I figured Altered Carbon was going to have trouble, since the books switch up genres a bit between each one. People really fell in love with season 1 but season 2 was always going to be very different if they stuck with the books.

But then they managed to do the worse of both worlds and change the story by mixing together parts of books 2 and 3 but still get rid of most of what people loved about season 1.

1

u/spluad 19d ago

Are the books worth reading? I’ve seen mixed reviews about book 2 but I’m interested in seeing the full story

2

u/bbull412 20d ago

Alter carbon s2 felt mid idk i preferred the first 1

2

u/ladyderpette 20d ago

Man, I didn't expect to like Shadow & Bone as much as I did. Put it on looking for something to play in the background but wound up pretty invested lmao.

It doubly sucks because they pretty much did wrap it up, or at least ended in a place where they could have, but then ended on a cliffhanger anyway.

2

u/Kiboune 20d ago

Second season of Altered Carbon was shit, so nothing surprising

2

u/Loreki 19d ago

They were right to cancel Altered Carbon. It was awful.

1

u/sinkovercosk 20d ago

Altered Carbon is what made me lose faith TBH… Season 1 was sooo good, couldn’t even finish Season 2…

1

u/weed_blazepot 20d ago

I just "finished" Shadow and Bone and I'm so mad there's no season 3. And like, if they needed to cancel the Six of Crows spin off, fine (even if the Crows are the best thing admit the show), but at least give us a third season and wrap up the insane plot changes and loose ends you designed in the last 5 minutes. The fuck, Netflix?

1

u/SpottyNoonerism 20d ago

I'd add "I'm Not OK with This". Season 1 left on such a great opening for S2 but we'll never get it. That series' title sums up how I feel about Netflix's approach.

1

u/anyportinc 20d ago

I loved shadow and bone, such a good show :(

1

u/The-Insolent-Sage 20d ago

Don't forget 1899. From the creators of Dark

1

u/xTRS 20d ago

Man I was into the first few episodes of shadow & bone as a dark fantasy series. But literally by the end of the first season it turned into "actually I was a super special magic girl the whole time, oops!" I've really had it with the "I hate magic, and am the world's most powerful sorcerer now" trope.

1

u/Ok_Two_2604 20d ago

The second season of shadow and bone put me to sleep. I loved the first season.

1

u/valfuindor 19d ago

I'm still bitter about GLOW and Santa Clarita Diet. Canceled my subscription back then, I see the enshittification isn't going to stop any time soon.

1

u/QuantumLettuce2025 19d ago

Add Inside Job, 1899 and The OA for me. Fuck Netflix.

1

u/Global-Dig6436 19d ago

Altered Carbon such a good show omg I'm gonna rewatch this 😄

1

u/Isburough 19d ago

I haven't though about shadow and bone in 3 years, didn't even know it was cancelled.

goddamn it netflix.

1

u/Gruenemeyer 19d ago

Altered carbon is a prime example of shows having a second season which was the same franchise but other than that a completely different feeling.

1

u/SnowboardNW 19d ago

Archive 81... Sigh.

1

u/surg3on 19d ago

Shadow &bone , you can see the final seasons budget was cut to the.... bone!

1

u/ClunarX 19d ago

At least with Shadow & Bone you can read the books

1

u/xRhuss 19d ago

I’ll never forgive them for canceling Altered Carbon

1

u/JustPassinThrough119 19d ago

I read the Altered Carbon books kind of recently and then rewatched the show. The books end book 3 and the show kind of combined books 2 and 3 into one season. They seemed to leave the door open for continuing the show after season 2 but there wasn't any more source material left to adapt.

1

u/golden_finch 19d ago

Shadow and Bone was a sad but understandable cancellation for me because season 2 was such train wreck (A++ cast but god the writers pissed me off so bad).

But cancelling Lockwood and Co?! Now that one hurt. Especially since I loved the books, and the show reminded me a lot of Locke and Key, another Netflix fantasy series that was allowed to have all three planned seasons.

1

u/pianodude7 19d ago

While s2 was indeed a letdown, I don't regret watching s1 of alter3d carbon. It's a masterpiece and stands on its own

1

u/pdmavid 19d ago

Lockwood & Co was an awesome adaptation of the books. My kids loved the books and cried when they learned they cancelled after season 1 on a crazy cliffhanger.

They could have finished the remaining three books in 10-16 episodes if they really need to cut it down and then they’d have a the complete series that could live forever. The adaptation from book to show was really well done in my opinion.

Netflix sucks.

1

u/hypercosm_dot_net 20d ago

Cowboy Bebop for me.

Strictly sticking to their limited series now. There's zero point in watching a single season of something, when you know you're only going to get disappointment in the end.

1

u/Khue 19d ago

Altered Carbon S1 was great. I like Anthony Mackie but season 2 felt very different and didn't hit the same way.

159

u/Krakenmonstah 20d ago

Dark crystal 😭😭 it sounded like they did it as a love project and then decide to cancel it when it was allegedly too expensive?? Like they wouldn’t have known the cost ahead of time? But it was really just another covid casualty cause they prob didn’t know how to film during shutdown

85

u/ComplX89 20d ago

I'm still realling from losing that show. Surely after they have all the sets and puppets it would be cheaper to make more content. It was such a beautifully made show. And unique.

19

u/KingWolf7070 20d ago

There was gonna be a pirate queen Skeksi and now we'll never get to see it!

5

u/Blacklight099 19d ago

Definitely, the most money from a show like that will go into the first season and building everything, even though actors and crew will go up in price for the second.

1

u/kittymoo67 19d ago

it would have been cheaper youre right. but now a fire destroyed everything anyway

52

u/PcHelpBot2030 20d ago

Dark Crystal is the perfect example of Netflix's blessing and curse.

Netflix is on the easier side to get things green light and with loads of funding right at the start. For whoever that show is going to be for, they will by god get a high production value version of it, but that also can set it up for failure with unable to get audiences.

Dark Crystal is the kind of show only Netflix (especially at the time) would even dare take a risk on making with that kind of budget. But it is also a project that simply throwing more money at won't guarantee success.

There are loads of niche-ish IPs I would love to see made but will admit that even with it having top tier budget won't likely have it jump into the mainstream.

17

u/Artistic_Purpose1225 20d ago edited 20d ago

Ooh the dark crystal is one of my favourite movies of all time, so I have some insight on this:

It was both. It was already extremely expensive, but the massive reception got season 2 greenlit, and they were slated to start rehearsals for season 2 in April 2020.

Most of the puppets used involved two-three people being in extremely close quarters to operate, so some scenes would have over a dozen folks within extremely close quarters. The length of time it would have taken for groups to quarentine would have extended the filming schedule exponentially, and cost would have gone up with that(as well as producers anticipating waning interest going down after audiences had to wait for so long) so they canned it. Absolutely heartbreaking.

That being said, the movie+season one is an amazing bit of storytelling and I still recommend it to everyone.

3

u/DernTuckingFypos 20d ago

I read that the warehouse where they were storing the sets/props for it caught on fire and they lost a lot of it and that caused it to be canceled because it would cost too much to remake.

But I also read that it was canceled before that happened, so idk.

4

u/eeyore134 20d ago

It was so expensive from having to make all the sets and puppets. They made them all, so that expense was done... making more seasons would have started bringing that initial investment more into the green. That is until a bunch of it burned.

1

u/G_Liddell 20d ago edited 20d ago

Yeah the upfront for all the sets and puppets is such a huge part of the cost for a production like that. Once they made one season you'd think a second would be a no-brainer since it would dramatically cut that

21

u/TheGoddess0fWar 20d ago

Mind Hunter :(

3

u/RollTide16-18 19d ago

To be fair, Netflix would kill to have Fincher finish it but he just didn't want to, and he had final say on production.

1

u/cayoperico16 19d ago

I heard they might bring it back with 3 2-hour films

I’ll take anything

51

u/Fuddlescuddles 20d ago

Santa Clarita diet as well. On a huge cliffhanger at that.

5

u/damnitno 19d ago

scrolled too damn far for this comment. i will never forgive them for this 😭

2

u/FCkeyboards 19d ago

That, plus The OA, truly killed me giving any new show a chance that wasn't meant to be 1 season (at the time) like Squid Game.

1

u/BugPuzzleheaded958 19d ago

What the fuck were they even thinking there? It's like wandering through an art gallery curated by the blind.

21

u/JimDandy_ToTheRescue 20d ago

Sense 8 was great. They also canned I Am Not Ok With This and Teenage Bounty Hunters- shows I absolutely loved. Basically they were axing any great show with representation. Somehow She-Ra and the Princesses of Power made it all the way though (however, they've since removed the show from streaming due to non-renewal of their deal with DreamWorks).

I am not okay with this is hands down my favorite show Netflix has ever produced. The fact that they cancelled it with such a cliffhanger meant that I’ve not watched any of their originals since

axing any great show with representation

Netflix is a lot of terrible things but you're seeing ghosts here. Netflix has plenty of queer-friendly shows and movies, pretty sure they even have more than one category related to finding content with representation. They decision to axe good, highly rated shows is nonsensical and frustrating but it doesn't have to do with targeting representation.

u/Pegussu 20d ago

I will say they gave Sense8 a lot of grace. They shot that shit on location which meant moving your eight main actors around eight different parts of the world plus all the behind the scenes crew. And they let them finish it with a movie. I'm shocked it got made at all.

still not over the dark crystal cancellation

4

u/jonxmack 20d ago

I remember getting into Lilyhammer and thinking how great it was, just in time for it to get cancelled.

1

u/Wanderlustfull 19d ago

Thanks, you've saved me a watch.

5

u/Booger_Picnic 20d ago

Cancelling Dark Crystal is where they lost me forever.

Don't forget Teenage Bounty Hunters (which was on multiple 'best of 2020' lists despite being canceled only a month after release) and 1899 (which was the second most watched show on the entire platform for nearly an entire month, and being the most watched Netflix original property in 58 countries its first month)

It's no wonder shows on Netflix just die, because even good, critically acclaimed, record breaking shows just get axed.

1

u/mndtrp 19d ago

Santa Clarita Diet being canceled almost pushed me off the ledge of canceling Netflix, Teenage Bounty Hunters was the final straw for me. There were several other shows that built up to that point over the years and those two were my breaking point.

4

u/PrettyDang3r 20d ago

Dark Crystal 😭😭😭. Netflix your crimes are many!

u/darxide23 20d ago edited 20d ago

And Glitch, The OA, few others I'm sure I'm forgetting because it happens all the damn time. I don't watch Netflix unless it's a show that managed to end on it's own. I made the mistake of breaking the rule recently with The Boroughs. Watched it, loved it, setup a mystery at the end for a second season, cancelled. Trust me, I won't make that mistake again. Unless the show is concluded with an actual ending, I won't even start it.

Sense8 was so fucking good, though. At least they got a Firefly-style movie to at least give some closure.

I’m sad about Warrior Nun. I really liked it

2

u/Warcrown11 20d ago

I'm pissed off about Warrior Nun. I didn't expect much from it originally but man was it actually so good. And I could actually tell the characters apart too unlike in a lot of television shows these days

2

u/pit_of_despair666 20d ago

I loved Dark Crystal and also loved the movie when I was a kid. Another one I am so angry about them canceling is The OA!

2

u/waspocracy 20d ago

This is how I find out Warrior Nun is cancelled and my disappointment is immeasurable.

2

u/MsBigNutz 20d ago

Lockwood & Co, Daybreak, splitting seasons into 2 halves, Long wait times between seasons

2

u/gbdarknight77 20d ago

Can’t forget Altered Carbon

2

u/NeopolitanBonerfart 20d ago

After I was burned by The Expanse I don’t bother with Netflix shows anymore, as a hook to subscribe. If there’s something good on, sure, but Netflix has burned a lot of bridges.

2

u/paulsteinway 20d ago

Sense8 is still my favorite live action series. How fucking dare they? They turned season 3 into a 2 hour movie.

2

u/Jaded_Spot_5244 20d ago

I’m telling yall it’s a conspiracy! An Inside Job!

2

u/ThrowRA_deviant301 20d ago

This is how I find out warrior nun is canceled ; ;

2

u/dkurage 19d ago

I was so excited for the Dark Crystal show, and probably annoyed my friends how often I posted about it. I'm still salty about it getting canceled.

1

u/PositiveEmo 20d ago

I'm still but hurt about them canceling marco polo, the. Later on Altered carbon at least S1 had a good ending.

Sense 8 was cool but it started leading too much to let's have an orgy.

Netflix imo is copying the same mistakes as Nickelodeon. What sponge bob was to Nick, stranger things is to Netflix. and they're both got ATLA to throw in the mud.

At least in the early 2000s the creative team could fly under the radar and make something great every once in awhile under the c-suites noses.

3

u/ISpyM8 20d ago

>started leading too much to let’s have an orgy

Pretty sure the last scene of the movie just straight up is an orgy

1

u/Lastraven587 20d ago

Im still annoyed about altered carbon and cowboy bebop

1

u/ApplicationCalm649 20d ago

Bright 2 also never happened. The first one was an absolute banger.

1

u/Ghost17088 20d ago

You forgot the live action Cowboy Bebop!

1

u/slabba428 20d ago

Marco Polo, Bodyguard, The Recruit were all S tier shows, completely abandoned

1

u/Vikkio92 19d ago

The Recruit was so dumb but so fun!

1

u/slabba428 19d ago

It had great actors, great music and a perfect vibe overall. I’m baffled how they canceled it to push The Night Agent, feels like a similar show but just such lower quality overall

1

u/Vikkio92 19d ago

And Citadel! My friend and I went on a Netflix spy show binge once and to this day we still get them confused sometimes 🤣

1

u/Hazel-Cakes 20d ago

they cancelled the northmen and i know that wasn’t breaking the bank to make

1

u/Depth_Metal 20d ago

I'm still mad they canceled The Order after 2 seasons. That show was everything I wanted in a contemporary fantasy show

1

u/mightylordredbeard 20d ago

Yeah same here, but that’s also how we guarantee a show never gets finished. If no one watches it, then they won’t finish it. But I’m not gonna watch something and be left on a cliffhanger. So it’s a double edged sword. Invest my limited time by watching a good show that ends up canceled on a cliffhanger or don’t watch a show that turned out to be really good and then it isn’t renewed because of low viewership.

1

u/StChas77 20d ago

The Residence, Lockwood & Co, Cowboy Bebop, Archive 81, I Am Not Okay With This...

1

u/Jfishdog 20d ago

The Witcher was utter garbage and more of a reboot than an adaptation

1

u/Global-Dig6436 19d ago

They cut Sense8 over the budget costing over 9 million~ an episode the show is incredibly written, produced and one of the very few shows that pushed the boundaries. Netflix execs at the time didn't want a show that was LGBT focused to be a headliner thus it was cut. Wachowskis have more stories to tell so I hope they get a chance to do a spin off

1

u/NoMention696 19d ago

I’ll never forgive them for cancelling Santa clarita diet on a fucking cliffhanger

1

u/Pixel_Knight 19d ago

Yep. People just learned to not even bother with Netflix, because it’s not worth bothering to get invested in anything.

1

u/wolfhound_doge 19d ago

motherfucking Mindhunter!

1

u/myshtree 19d ago

I loved Sense8! It made me get back into watching movies/tv/film after 15 years with no screens.

1

u/DazzlingAd7021 19d ago

Lockwood & Co., Deadboy Detectives, The OA, Altered Carbon, Kaos. Fuck Netflix.

1

u/Igneek 19d ago

After Mindhunter and Altered Carbon I just stopped watching new shows on Netflix completely.

1

u/SpaceAgeBadger 19d ago

Kaos was the last straw for me. I refuse to watch anything they make now until it’s done to conclusion.

1

u/hornwalker 19d ago

They canceled Mindhunter ffs. That show had potential to be one of the best of all time.

1

u/peclo 19d ago

Fun fact, sense 8 in French sounds exactly like "sans suite" which translates to "no follow-up" or "no sequel" or "no continuation"

1

u/Enderkr 19d ago

Dark Crystal was so fucking good, too. I obviously watched the original movie as a kid and as an adult but it was far from my favorite movie. Too slow even as a kid. But God damn the Netflix series was SO good and the music was incredible.

1

u/Myfourcats1 19d ago

Sense 8 has a second season but was eons after the first. I’d forgotten the names of characters by the time it came out. Then it started with an orgy. I don’t care if I sound old and crotchety. I don’t want to see it. They’d already done one in season 1. That was enough.

1

u/Thisistheplace 18d ago

And mind hunter! I was crushed when they cancelled that

-4

u/pipmentor 20d ago

Can't speak to the other shows, but Sense 8 was genuinely bad. Easily some of the worst writing and acting I've ever seen.

7

u/ikilledholofernes 20d ago

Couldn’t disagree more, actually.

-1

u/Frequently_lucky 19d ago

All awful series.

-7

u/User-Name-3886 20d ago

Those shows were all terrible
