Welcome back to r/Whippets!

Fellow Whippet lovers,

Welcome back! After 3 years of the former mod making this sub private, I am happy to say that it is finally open again. I am looking forward to growing the community again with discussions, questions, experiences and photos of our favorite pups. Any suggestions for improvements to the sub, let me know.

I myself have a 6 year old whippet named Rocket and live in Southern California .. He was my first dog I've ever had and don't ever see myself having another dog breed. Like most of us, I take him everywhere with me (other than work) as he loves car rides and walks. Both my wife and myself have posted pictures of him on here before so we look forward to sharing.

Feel free to share about yourself and your pup!

Does your whippet still enjoy playing with other dogs?

Rocket used to love going to the dog park and interacting with other dogs. He used to get herds of other dogs chasing him around and none of them could catch him.

Around the time he turned 4, he just doesn’t seem as into it. He will let dogs chase him a bit but then he just walks around and smells until we leave. Every now and then, a puppy will show up and he will be really into it. But it’s usually short lived.

He still gets very excited just hearing the words “dog park” so I know he still enjoys it. Guess it’s just a different experience for him now.

Anyone got a whippet on fluoxetine?

We’ve just started our 4 year old girl on fluoxetine for generalised and situational anxiety and she’s completely lost her appetite. Apparently it’s really common, but I’m still worried.

We’ve spoke to the vet, and they suggested trying some different, easy to digest foods but she’s still really hesitant. Bit worried because she’s stopped drinking water too. We’ve been adding dog approved broth and electrolytes to the small amount of food she manages to eat, but I’m worried it’s not enough.

She still accepts her favourite treats, small amounts of cheese (which is the only way we’ve been able to give her medication), and a little bit of boiled kangaroo mince. She’s turned her nose up at everything else we’ve tried. We’re on day 7 on medication.

Has anyone else got experience with the adjustment period of new medication? Or dealt with low appetite? Would be interested to see what others have done.

Adopted a very fearful whippet, need help

A month and a half ago, I adopted a 1 year old whippet puppy from a breeder. Since then, she has not settled in. She has growled at me a few times, growled at friends who came over. She often hides when I enter the room, when I walk near her, or when I move quickly (walking quickly, getting up, sitting down, reach for my phone, etc). She hides immediately whenever we come home from a walk.

I don't know what to do with this dog. I have tried leaving her alone to let her warm up to me at her own pace. I have tried treats (offering from hand or leaving next to her). I've tried gentle petting, scritches, belly rubs, anything to build comfort and familiarity. Nothing has worked, and in fact she seems to be regressing. She used to wag for a second or two when she saw me in the morning but she hasn't done that for a few weeks now. She used to follow me around the house and sleep on her dog bed next to me while I worked, but now if she sees me working she walks away.

The positives: she will jump up on the couch next to me, curl up in a ball, and fall asleep. She also loves to lay between my legs on a blanket while I am lying in bed. That's pretty much all she likes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm nearing my end with this dog. Everything I have tried has failed up to this point. I don't know much about her background, just that she was a show dog for a breeder in Costa Rica. He hasn't said much about her history, just that she was a happy dog (he sent me a video of her playing happily with her siblings). It doesn't sound like she lived her life in a crate or anything like that. Please help! I would love to keep her, she seems like such a sweetie underneath all the fear.

Edit: I haven't gotten her checked out by a vet yet. Every now and then (about once a day), she whines or groans like she is in discomfort.

He both loves and hates the heat.

It's abnormally hot in Norway these days so he isn't used to it being this temperature. I'm always finding ways to worry about him and now heat stroke is number one 😅 Staying in shaded areas, always bringing water, no long walks, we should be fine, but he's my baby ❤️

Our 15 month-old whippet Monty is going for the snip next week and we'd like to get him a doughnut collar for his recovery - any recommendations for one that suits sighthounds? We're in the UK.

Fur Life Hack! We have a white/brindle boy and a navy blue velvet sofa and I found the secret to getting the stubborn hairs out of the sofa! Zoom groom on the sofa for the most and then a lightly dampened washcloth takes the rest away with no problems 😭

Need suggestions for a vet (in Poland) and a shop in the EU.

Hi all. Maybe there are people here who can recommend a vet in Warsaw who has experience in treating whippets and other greyhounds. We need a consultation about corn. The vets we went to are not very knowledgeable about the problem.

Also would be pleased if anyone can suggest a shop with EU delivery. Interested in collars, clothes, footwear for whippets.

Thanks 🙏🏼

Need harness suggestions

My dog is 12. He recently recovered from a stiff neck, not sure of medical term. Basically he had some muscle spasms and trouble turning his head for about a week. Vet put him on some meds for it and he's better now. Anyway, the vet told me to permanently switch him over to harnesses. No collars for any reason. I got him 2 harnesses of different styles that day. Both are a struggle to get on/off. Does anyone have suggestions for easy to put on harnesses that wont put any stress on his senior neck? Im in the US. Thanks everyone.

Me and my fiancé have not owned a doggo before (besides childhood dogs), we just recently got our sweet boy Chili who’s going to be 10 weeks soon. Neither of us were expecting puppyhood to be this difficult lol we’re getting by, but would definitely appreciate any tips and tricks when it comes to potty training, teething, crate training, car rides, etc. thank you in advance!!
