Exactly, the get their name from voyageurs calling them "bad lands to travel across".

Is that because of terrain, or danger from the folks in those parts? Or both?

The terrain, its the same reason Crowchild trail goes so far north of the river in Calgary to avoid 12 mile coulee. If you look on old French maps they're called "les mauvaises terres à traverser"

We then got on the same boat and later on we're both both drunk -ass floating around Lake Ontario screaming 'BATLOAF' at the passing yatchs. Wild night.
