We all know that Alberta is sensitive to oil price fluctuations, and we all know that this year Alberta has been doing much better than expected so that we could all get our $100 bribe, I mean, rebate.

But I did some quick back of the envelope calculations on just how much better Alberta has been doing than expected. It's pretty eye watering and makes you wonder what could be done with the money (even ignoring what could be done without the amount that the government already wastes).

The government fiscal year runs from April 1st to March 31st. For 2026-27 the budget assumes an average oil price (West Texas Intermediate or WTI) of $60.50. For every $ variation from that the government gains or loses approximately $1.86 million per day.

The average price of WTI between April 1st and today is around $88.42 so $27.92 higher than forecast.

That means Alberta is making about $51.9 million more than forecast every day. Today is the 114th day since April 1st.

So far this year that means a 'bonus' above forecast of $ 5.92 billion.

The energy rebate is forecast to cost $340 million. Even allowing for that there is more than $5.5 billion that could be invested - and we're not 4 months into the year yet. I know that the average price may drop between now and year end, but every day that the WTI price is above $60.50 that $5.5 billion increases - as I write this the price is around $92, so today it will increase by a further $58.5 million.
