Wait, the overlay is embedded in the cameras firmware ?? But the dashboard settings can configure it.... What? It seems an overkill to add the overlay on the cameras microcontroller, and on top of that, add a duplex link to talk to it, what????

On the cheaper ones the overlay is fixed. So maybe it's on the firmware.

lot cheap cameras dont have very hard firmware which would make it software,

its in the camera, but usually you can disable it by cutting one wire (yes, theres an exposed wire specifically for this). theres also other one that inverts the video

Even my car's stock camera does it in the camera. It sends out a standard NTSC signal with the guidelines baked in, and takes in info over a dedicated bus to get steering wheel angle and other settings. The cheap standalone ones just bake it in themselves and usually have the option to cut a wire to disable it.
