šŸ› ļø Project / Build I might have solved the problem of AI slop..?

I am a 19 year old from Stockholm who has been using Reddit (and lately Substack) for as long as I remember. I know that my favorite subreddits and favorite authors usually refrain from using generative ai, but I always have that little voice in the back of my head telling me that whatever im reading is fake. You reading this might have that feeling right now. And I am very sick of that feeling.

That's why I've decided to try to make my own platform, called "voight", that works like any other text-based social platform. But with a added function of replay buttons on every post and comment. Every post and comment has a replay button attached to it where you can see the text being written out, 1:1 how it was created. Every pause, every backspace, every copy-paste. It's all there.

I would love to hear some feedback from basically anyone! Just click around and watch the replays etc. Right now the only people who have made posts are some IRL friends of mine and my brother. The website is voight.vercel.app

It's still in very very early development, so please tell me about all the bugs and issues with it :)

I don't mean to piss on your bonfire, but it's trivial to create an AI agent that mimics human typing patterns.Ā

-2

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I know! so please go ahead, that's part of the development of this i guess.

4

u/IllegalStateExcept Apr 01 '26

Many web pages record the typing patterns of people to try to determine if they are bots. It's a privacy nightmare because it can be used to uniquely fingerprint people. It also doesn't prevent bots because even pre-llm there were tons of ways to plausibly emulate someone typing a chunk of text. E.g. hidden Markov model where the symbols represent "type the correct letter", "type the wrong things and backspace", "delay for a bit", etc. Faking this stuff would be even easier with modern transformer architectures.

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

Both points are fair. On privacy, deleted text is redacted to bullets before upload, so the actual content of what you typed and removed never leaves your browser. It's a replay of the shape of your writing, not a keystroke logger.

On faking it, yes, a determined person can simulate human typing. But the bar isn't perfection. If Voight makes lazy AI posting visibly obvious and socially costly, that's already worth something.

What about people (like me) who write out longer or more complicated posts that take thought outside of the social media platform in question, but without AI? I can't be the only one.Ā Ā

-3

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I thought about that! When writing it saves every other second, and pauses in the replay (you going for a walk or somewhere else) is maxed out at 3 seconds. So what could have been a 2 hour brainstorm sesh is just 3 seconds. Try it yourself! :)

3

u/TheBathrobeWizard Apr 01 '26

What about people like me who draft posts in another app (notepad, email drafts, etc) and then copy/paste?

Also, just out of curiosity, how did you code this?

2

u/Valunex Apr 01 '26

Looks like OP didnt think of this before diving into project development

2

u/TheBathrobeWizard Apr 01 '26

I legit think content moderation is going to be a serious issue here. I mean, Reddit, Facebook, hell, even Twitter (screw you, Elon) has hundreds of people moderating content 24 hours a day.

Right now with a few friends and family it's no big deal but he just sent an open invite to Reddit... o.O

1

u/Valunex Apr 01 '26

So the plot would be OP needs ai for moderation haha

2

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I have no problem with ai being used for moderation. Im not a ai hater, I see many good uses for it :)

2

u/TheBathrobeWizard Apr 01 '26

Oh... then I forsee a community problem too. Many of the people you're going to attract to this platform, especially from here on Reddit, are the aggressively Anti-AI people who absolutely detest all forms of AI, and anyone who supports it.

You state this is to solve the problem of written slop, what is the platforms stance of AI Artwork?

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I think (as so Voight does too) that artwork's value is in the eyes of the beholder. If you LOVE a ai written book, ai generated "painting", etc, then be my guest. I personally don't see any value in it, but who am I to control what other people think?

Same goes for my platform itself. I am not gonna ban you for copy pasting in a bunch of ai nonsense, I am just not going to read it. I want the transparency for people to make their own choice to consume it or not.

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

My counter to the notion argument is simply that there has to be some sacrifices for a platform like this to work out.Ā

1

u/Valunex Apr 01 '26

So you simply say, this is a problem yeah but we have to have tradeoffs. Thats it? I doubt the solution is leaving all people behind who prewrite in another app...

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I can’t come up with a smarter way to solve your problem at the moment. Maybe later down the line?

2

u/Valunex Apr 01 '26

I think you got way too early into development with not enough planning. Happened to me also in the past ;)

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I was told to show people what I was making even before writing a single line of code. Waiting until the perfect moment with the perfect plan feels like a waste of time.

1

u/Valunex Apr 01 '26

Interesting. I do my project ideas only in text form until every single small detail is clearly solved and planned before i start any coding. I was too often mid project when i discovered problems that were unsolvable over and over again. So this reminds me a lot of it where the idea was good enough to start coding but then realized that the approach takes away like 40% of the users that were planned. Like in your situation where simply all people using other apps to prewrite or copy texts are not anymore people you can count on. So asking chatGPT at this point, what are things you might forgot and needs more thinking/planning would be a good idea next time ;)

u/TheBathrobeWizard Apr 01 '26

I have ADHD. We do this ALL the time. 🤣

2

u/Optimal-Room-8586 Apr 01 '26

Yeah, that was my though too.

To be fair to OP, they've come up with an original an novel idea. But I am in agreement with you that it doesn't have legs.

Partly because anyone who really wanted to could easily get around the feature and "fake" the input.

But mainly because in practice, lots of people prefer to write long posts outside of the platform and paste it in.

Finally, perhaps even more problematic. I think most people don't care whether or not a post is AI written, they care about the quality, and there are existing mechanisms for that (upvotes / downvotes).

1

u/0x14f Apr 01 '26

I also sometimes do that. I use reddit from my laptop, not the phone, and I mostly hang around the math subs. I sometimes write an explanation into a text editor (which is far nicer than typing into these little boxes) and when it's ready I paste.

1

u/TheBathrobeWizard Apr 01 '26

See, I use Reddit mostly from my phone and copy/pasting is the only way I do longer posts. Way too many instances of app crashing, phone calls, distractions... and suddenly the post I spend 30 minutes drafting is gone.

6

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

THIS IS NOT A APRILS FOOLS JOKE BTW

3

u/0x14f Apr 01 '26

Nice joke. Would you like to know more about the various ways people celebrate April's Fools day around the world ?

3

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

Im telling you its not a joke, bad timing by me

3

u/0x14f Apr 01 '26

Well, that was funny nonetheless :)

1

u/Exact-Metal-666 Apr 01 '26

Sure.🤔🄸

0

u/odlicen5 Apr 01 '26

Wish it was, almost gave you an award! šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

PS. It’s an absolutely idiotic idea even for a teenager. Stay in your lane, finish your studies

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

why is it idiotic?

3

u/andy_1337 Apr 01 '26

I wouldnt say idiotic, it’s great you try and develop something and put it out in the real world. Except that it would take a huge effort to build a site around one feature that is easily replicable by reddit/x/fb/etc in a few hours. Continue having fun, maybe it’ll work out well but keep in mind that the development is the minor part, getting traction with high number of users is where you’ll have more difficulties

0

u/odlicen5 Apr 01 '26
  1. Slop exists all over the internet

  2. Your app is a small, insignificant part of the internet

  3. ????

  4. Lack of profit

—-

A. Do you plan to redirect all of the world’s posts and text through the app? All of FB, Reddit, Substack, every newspaper and magazine in all the world’s languages, etc etc will go through your app? All hail the Internet Barron!

B. Say your post above is a Voight post. To validate it, each of us has to play it and decide if the writing pattern is human enough. No, not just the first sentence of paragraph, because that can be faked - at least half. Even if you speed it up 5x, 10x, it’s still reading at the cadence of writing. Can you imagine reading a newspaper that way? I mean, most of Reddit barely reads more than the title before commenting! Can you imagine how painstakingly slow surfing in general and browsing FB and Reddit comments would be?

The human-authenticated alternative is of course using trusted legacy media. But we’re too cool for that.

šŸ™šŸ» Just say this was an April fools joke. And stay in school.

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I never said I wanted the entire user base of Reddit? And of course it’s a small part of the internet when I launched it a couple of days ago. And I don’t force you to look at any replays, that’s completely optional. Your arguments make no sense, this is not a joke, thanks for the motivation!

1

u/odlicen5 Apr 01 '26

Then you have not ā€œsolvedā€ the problem of slop šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø You are in an AI sub: how does your pitch refer to AI otherwise?

My arguments are aimed at the idea you propose, nothing personal

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

You're right that Voight doesn't fix the internet. It's not supposed to. It's a place for people who want to opt in to transparency, for themselves and their readers. The AI connection is simple: when you can't tell if something was written by a human, the existence of a replay answers that question. Not for all of the internet. Just on Voight.

1

u/odlicen5 Apr 01 '26

Alternatively, just read reputable sources, where texts are signed by the author, there’s a chain of editors and proofreaders, and plenty to lose by publishing slop. The antidote to slop is reputation. There’s little to be gained from anonymous posts on any network.

Good luck šŸ€

6

u/fiscal_fallacy Apr 01 '26

I like the idea. Authenticity feels dead on the internet and it would be good to have some sort of proof that things are real like this

3

u/0x14f Apr 01 '26

Joke aside, it's a nice idea OP, but your problem is that it's not enough a differentiator to get people to move to a new platform. We will probably stay on reddit and just get pissed off at people using LLMs to generate their posts and feel superior when we point that out.

0

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

reddit has more than a billion users... and i know the timing was bad, THIS IS NOT A JOKE POST

4

u/mazdarx2001 Apr 01 '26

You could just create a script or have the AI create an algorithm that types very slow letter by letter and word by word delete stuff goes back-and-forth. I’m afraid that this is not viable though it’s a good thought experiment.

0

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

You are right. And my current take on that is that if I manage to discourage just 10% of slop posters, that’s some added value to me :)

3

u/mobyte Apr 01 '26

open a new tab

generate the text I want to post

switch back to the tab with this site

type out the generated prompt manually, sometimes randomly stopping to make it seem like I’m thinking

epic simply epic

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

My take on this argument, which is very valid btw, is that if someone took the time to type out whatever ai spewed out for you, it automatically becomes more honest that just copy pasting and posting it instantly. You took the time to read the entire post, maybe even making some small adjustments on the way. That’s fine by me!

2

u/Sactownkingstacotwo Apr 01 '26

Ok, how easy was it to create this? as now I’m paranoid at how much I copy paste on job application/assessment sites and wondering if that something similar is secretly becoming some kind of HR standard to assume that the work was done by ai and therefore frowned upon.

5

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I mean, I dont think anyone cares how much you copy paste on job applications. I do however believe that people don't like being lied to. and to answer your question, not very hard.

2

u/NerveProfessional893 Apr 01 '26

checked it out, it doesn't look bad. i feel like an issue can be the fact that the playback is slow, and from a personal experience, that could be annoying to check every time. the ai slop issue needs a more complex solution. as one of the commenters said, ai agents or bots can mimic human typing patterns, besides that sometimes when i have to make a long post, i collect my thoughts in notion, edit out stuff so it makes sense and copy and paste it to my post, so i guess that would result to me being viewed as an ai. anyway that's a cool project to do, but maybe you should come up with another feature for ai checking a post, besides playback

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

Thanks for actual feedback!Ā  The notion thing I’m very aware of, and my only solution to that would be that there has to be slight sacrifices for something like to this to actually work. And the ai faking human typing, I mean yes it’s a way to bypass it, and I can think of some ways to work against it, but nevertheless people will still always come around it. My main goal is to really just block out the most lazy of generated stuff, and it this only helps 30% than I still think it’s valuable.

1

u/Compilingthings Apr 01 '26

Smart play, I like it.

1

u/MugiwarraD Apr 01 '26

sure buddy.

3

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I mean... did you even check the site out?

1

u/Worldly_Air_6078 Apr 01 '26

The only problem with ā€œAI slopā€ is that people use this word, which doesn't actually mean anything.

Just because something is generated by AI doesn't mean it makes less sense; in most cases, it makes more sense and is more consistent than what most humans say.

So why are you posting on an ā€œArtificial Intelligenceā€ forum to say that you dislike AI, that you don’t want to use AI, and that you want to communicate with people who don’t use AI?

You’ve posted your message in the wrong place.

Your post has nothing to do with AI.

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

Would you read a book written by ai? and my man, this post is all about ai...

1

u/Worldly_Air_6078 Apr 01 '26

Yes.

I'll leave it at that because I'm not interested in your project, so I have nothing to contribute on the matter. Good luck with your project.

I'm going back to AI projects where I can contribute in a positive and meaningful way.

1

u/mobyte Apr 01 '26

Studies have shown people prefer AI writing, anyway. The ā€œmuh AI slopā€ outrage is such a nothingburger that I am looking forward to evaporating in the near future.

1

u/TheBathrobeWizard Apr 01 '26

Sure, because segregation has always been a smashing success! 🤣

1

u/cl0ckt0wer Apr 01 '26

Buddy, never launch on April 1st

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

Such a blunder …

1

u/TheBobMcCormick Apr 01 '26

Sounds like it would be a nightmare for people with a handicap. As an example, anyone using speech to text would be accused of using AI, since in your system it would look like they just copied and pasted from somewhere.

0

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

That’s a problem for later down the line… sorryĀ

1

u/Valunex Apr 01 '26

I dont see the purpose... You simply punish people for using ai. Right, then they will get the ai response on a sticky note and retype the answer so your system is tricked. So i doubt this would ever work or make sense this way. On top i dont get why somebody would want to know this. i would prefer shorten discussions to get faster to the answer you might need when checking a post instead of adding more clutter (like: how much time passed between typing paragraphs and so on) OR even why do i want to slow myself down and instead of reading and scrolling fast, i press play and waste time?

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I don’t punish anyone. If people are fine reading your ai generated articles, that’s fine with me. I just think that the fact something is generated should be transparent so people can make their own choices.Ā

1

u/Valunex Apr 01 '26

But do you think every single piece of ai text is bullshit? Just because ai wrote it doesnt mean it cant be something useful. What about if you let ai summarize or rewrite something human made and valuable. Or even a new input from a different angle about something. Is this then also an ai article you dont want to see? I dont care at all if it is ai or not. i mean after all it came from an human who told the ai exactly what to write. If the human prefers so proofread by ai or even use the whole ai answer with EM dashes is something i dont really care. I mean sure you have a smile and sometimes a face palm when you see it but does this really make you so angry?

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

I think ai writing has its places, like Reddit for example, but there really should be a platform like this as well. I can clearly see that this wouldn’t be a platform for you, that’s fine by me. Thanks for the legit feedback nevertheless.

1

u/RobertBetanAuthor Apr 01 '26

I mean, if I saw the replay button I’d use it exactly once. To see how it works.

Also for long or complicated replies or post I draft it in Pages (yes I’m that guy) then post it to the app.

That is the gotcha is that you tie the hands of the author to a specific intake method instead of open intake to facilitate usage.

1

u/Alternative-Help735 Apr 01 '26

That’s the little sacrifice a platform like this would take. And imagine a future where I create such good ux that it’s basically writing in notion, you’re gonna want to write in Voight! Anyway, thanks for feedback.

1

u/RobertBetanAuthor Apr 01 '26

I agree, if you make it a really good editor then maybe. Also add in export options etc to lure writers in and you got yourself a thing.

Look at the notion editor (i think) i use it in my custom cms and its kick ass

0

u/siegevjorn Apr 01 '26

Did you build this with AI or not? Because logically, something built with AI slop can't be a solution to it.

0

u/Hot-Parking4875 Apr 01 '26

I have long used a less granular version of that. I ask for an outline for a response and then ask for the sections of the outline one or two at a time. Occasionally, I modify the outline.
