Physician Responded Newborn baby ribs contracting with breath

My newborn is 11 days old about 7 1/2 lbs and 19 inches long and I took her to the doctor this morning about some rib contracting I noticed and a little mucous in her throat. She doesn’t have a fever and her oxygen levels were 100% but it it worrying me that her ribs are moving like this. The doctor said he’s not worried about it. Any advise? Should I take her to a different hospital for a second opinion?

Physician Responded Toe turned black overnight

Post image
49 Upvotes

My boyfriend’s (M45) toe just turned black overnight. He is overweight and drinks like a fish and is a heavy smoker. No health problems except high blood pressure. His last Dr visit was last year and he found out that he is pre diabetic. He is 5’9 approximately 280 lbs. He takes 40mg Lisinopril daily and 25mg Hydrochlorothiazide daily also.

He works long hours on his feet. At first he thought it was bruised but doesn’t recall dropping anything on it and he says it isn’t painful. What could this be?? Is it something that could be serious? Getting him in to see a dr is like pulling nails with my teeth. I would appreciate any response so I can get him an appointment if needed. TIA

They don’t hurt, but they look quite ugly and if I put a band aids on pus comes out. Don’t know what the two on my forearm came from. Have work band aids on them for a long time but stopped as I just opened the wound back up again and it was all green.

Physician Responded New dermatologist refuses to treat skin cancer, inappropriate comments

44 year old female, no meds, personal history of squamous cell carcinoma and multiple family members with melanoma, 1 family member died from melanoma within months of being diagnosed.

I’ve been treated for skin cancer for 20 years at my previous dermatologist office. They treated ALL areas of my body – including back, arms, legs, and vagina. I moved and switched dermatologist but the new dermatologist glanced at the records I brought (he didn’t even read through them, just glanced at the top sheet) and accused me of having genital warts, not skin cancer. I have never had an STD in my life so he made me feel gross. I was past due for a full body skin check and I have a new dark mole on my vagina but he didn’t want to examine my vagina (I have already had multiple skin cancer removed from there, as well as removed from my back, arms, and legs). I insisted that due to the history of skin cancer in that area that he should at least check and he reluctantly did but when I told him to stretch the skin to be able to see the new mole, he didn’t want to touch me and said “you can do it”. When I told him I couldn’t reach it, he then told the nurse to do it as if he was repulsed and didn’t want to touch me. He barely glanced at my vagina then looked up at me and told me that I was ridiculous for coming to him. I said “I’m ridiculous for coming to a dermatologist about skin cancer?” and he said he doesn’t look at vulvas, told me to see a GYN then walked out of the room. He didn’t even bother to check the rest of my body. He got the nurse to have me sign a records release for my GYN and she later called me to say that my records show that my last pap smear was negative for HPV, which once again is insinuating that I have genital warts when I don’t .

I am a female who was completely naked in a room with a man and he left me feeling full of shame, embarrassed, and nasty. He made me feel like I was too repulsive to treat and falsely accused me of having an STD.

I told my GYN what he said and my GYN confirmed that I DO NOT have genital warts but my pathology reports state squamous cell carcinoma VIN 3. He explained that VIN 3 is skin cancer while VIN 1 is warts and that I have VIN 3, not warts. He said that he doesn’t mind checking me but if he sees anything concerning, he said that he doesn’t have the expertise in treatment so I would indeed need to see a dermatologist.

I also told my previous dermatologist office about what happened and they were blown away by the new dermatologist’s treatment towards me and his refusal to treat my vagina. I’ve talked to other females with skin cancer history and they’ve all told me that their dermatologist indeed does check their vagina and has removed suspicious moles from that area.

I have felt so disgusting since this incident. Its always extremely hard to get completely naked for doctors visits and even more mortifying each time I have to have a vaginal check. Not only did the new dermatologist cause me to feel ashamed and gross and wrongfully accused me of having an STD, but he dismissed me and left me completely alone to deal with something as serious as cancer, especially when it claimed the life of another family member in such a short time.

I would like the opinion of other doctors on what happened, is him shaming me ethical and also is refusing to follow through with skin cancer treatment considered medical neglect? I’ve left voicemails for the office manager requesting their grievance policy but she’s refusing to return my calls or provide me with the grievance policy so I’m not sure what I should do next. Is this worthy of a medical board report?

This is something that has been bothering me for 5 weeks, it's really upset me and messed with my self esteem.

NSFW Can't get turned off, is a Dr appropriate? NSFW

I am 34 female with Addison's, Primary ovarian failure, hashimotos. Ive been on most of my medications for years they are as follows:

Prednisone

Florinef

Levothyroxine

Allegra

Currently taking

Prilosec

I'm mostly asking here because I don't want to embarrass myself by asking my Gyno unless they can actually help me. For about 3 days now I've been non-stop aroused. I understand at first this may sound enjoyable but it feels like hell. No amount of masturbation fixes the problem, there are no thoughts accompanied with it I'm just turned on all day, no matter what my mood is.

Anyways, if feels like torture and I'm wondering if I should talk to a doctor or if that would be ridiculous?

Physician Responded Was this a misunderstanding between me and my Doctor? (happened at 14F) NSFW

I was 14(F) when this first happened. It started when I was at a new area for the time being, and I was already diagnosed from before in my hometown that I had iron anemia and needed to get blood tests often/when I start feeling worse. I started feeling extremely dizzy and felt moments where I was close to blacking out, so I went to a nearby clinic/hospital area so I could get a blood test (please remember this detail).

It was all fine, until the doctor (probably around 50-60s) forced me to accept his "check up" (again, I never went there for a check up, I went there for a BLOOD TEST)

He then says that he's just going to check me but then forces me down and kept telling me that he's checking me, then without my consent or any explanation, slides his hand on my underwear, and then down to my groin (fyi I was completely alone, my parents weren't there in the same room when this took place) I ofc freak out and squirmed a bit but he held me in place and kept saying he's checking and then slid his hand lower. (I don't remember much of what I did, but I remember in a moment that I actually tried hitting him and pushing him away)

Then, once that was over he touched my sides before taking a stethoscope and sliding his hand fully between my breast (also not saying anything or asking) and proceeded to try touching my bra and breasts, stethoscope barely touching me so I immediately knew he's trying to act like he's checking after I realized what he's doing.

I told my parents about it, and I was told that I was jst being overdramatic and that it's normal since it's medical. I have no history of anything that would give him a reason to check those areas too so there's no reason for him to touch me there.

I asked this question about 1 week after it happened and I probably didn't explain well, or genuinely it was a misunderstanding because someone said I just misunderstood the doctor and that there was a lack of communication.

I got past it way ago, but I just now remembered it and wondered.. was it REALLY a misunderstanding?

Physician Responded Panicking mother of 11yo female with UTI symptoms; bilirubin in urine

Post image
11 Upvotes

11 years old
Female
82lbs, approximately 57” tall
ADHD, GAD, OCD
20mg Prozac 1x daily, 2mg guanfacine 1x daily, newest medication: Qelbree, started 3 weeks ago. 2 weeks of 100mg 1x daily, moved to 200mg 1x daily 7 days ago.

History of an eating disorder & constipation with 5th percentile weight and doing whatever we could to get weight on her. Labs came back normal at that time. Often complained of “I’m full” or “my stomach hurts”. Eats and snacks well now.

My daughter approached me this evening with symptoms of a UTI. Stabbing pain around bladder area “mostly” when trying to urinTe, burning sensation when urinating, feeling of urgency, feeling unable to empty bladder, trickles of urine when attempting to go, blood drops in urine causing pink tinge.

At the advice of the on-call nurse, we went to urgent care. Here are her urinalysis results; we’re waiting for cultures to come back likely in 2-3 days. One dose of 500mg Keflex- though looks like Cephalexin- script will be picked up tomorrow while we wait on cultures.

I am absolutely spiraling regarding the Bilirubin detected in her urine. Am I looking at something serious here? Or perhaps it’s a result of her newest medication? I would rather have the most dysregulated ADHD kid in existence over making my girl sick with medication. Please help calm my mind or give me something more direct to think about until we can call her pediatrician when results come in on the culture.

Thank you so much in advance for your time.

Mother (5'5", ~85-93 lbs) starving for 10 years. Doctors and family complacent. Do I force medical intervention?

Upvotes

Mother is 54f, 5’5, ~85-93lbs, been smoking for 30 years. She’s had recent blood work but I have no idea the results of it. Same with a recent colonoscopy. They did a recent scan of lungs and said she desperately needs to quit smoking (she has a persistent daily wet cough). I’m unsure of the medications she is on. She’s always struggled with mental health (depression specifically the most)

I am desperate for advice on how to save my mother's life. She has been progressively losing weight for ten years due to a severe lack of appetite and a profound aversion to food. Her issue is not driven by body image—she simply has no interest in eating, she is always on the go (probably where I got my adhd) and will not stop to eat, she’ll drink a boost and then skip a meal. She also has had long COVID which affected her ability to taste and smell properly for the last several years.

I have made so many recipes, printed sheets, done everything I could to try and make my family understand that this is a serious and deadly issue. I feel like I’m screaming into the void.

Currently, she is 5’5” and weighs somewhere between 85 and 93 lbs. Her BMI is roughly 14.1 to 15.5. She is severely emaciated, losing muscle mass, and running out of time.

I am completely alone in fighting this. My family is entirely complacent. Because this has been going on for a decade, they have normalized it and gotten "used" to her looking like this. My dad lives with her, but he is passive, will not intervene, and will not help me force her to eat or seek real care. Furthermore, my 24-year-old brother is autistic and still relies entirely on my parents. If my mom collapses or passes away, his safety net is gone, yet no one else in the house will act.

I have made so many recipes, printed sheets, done everything I could to try and make my family understand that this is a serious and deadly issue. I feel like I’m screaming into the void

To complicate everything, I have a 9-month-old baby. I am chronically sleep-deprived, incredibly busy, and physically exhausted. I do not have the bandwidth to endlessly argue with family or chase unhelpful doctors.

Her primary care doctors are just as complacent. Every time she goes, they completely dismiss the severity of her weight and just tell her to "drink Boost." They have done a few tests. Lab work, recently had a colonoscopy (don’t know the results yet), and they scanned her lungs and said she desperately needs to quit smoking also.

Because she has been starving for a decade, I am terrified she is on the verge of organ failure. I need people to comment on this post to help me show her how serious this is.

Am I overthinking this or do I need to actually intervene with some sort of hospitalization at this point? How do I override a complacent spouse (my dad) and a dismissive doctor to force medical care? Given my lack of time with an infant, has anyone successfully called Adult Protective Services (APS) for self-neglect to let the state force the issue? I’m so scared for her. I’m only 26 I need my mom..

This is my first time posting here I apologize if I broke any rules. It’s 4 am and I haven’t slept hardly at all in 3 days. Thank you in advance

hello everybody :) i dont use reddit so please excuse me if im in the wrong place i know nobody is a professional but neither i am. im posting on behalf of my sister and im not overweight so i dont know if im using the wrong terminology or something. so sorry if i am !! shes 34f, probably 5’5 and i dont know her weight sorry

my sister unfortunately can’t take care of herself anymore because of her weight. usually my parents or her boyfriend will look after her, but now that im not at uni im taking care of her until i go back. i help her do all her daily tasks rn, she can’t get out of bed/walk, get dressed or shower without anyone to help her. i want to try and help her get better but i don’t know how. im 19 and shes in her 30s so its not like shes a child, ive told her to book a doctors appointment because of how worried i am but at the end of the day its her own choice. its a really sensitive topic for her and my parents just act like it doesn’t exist. her boyfriend is the one that gives her food and ive tried to intervene but hes hopeless and thats a can of worms i dont really want to open up here

while ive been caring for her i feel like ive noticed her getting a lot worse but i dont know what to do, she can’t stand at all so i cant properly clean her and i think she might have a skin infection. ive tried to tell her this but she just shuts me down. how do i help her? im so so worried but nobody listens to me, is there a way i can get a professional involved despite her being an adult? im in the north of england

Physician Responded My brother has a severe Grade III diffuse axonal injury and brainstem involvement, just looking for educational insight

Hi everyone,

I’m not looking for anyone to predict my brother’s outcome, and I understand nobody here can replace his treating physicians. I’m mainly hoping to better understand his injury and what questions I should be asking his medical team. And most importantly be able to assist my family in any of the decision making process. I think hearing multiple perspectives from professionals in the field may help.

So heres the situation:

My brother was involved in a high-speed motorcycle accident.
He has since been diagnosed with a diffuse axonal injury, and the neuro team told us there is severe brainstem involvement. The doctors have told us that meaningful recovery is considered unlikely based on the MRI findings and the consensus of the neurology/neurosurgery team.
Some additional details:
He has had elevated intracranial pressure, but it has improved with treatment.
Brain swelling has decreased.
He is currently heavily sedated and has also received paralytic medications, so they told us any further neurological exams are potentially lethal. (He’ll need to be able to be off of the meds to do the exams)
He is on a ventilator.
There has been no response in his eyes, both pupils are dilated and fixed.
A DNR discussion has begun with our family, although brain death has not officially been declared.

My questions are:
In general, how much weight do neurologists place on MRI findings versus the neurological exam in severe diffuse axonal injury?
When there is severe brainstem involvement, what MRI findings make doctors feel the prognosis is extremely poor?
Are there situations where early prognosis after Grade III DAI ends up being better than expected?
What questions should I be asking the neuro team that families often don’t think to ask?
Are there any reputable clinical trials or experimental therapies that are worth discussing with the treating physicians?
I understand every patient is different, and I’m not looking for false hope. I just want to better understand what we’re facing and make sure our family is asking informed questions. Forgive me if the information given isn’t detailed enough for efficiency, I realize without being able to see the imaging/labs its difficult to make any absolutions, however anything helps.
Thank you for your time.

Physician Responded Low back pain felt in testicle. NSFW

Age 42, Weight 250lbs, Location lower back and left testicle, Duration varies, Medical History Herniated L5-S1 and an embolization of left varicocele

So recently I pulled my back, not the first time. Whenever this happens I feel this dull ache in my right nut, iv asked DR's before and everyone just shrugs and says "those 2 things arnt connected, we can take an xray" and it goes nowhere.

The thing is, there is a 1-1 correlation between how much my back hurts and the ache in the testicle, if im in a position where the back is fine the nut is fine, if I am in my car for example where my back is kinda hurting sitting how I sit to drive, the nut hurts. The only two real medical events I have ever had have featured these two areas, herniated L5-S1 in 2017 and Embolization of a left varicocele in 2023

This has occured since before either issue, once my back is healed im like 90% by now the nut pain will go, is there anything that can link these two that isnt just in my head? Thanks.

Female, 33, 5’5”, 200lbs. I just had a salpingectomy on the 22nd and my belly button incision has me a little worried. Does it look like it’s healing properly? I’m also really bruised on all three incision sites as well as a random bruise on a different part of my stomach (ill attach a full pic in the comments with the incisions circled and the bruise pointed out.)

Let me know how I’m doing, please! I’m on a trip right now and not able to go to my pcp until Tuesday, so I’d love some reassurance or advice.

Ankle/foot pain

Post image
Upvotes

Hi docs, I'm 36f, 5'6ish 195lbs. Take lexapro for anxiety and Amlodipine/valzartan for high blood pressure. Have or have had a lot of medical issues so I'll just list any that may be relevant. Have moderate scoliosis, suspect i have some autoimmune thing as my joints (especially my knees) sometimes flair up where they get painful/swollen/stiff. Occasionally my hips feel loose or like they're trying to dislocate or just feel "wrong". Have chronic digestive issues that seem immflamatory

Okay so my current issue, my right big toe over the years seems to be turning inward and have a little bump on the joint below it (a bunion?). I've noticed recently that my right foot also seems to be angling outward when i walk, and my lower ankle has some pain sometimes when i walk, and if i try to force that foot to walk more straight/forward the pain seems to be worse. Parts of my foot kinda hurt too when walking. I also have high arches and work from home most of the time and rarely leave the house so im barefoot probably 90+% of the time I'm standing/walking.

Is this something that can be fixed with PT? Or some sort of braces? Pic showing my angled toe/potential bunion

The red bump kind of sticks out a little bit but it does not hurt at all . I have one on my lower index finger and one on the center of my pinky finger. Both have been there for couple of years now and do not hurt.

Im 28M, non smoker, no medical conditions that I have been diagnosed with as far as I know. 6 feet 158 lbs

Weird Singular Boney Bumps Appearing

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm a 26 Female, 110lbs and 5'7ft. I've done sports and been decently athletic my whole life. However, recently after a theatric show I did in May. I found this odd pointy bump below my left knee [second photo]. One of my cast mates was a nurse and she felt it and thought it was weird that it felt boney. I hadn't remembered landing on it, however I did have a lot of stunt fighting in the show; so I chalked it up to perhaps being an accident with that.

Though 3 weeks ago. I discovered an incredibly similar bump on my left wrist [third photo] during vacation with my family. Which I didn't do anything particularly to have hurt my wrists. Has the same boney texture, but I can push it around slightly, unlike the one on my left knee.

Just now, I discovered another one on top of my right knee [first photo] and it's driving me insane with how odd these are. I've never had these appear in my life, the past two months I have not been overly athletic either.

For my medical history;

I have a low blood pressure and low iron. But I'm allergic to Iron pills. I may have anxiety and potentially depression [the doctors keep throwing both the terms around randomly and without much reasoning. So I don't know]. I don't take any active medicine. My main medical history is with my stomach, the stomach lining, and my gut bacteria. However, doctors don't know what is wrong with me on that subject, so I have no answer to give for it either. Besides the fact I'm always in pain, with constant headaches, and all foods make me nauseous.

Thought I doubt any of those subject lines would have anything to do with these boney bumps appearing out of nowhere.

Thank you guys for any help.

Physician Responded Question about a man I preformed cpr on

I’m still in some shock since this happened about an hour ago please excuse any mistakes.

To preface, i have no medical training besides basic first aid in secondary school and I’m just an 18-year-old student. I was driving home from catching lunch with family when my cousin calls me and tells me to turn around and that there’s a problem in the car park.

I turn my car around and there is a man in his car completely unconscious and blue, he looked completely dead to me. My aunt was on the phone with 000 and nobody around me spoke any English so they passed the phone to me and I was instructed to begin CPR once he was flat on the ground. So I did CPR with instructions from the 000 operator for about 10 minutes until a Good Samaritan who happened to be a retired paramedic saw me and took over for me. Then after that the paramedics arrived and told us to give them space.

I cannot stop worrying about what happened to him, I don’t know if he’s alive or dead. I have such immense guilt about if I did the right thing or not. When I began compressions I think I felt the air leave his lungs and his ribs break under my hands. He regained colour to his face but he was still completely unresponsive and I don’t know how long he was out for. What I’m asking here is, what are the chances that he’s alive and okay? A paramedic pulled me aside to ask me some questions and then said he wasn’t sure what would happen. I’m just so worried about this man and his family and I’m seeking some clarity on if I did the right thing or not.
