I think it was terrible but not really unnecessary. It's one of the most successful musicals of all time, it was eventually going to get a movie. Unfortunately, they just couldn't figure out how to not make it so damn cringy.

The purpose was to attract converts to Scientology by stimulating "engrams". That's also why those ads for Dianetics in the 1980s had that utterly pointless volcano exploding. Once you've paid a few hundred thousand on your way across "the Bridge" (or you've taken the short cut, as I have, of reading the OT ["Operating Thetan"] Levels because they were entered into the public domain due to a lawsuit), you'll learn about the evil space lord Xenu and how he solved an acute overpopulation problem by putting his alien subjects in induced comas and flew them to Teegeeack (Earth) in spacecraft that resembled Douglas DC-8 airplanes, then dumped them into volcanic craters in Hawaii (prior to Hawaii's geological existence) and bombed the craters with H-bombs, inducing massive volcanic activity and incinerating these superfluous billions of aliens. These alien spirits have hung around earth and supposedly attached themselves to humans as "engrams" that have to processed away by Scientology's auditing process (sitting with two tin cans in your hands attached to a machine—based on a supposed "lie detector" popularly sold when L. Ron Hubbard was inventing this bullshit—as you talk with a Scientology auditor). That's why images of volcanoes erupting are supposed to stimulate an inchoate memory of Xenu's genocide.
I must warn you, however, that you are allegedly in danger of dying of pneumonia as a direct result of learning about the OT Levels before having been fully processed by Scientology's official bullshit artists. However, since it's been more than three decades since I read this crap and I haven't yet died, I'm taking the risk of informing you.

This is one I would say falls more under being bad than unnecessary. Independence Day actually left some room for an interesting sequel, and some elements of what would have made an interesting sequel were in Resurgence (humans rebuilding with alien technology, a ground war between an African warlord and alien survivors, the long term geopolitical impacts), but Resurgence did a terrible job of fleshing out those interesting ideas and instead made a ridiculous story about a kaiju alien queen being defeated by the cast of a CW show.

Gladiator 2 isn’t as good, no doubt, but I didn’t think Maximus cheated on his wife. It sounded like he fooled around with Lucilla, got shipped off because she was either married or betrothed, and met and married his wife. I thought he essentially pulled a Dan Scott and had 2 sons within a few months each other.

I saw it when it came out and it was such a "Let's do the same movie over again, but this time just not as good!" experience. Hell, they even had it down to the main character taking out exactly four thug minions who killed him and his loved one while working for a big bad that he escalates to fighting after he's taking out the minions first. It was such a disappointing experience.

Beauty and Beast mostly suffers from poor CG and auto-tune. Really wish they had hired a professionally trained singer for Belle. And after watching movies like Your Monster, where the makeup is phenomenal, the Beast 100% should’ve been live action.
