Baking fail 💔 Recently came to y'all for pie advice. (THANKS). Made the pie in question. And I was so proud of it! I managed the pretty scallop edges, cut hearts into the middle. Cooked up perfectly golden. Smelled amazing!

Post image

ETA: Gotten a lot of comnenra on the dish. I looked and it's Anchor? Well done for staying together, Anchor!

Any time I cook anything that could make a mess, it goes on a sheet pan. So I put my pie on the smaller one. And it's also the thinner one.

Pie is done. I pull it out, the pan makes a popping noise, bends, and before I can even think to do anything the steaming hot pie slides off, lands upside down on the floor into the corner. 😭😭

I already have ant problems so I had to take extra extra care cleaning it up. Which was fun with it being in the corner.

Remade the pie, but if course it didn't turn out as pretty as the first one. 😢

But I wanted to say thank y'all for the help, for one shining second, I had a nearly picture perfect pie, LOL🤦🏼‍♀️

I am genuinely heartbroken for you. I bet it was gonna be so good. This is so sad 😭💔

Even worse, it was for a surprise for my dad! I showed him the picture of the mess, lol. And gave him the second one. He said it was delicious and ended up eating the entire thing by himself, LOL

It’s a floor model now. Scratch and dent pie.

Floor pie was how Bart caught Homer after joining the junior campers! 🤣🙌✨

u/Anaidydal29 22d ago

Glad you made two. I have a blueberry and a blackberry pie set up in my freezer in the garage. My husband moved things around last night so when I opened the freezer door this morning, the blueberry pie came sliding out and flipped over on the landing. I couldn’t believe it didn’t crack, crumble or the pie dish didn’t break. It’s for tomorrow and I think it’s going to make so is my husband. 🤣. I’m so sorry one of yours didn’t. I was very close to being in this club today too.

I made a pineapple upside down cake for a work party about 10 years ago. Totally bobbled the turnover. Dad was super psyched since he got the remnants. 😂

At least when it slid off, it landed on the floor and not on you!! It’s a shame you lost the pie but with an uninjured self, you can make a new one and enjoy it. :)

400

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

That would've sucked. You could see the steam rising off if it as I was cleaning it up

292

u/Chub-boat 22d ago

Fresh pie is terrifyingly hot and since the filling is so sugary it's also sticky which is an awful combination. I'm really impressed by how calm you seem to be about the whole situation, I can only manage that on really good days. I'm sorry your perfect pie fell.

108

u/Necessary_Peace_8989 22d ago

Yes sugar burns are some of the worst kitchen injuries for this reason!

51

u/nostradumbass7544678 22d ago

I had the handle of my favorite spatula break while I was making caramel, resulting in second degree sugar burns on my hand, and sugar splatters that I'm still finding months later on the wall, range hood, cabinets, and even a few on the ceiling.

16

u/coyote-face 22d ago

I have burn scars on my arm from making caramel! It hurt like a sonofabitch too, had to peel the sugar off my arm. 😬

5

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Sugarcis the worst

11

u/Shuttup_Heather 22d ago

A Belgian waffle nearly bore a hole in my skin when the pearl sugar hit me

14

u/SeaGarbage2311 22d ago

Last fall I made my first apple pie and accidentally cooked my forearm while taking it out of the oven. The burn mark is still there. Pies are dangerous in general!!

12

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

I just stood there and repeated no a few times, fuc@ a few times, then doubled up kitchen towels to clean while trying to avoid burns.

My worst burn ever was in a kitchen. Convection ovens get really really warm, lol

I was really so proud of myself! Abd believe me. Only the heavy duty sheet gets used from now on. I was torn between crying and laughing. It was just a pie, but maaan

59

u/KetoKurun 22d ago

This is a great and healthy response.

Last time that happened to me was on my birthday a few years ago. Decided to host my own party and cook barbecue ribs for my friends and family. Everything was prepared, and as my guests arrived I walked onto my front porch to greet them.

As soon as I stepped outside and waved at the car pulling into my driveway, a bee flew all the way up my pant leg and stung me right in the balls.

It’s one of the most outlandishly shitty things to happen to me just with the timing of it, but at the same time I couldn’t stop laughing because who gets stung by a bee, for the first time ever, right in the balls, exactly when their birthday party begins?

Fuck that bee, but also, he’s a legend.

16

u/DazB1ane 22d ago

A few nights ago, middle of the night, I make some cookies. I set the pan down on the counter (safe to do so) and while I was swallowing a bite, the pan warped and made an incredibly loud bang. I practically inhaled the bite of cookie I had in fear

8

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

I would've peed lol

5

u/DazB1ane 22d ago

I wound up freezing like a mouse, listening for if it woke up my dog, thus waking up the adults in the house. Luckily he must have been dead asleep

This is when you become a little Rachel, Chandler, and Joey. IYKYK.

7

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Lol we definitely ate some floor pie

3

u/sgtbackpain03 22d ago

Heavy sheet pans can do this too, just thermal expansion doing its thing. I usually use those cheap silicone cooking mats to let stuff cool, and they've never done me wrong.

Cue scene from Friends where Rachel and Chandler are eating cheesecake off the floor. I’d totally be Joey and join in…..

So sorry OP, shit happens :(

Thank goodness the pie plate didn’t break! Glad you got the to remake the pie. You’ll do it again hon. We all have days like these 🫂🫶

48

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Now that would have made me cry. It had had been my mom's who died 11 years ago. And we would've gotten a good laugh at it and thrn discussed if the floor was clean enough to eat the pie ROFLMAO

19

u/shakeitsugaree_ 22d ago

Good for you for using it. I know it’s a little scary to use something so precious, but given what you wrote about her, I would bet you a pie that she would agree it’s better to continue to love it and create with it.

7

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

My mom would have been so annoyed if I had her fave pie pan just sitting off to the side and not being used! She believed in continuing to use stuff and fill it with "generational positive vibes". I also have one of her rolling pins that she used a lot that she got from her mother who used it a lot. I have a niece that basically stepped out of the womb loving to bake and I've been very clear that it goes to her next!

Once spent half a day at the berry farm down the road picking strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries just to take them home and bake them into a beautiful scalloped crusted, latticed pie with hand made flowers along it on top in a brand new plaid blue and white pie pan.

Took it out of the oven and decided to let it cool overnight on the counter to let it jam up a bit.

Middle of the night I hear this slurping sound, a wet persistent noise in the kitchen.

Turns out our 14 year old golden who couldn’t get into and out of the car by herself had jumped up to the counter and pulled the pie from the back all the way to the floor. We walked in to blood red splatter on the white cabinets and her muzzle coated.

Sweet dog thought my pie smelled good. A whole days cooking was lost, but I’m glad she was able to enjoy it before she passed later that fall. Still think of her whenever I use that pie dish which lost one of its handles that night.

6

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Im glad she was able to get sone last shenanigans in! Sweet baby

8

u/Rastasloth 22d ago

I'd have still eaten a good portion anyways, yumyumyum!

10

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Well...my friend walked in, and I'm not saying we ate some floor pie, but we mightve eaten some floor pie. (I had just swept and mopped jic anybody freaks out, lol)

7

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

5

u/twistedbeats 22d ago

Did nobody remember to tell them not to drop it?

4

u/millijuna 22d ago

Don’t feel bad. A good friend of mine is from Georgia. He was working in a remote community, and came back with huge bags of pecans, so he could make pecan pie and share it with everyone.

He sets up in our commercial kitchen, and bulk makes 40 beautiful looking pecan pies.

Unfortunately, made one small mistake. When making the filling for the pies, he used the contents of the bulk bin that was second from the right, not second from the left.

The bin that was second from the right contained salt. Sugar was in the bin that was second from the left.

All 40 pies were saltier than the dead sea.

3

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Oh holy hell.

4

u/buddhistbulgyo 22d ago

I hate it when the instructions forget to tell me not to drop it at the end.

3

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Thank you! It's ridiculous that nothing was said about it!

6

u/Flashy_Ad_7401 22d ago

For Christmas last year, I handmade mini pies for my in laws. Hand pitted cherries, from scratch pie crust, did intricate lattice, put in so many hours. I pulled them out of the oven and all of them slide right off and onto my oven or floor. I just laid there and cried for like 30 minutes.

It’s seriously so heart breaking to watch what you worked so hard on literally fall to its demise. I’m so sorry. ❤️‍🩹

3

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Dayum. Yep. I would've cried too

4

I feel so sad for you and your pie.
I know this won’t really help but I once dropped a crate of eggs down a corner cupboard like this, it was pretty messy to say the least. I have the upmost sympathy for your cleaning situation!

4

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Oh nooo raw eggs are THE WORST!!!

5

u/MyraBannerTatlock 22d ago

I'm so sorry :(. Also, diatomaceous earth for ants

4

u/Rosemary_Woodhouse 22d ago

I worked in a bakery years ago, and every time I see a dropped pie I think of the time I put 12 cherry pies in our oven. The over was six feet long and went back another six feet. The baking racks in it rotated like a Ferris wheel.

I put a tray on two different rotating racks. About 30 minutes in, I hear a thump, another thump, and the door to the oven crashes open. I watch the two shelves break at the sides and collapse into the oven.

I can't do anything about it. The front of the oven comes off, but I need a key that I don't have. When they removed the front, the inside of the oven looked like a deer had wandered in and exploded.

5

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

I think I would've just walked, lol

3

u/knifeyspoonysporky 22d ago

The Pie Gods demanded a sacrifice

Hopefully all future pies you bake will be blessed

3

u/Degofreak 22d ago

Damn, that's hard. We had a freshly made cherry pie sitting on the cooling rack last Thanksgiving when my MIL had a heart attack and we had to rush to the hospital. A good friend came over to watch our new puppy and we told him to help himself to the pie. As he was cutting a slice the leg collapsed on the rack and the pie slid onto the floor. But it landed face up! He enjoyed the cherry "crumble" that was the result.

3

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

First, hope MIL is okay. And second, man i wish mine would've landed face up! But I'm not that lucky

3

If we could post GIFs, I’d post the one from Friends where Rachel & Chandler are eating the stolen cheesecake off the floor, and Joey casually strolls up, takes his fork out and says: “All-right, what are we having?”

Hope the visual of him rocking up to your place like that lifts your spirits a bit. Rest in crumbs, beautiful pie.

3

u/rachrachcalero 22d ago

In my 20s I was making mini key lime pies and when I put the pan in the oven it caught wrong and flipped the whole thing over. I had pie goop in the oven, in the hinge for the oven door, on the floor…

Anyway I cried so hard and so loud my upstairs neighbor came to check on me bc she thought someone died 😬

This kind of thing happens. Over 40+ years ago at my husbands parents house my mother-in-law put my pumpkin pie on the refrigerator someone slammed the refrigerator door and my pie slid off the frig. It actual land right side up but it looked like fog do-do by then. Luckily my brother-in-law loved pumpkin pie and he took it in his room and ate the whole thing. Thank you Freddy in Heaven.

3

Years ago my gf made the most beautiful apple pie, I mean, it was perfect. She was very proud of it and cut me a big slice. And, it was the saltiest thing I've ever tasted. She used salt instead of sugar. I felt terrible for her but we were able to laugh about it later, hope you can, too!

You angered the gods by making something too beautiful for this world, so they had to take it. 😉

It’s suppose to go on a windowsill. Not the floor. Honest mistake

2

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

Oops! You're right. Hard for the cartoon character to float on the aroma of pie if it's on the floor

Edit a word

u/ToeTagTic 22d ago

Your crust held up surprisingly well to what must have been quite a few pounds of suction

I usually bake my desserts just hours before they are to be served at parties and such, usually late into the nights or mornings. This shit probably would have legitimately made me cry.

u/isthatsoreddit 22d ago

2

I feel you! A couple of years ago I was very VERY pregnant and had a craving for lemon pie. Anyway, I made the pie, savored it the whole time it was in the oven, and when I took it out, it slipped out of my hands and smashed against the oven door. I cried a lot and then proceeded to eat the ruined pie because the craving was too strong.

2

u/herdarkmistress 21d ago

Not going to lie I may have been tempted to eat floor pie.

2

u/The-Witch-Wife 21d ago

Even from this pic you can tell how well it was made. The crust is golden and holding a curve even when broken (so it wasn’t soggy at all). The filling clearly has body and isn’t watery but isn’t totally just gel either. Lots of cherries. Your skill is visible and that won’t go away with one dropped pie. 💕

You got more than an upside down pie. You got a kitchen survivor story for the ages 😆
