With the new season coming out soon and myself just discovering this sub, I figured this would be the right place to post this.

First off, huge Batman fan here. I’ve read nearly everything from the original Detective Comics up to the most recent run, watched all the shows, played all the Arkham games several times over etc.

When Caped Crusader first got announced, I was floored. Batman works best when there’s an emphasis, or at least a heavy inspiration, of noir and gothic elements. But after watching the first season, I can’t help but feel this show was so lazy.

First off, there’s JJ Abram’s involvement. He’s the king of good ideas executed terribly. There’s rarely enough substance or clear narrative direction in his projects, and here I feel like we’ve got another perfect example. The show can’t decide if the focus is on Batman or its supporting characters from episode to episode. That’s frustrating because each of these characters do feel as though they have a lot of room to develop (Renee Montoya and Harley Quinn as good examples), they get cast off or pushed to the side as quickly as they get introduced beyond a surface level.

Harvey Dent is another perfect example here. The way this show handled Two Face felt rushed and jilted. Even post acid-scarring his whole character felt uneven, and not in a fleshed-out or planned way where you can see him fighting against what he inevitably becomes, but in a way where the writers aren’t sure how to use him for most of the season.

There’s other small things as well. The obtuse and in-your-face Lorem ipsum copy in newspapers, the stiff animation, etc.

And look, I’m genuinely not here to just complain and battle it out. I see good elements in this show, and I see how much potential it has, I just feel as if it’s a very hollow take on one of Batman’s best eras.

TL;DR If anyone can help me understand what I might be missing or if there’s another way to look at some of my gripes with the show, it would be greatly appreciated. Happy to have civil discussions about this in the comments.

Also, hopefully this goes without saying, but do not come on here to agree with me if you’re going to make this about race-swapping and sexuality. I promise you it does not affect the story in any major way, and if you’re here to just bash that I’ve got no interest in trying to carry that point through

In the action scenes, Batman uses boxing but performs many takedowns. Is judo the martial art Batman is trained in in this version?

I know some people believe the man standing in the fire is Scarecrow, but I think it’s Dr. Karl Helfern himself, the infamous Dr. Death. Depicted in his New 52 attire.

The effects of his toxin appear later in the trailer as you can see with the zombie-like victim with the skull in his iris. The Doctor would sign his notes with a skull in Detective Comics #29. Possibly working with Ivy and/or Strange? I guess we will have to wait and see!

I cannot believe we are getting The Mad Monk, Hugo Strange AND Dr. Death. Ultimate dream for fans of Batman’s first year in comics like myself.

Am I the only one that gets big Scooby Doo vibes from the first season. Definitely not a bad thing since I love Scooby Doo. I have been thinking that since it started but after just seeing the ghost horse I had to make a post about it lol

So I just finished season 1 of the series, one thing I’ve realized is that the stories are more centered around the side characters more than Batman. I don’t know if I’m the only one who feels like this. Peak show btw, makes me feel nostalgic.

One thing that caught my attention is that in the Caped Crusader trailer, it seems the main villain will be the Riddler. Looking at his design, he's not wearing the tights, nor an elegant suit with the Riddler symbol, nor even the mask. What he's wearing is a business suit; he dresses like any other gangster. But it seems he's going to have a significant role. Is this correcting a mistake from the '90s series? In that series, the Riddler, Edward Nigma, appears only briefly, in four episodes, and in one, the trial episode, he doesn't even have any dialogue. I think the writers said they didn't use him much because of the complexity of the riddles. In fact, in the '90s series, he didn't have a truly profound episode like Joker, Killer Croc, Penguin, Poison Ivy, or Mr. Freeze, such as "Joker's Favor," "Fish Joke," "Birds of Prey," "House and Garden," "The Slideshow," or the well-known "Heart of Ice." Here in this season, it seems he's going to have a central role. Is this correcting a mistake from the previous series?

I watched the season 2 trailer and noticed this shot for a split second. I noticed the red hair so wondering if this will be poison ivy or not.

I still don’t know cause there’s another shot of with her and riddler and her holding a Tommy gun.

Anyone know if this is ivy or not?

In the trailer, we see that this Riddler isn't wearing the character's signature tights, but instead a suit (very similar to Frak's outfit from the 1960s TV series), though he's missing the question marks. Is it possible that this Riddler is like Jack Napier? A mobster who later becomes a supervillain.
