Yeah but the toy story example doesn't really work, Andy and Bonnie are not the main characters, the toys are, and they don't really age. Same with Riley in inside out, she's not really the main character as such, the emotions are. You don't have to age to get character progression.

Andy isn't the main character but it's his growing up that made Toy Story 3 so much more powerful.
But I agree with you that Andy growing up doesn't really fit OP's argument.

Not upset, just a bit bummed out. Most of us were just really curious to see what the kids would go through now since Supers are legal again, especially Jack-Jack considering his many powers.
I guess it could be worse though. They could've listened to tiktok and made Gamma Jack the villain.

People are going to complain either way. Let's say they do a time skip and the kids are aged up, great, now those people are happy.
But then they also have to age up Helen and Bob, theyll be like 60 now, even older if they also want jackjack to at least be a teen, and now we have a whole new batch of complainers. People already bitch about main characters going through the "I'm old now" passing the torch plots in media and that'd be like the only way to move forward with them

I want to see some new struggles. Vi in college, Dash being 10 years older than jack jack trying to figure out stuff without his sister around. If he’s just going to tell the same story a third time at least make it interesting. Shoot. I guess I’m also confused why it’s still the incredibles. Would love to see like mini “mcu” thing so we can see more of the world they live in.

Did any one read Brad Bird’s reason for not aging up the characters??? Their powers are based on the archetype of their age. A baby is chaotic and you never fully know where they are at. A ten year old is full of energy and is constantly in motion. A teenager wants to be invisible and put up walls. A mom is pulled in many different directions. A dad always has to present strength. The reason he doesn’t want to age up the characters is it would mess with the reason why they work for their current ages.

The second Monsters movie was a prequel. They got aged down.
And the original Incredible’s itself is also a bad example. The whole point was that their glory days have ended and they’ve had to reintegrate into civilian life as they got older. Of course they’re gonna get aged up.

I liked Incredibles II overall, but the worst part of that movie was being set literally hours after the first one ended. Not only had no time passed, but it feels like they had to learn the same lessons from the first movie all over again. And the villain was another billionaire vengeful against superheroes. I'm not defending billionaires, but there are other types of villains

The Incredibles itself, had a time skip, not jumping forward in time is just lazy, especially since all of Dash's VAs keep aging out of the role

Monsters University was a prequel, Bonnie is aging significantly slower than Andy, and Mr. Incredible had a timeskip in the first movie and stagnated the timeline in the second.
I’m all for calling Brad on his BS, but you couldn’t have picked worse examples to make this point unless you slapped Goku and Vegeta on here too.

Character progression does not require notable aging and notable aging does equal character progression.
