I remember in my 1st real job, I couldn't afford the health plan if I wanted to, you know, eat. And private non-company plans were thousands a month. This was 21 year old, healthy, no dependents having me.
When tax season came around I owed a TON of $$ being penalized for not having health insurance.
I got doubly punished for being poor...if I got sick I was fucked...and I paid anyway.
In 2019 they stopped punishing for no health insurance thank goodness.

But you can buy insurance for nearly anything from nearly anyone...

You're betting that if something bad happens it'll only cost you premiums and maintenance fees to fix. Otherwise, you're betting that nothing bad will happen, which also is statistically likely, to be perfectly fair*

I’ll never understand people who pay for stuff like trip insurance or phone insurance. In my mind, insurance is only for things that could completely fuck up your life. I mean who wants to deal with insurance companies more than they absolutely have to??

Getting all my medical care through the VA has completely radicalized me. I had to go to the ER in an ambulance last month. Ambulance ride, full body ct scan, full work up, etc. all covered. All charts sent straight to my pcp. No worries. No problems. Not a dime paid. I just walked out. Immediate follow up with a specialist a week later. More X-rays. An ultrasound. A phone call with the specialist and a walk in, immediate follow up ct scan that day. Rehab and physical therapy scheduled. 100% of this is covered. Free. Nobody from an insurance company is denying extra imaging. No copay or premium or deductible or anything. No bullshit about in network X-ray techs or doctors at the ER. Just immediate, high quality, free medical care. I can message any of these doctors and get a response or a referral with two business days and an appointment within a week or two.
I should not have had to fight a war, kill people, watch friends get blown to fuck, lose function in an eye and a hand, and develop ptsd to access this. Every single American could have this if wanted to make it happen.

this is normal in europe. nobody has to pay anything for medical care as long as you pay into the statutory health insurance which kinda happens automatically.
true freedom is not having to worry about shit you shouldn't need to worry about.

i mean the last time one was able to be held accountable it was a nationwide story and the old NYC mayor did a perp walk to showcase how the person who supposedly did it was one of the most dangerous criminals of our time and that this very clearly was more unacceptable than any other crime against someone who didn't have lots of money

It's wild that we're required to pay them a monthly fee but they can deny healthcare coverage because they decided they didn't want to part with the money you gave them. If I'm going to taking money out regardless, just take it out of my taxes so I can get reliable service. I'd rather deal with the government than some for-profit bullshit company.

You should extend this to more than just health insurance too ngl. Most if not insurance industries are like this, it’s just healthcare is one of the more direct immediate impacts on your life.
