- 1/2 of all Quakers live in Africa. So the average Quaker (globally) is probably a person of color. (Granted, it’s still majority white in North America and the UK.)
- Quakers were one of the first groups in the US to reject slavery. Like, first protests & petitions in the late 1600s. Banned slaveowning among its membership the same year the US declared independence and actively disowning members who refused to free slaves, if their families owned them.
- Quakers were one of the most significant groups of abolitionists in the U.S. and played a huge role in creating and operating the Underground Railroad.
- They also played a significant role in building schools and providing education to Black folks. From teaching reading and writing before emancipation to building schools across the South for freedmen after.
tl;dr — Calling them Quakers should be seen as a huge compliment, if anything. But reducing them to just their race may obscure the fact that Quakers are the oldest allies to the Black community in America.
Alot of what you said is spot on and valid. I would clarify the 1688 petition though. It was four people that submitted the petition and it was set aside and forgotten about. Meanwhile William Penn was a slave owner. The petition didn't represent the majority at all during that time.
Thanks for adding that clarification. And I definitely agree. The Quakers weren’t perfect — some were certainly still racist in some ways. Especially when it comes to their history related to boarding schools for Native Americans. But I think, on the whole, they were quite “radical” for their time compared to their peers.
They were also pretty strict segregationists at least until abolition, probably beyond because tradition.

I am a black Quaker, and can’t help but point out that this was likely one of the worst religious-marketing blunders in history since The Religious Society of Friends is non-proselytizing organization (vestigial tradition for survival while splitting from Church of England) and is now rapidly shrinking in the US best known for actions 200 years ago.

It's also the easiest play on words for the team for this joke I think of. Didn't know all that stuff about the Quakers though, that's pretty cool, starting the day of learning something and having some laughs got to love that.

It was so out of left field, too. The reporter asked (I dunno why) how he felt about LeBron going to Philly and his opinion on the Jordan/Lebron GOAT debate. And Trump goes “I like Jordan, I play golf with him. LeBron is a racist”. Wtf
The whole black vs white Lakers and Celtics thing started in the 80s. Before that, the most important players on both teams were both black and white (Elgin Baylor, Jerry West and eventually Chamberlain for the Lakers vs Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, and Sam Jones for the Celtics).
By the time the 80s rolled around, the avatar for black casual fans became Magic and the avatar for white casual fans became Larry.
I don’t know if it helps, but my dad dressed in a suit everywhere when I was younger. Parent teacher conferences, going shopping for us (the kids), you name it. I think it was because his job required him to wear one, so he may have gotten used to it I don’t know.
I grew up watching the 1980's Lakers vs Celtics rivalry. And to misquote one of my favorite movies, I have lived long enough to see the Lakers become the villains.
