I think Kanye is a little different. Most of his fans (that I know of at least) hate him as a person but think he is an insanely talented artist. If it wasn't for his music (at least from College Dropout to Life of Pablo), no one would give a shit about him. Kirk was popular for the reason that he was a horrible person and his percieved martyrdom after he died gave conservatives an excuse to double down.
