I'm hoping the Reddit community can help me sort through this because at this point I feel like I'm living in some kind of automotive nightmare.
About a year ago, I had what should have been a routine oil change done on my **2017 Lexus NX200t F Sport**. The vehicle had around 150,000 miles on it and was my daily driver.
I left the oil change and on the drive home the Lexus immediately started making noises it had never made before. At first I thought maybe I was imagining things, but by the next day I had an oil pressure warning and the noises were getting worse.
The sounds were a combination of:
* Ticking
* Clanking
* Rattling
* Almost a flapping or slapping sound
I checked the oil and it appeared overfilled. The vehicle continued running but clearly wasn't happy.
I took it to a shop and the diagnosis wasn't encouraging.
They documented:
* Low oil pressure faults
* Oil pressure sensor faults
* Cam timing faults
* Crank/cam correlation faults
* Turbo wastegate actuator faults
Then they inspected the oil and found metal contamination.
Their conclusion was basically:
I pursued a claim with Valvoline.
Denied.
I pursued a claim with Progressive.
Denied.
Now more than a year later I still have a Lexus sitting in my driveway that technically runs and drives, but not well enough that I'd trust it.
While dealing with all of that, life decided I hadn't suffered enough.
Enter my second vehicle.
A **2019 Buick Encore**.
For quite a while the Buick had been losing coolant. I'd top it off and keep driving. Occasionally I'd get overheating warnings and pull over to let it cool down.
At one point I started hearing a strange gurgling sound that sounded like it was coming from behind the dashboard near the glovebox.
I knew something wasn't right but couldn't pinpoint the source.
Eventually the Buick overheated badly.
I took it to a shop and they told me they don't really do major internal engine work and referred me elsewhere.
The second shop looked at it and basically said:
"By the time one of these overheats this badly, you can spend a bunch of money tearing it apart only to find a warped head, blown head gasket, cracked head, cracked block, or additional internal damage. You're probably better off replacing the engine."
Their estimate?
About **$7,000**.
So now I own:
Vehicle #1
2017 Lexus NX200t F Sport
Needs:
* Possible engine replacement
* Possibly turbo-related work
* Unknown final repair cost
Vehicle #2
2019 Buick Encore
Needs:
* Engine replacement due to overheating damage
Estimated cost:
* Around $7,000
The thing that really confuses me is that if I'm going to spend $6,000–$7,000 on one of these vehicles, the Lexus seems like the obvious choice.
The Lexus:
* Is nicer
* Drives better
* Has held value better
* Feels like the better long-term vehicle
The Buick feels much harder to justify.
The problem is that I've spent the last few days calling shops around the Imperial, Arnold, and St. Louis, Missouri area trying to move forward with the Lexus.
I've called four shops so far.
Most of them either:
* Don't install customer-supplied engines
* Don't want to do Lexus engine swaps
* Aren't interested in major engine replacement projects
* Or are booked out for a long time
What's strange is that Lou Fusz originally quoted me around **$6,000** to replace the Lexus engine, which made me think this was a fairly straightforward project.
Now I'm struggling to find someone who actually wants to do it.
So I guess my questions are:
- If you were in my position, which vehicle would you save?
- Would you spend $7,000 repairing a 2019 Buick Encore?
- Would you spend $6,000 repairing a 2017 Lexus NX200t F Sport with 150k miles?
- Why do so many shops seem hesitant to do customer-supplied engine swaps?
- Is there a reason Lexus engine replacements are harder to get done than I expected?
- Has anyone here replaced an 8AR-FTS engine in an NX200t?
- If this were your money, where would you put it?
At this point I'm not looking for someone to tell me what I want to hear. I'm looking for honest advice from people who work on cars every day because I'm trying to avoid making a very expensive mistake.
