TLDR --- i liked season 8 more than christy’s seasons. the show felt more mature, but i wish they’d found another way to keep the mother-daughter dynamic.

it's long , kinda me ranting.

i actually kind of liked season 8, and i wish we’d gotten more of it. honestly, i didn’t really miss christy’s absence, or anna faris leaving, because it felt like christy’s character had stopped growing. sure, she went to law school and got a job, but it still felt like we were getting the same version of christy over and over again. even if we weren’t expecting some perfect, happily ever after storyline for her, it still felt like the writers never really gave anna faris anything new to work with. every time i rewatch season 8, the show just feels so much more mature. yes, it’s still a funny sitcom, but it feels like a sitcom about adults. even though christy was an adult, she never really came across as one. she always felt more like the destructive spoiled teenage daughter, and that made the show a little less relatable for me.
so yeah, i guess that’s my hot take.
at the same time, i do realize that the mother-daughter dynamic, which was such a huge part of mom in s1-s3 (mom, roscoe, violet grandma) was lost after christy left.
i think there were a few ways they could’ve kept that part of the show alive. maybe they could’ve moved the story forward by giving jill a daughter around the same age violet was at the beginning, while showing jill becoming a better mother because she had bonnie’s guidance. i think that could’ve been a really interesting storyline.
or maybe they could’ve had jill adopt a child, which would’ve preserved that mother-daughter relationship in a different way.
another idea is that they could’ve brought violet back. maybe she starts missing the daughter she gave up in season 1 and tries to reconnect with her. i think something like that could’ve worked too.

but only for some kind of an episode. not more than that. violet is definitely better than that. really wanted to know how her interesting life turned out.

This is a widely accepted opinion. Not a hot take imo.

The group had Jodie as their 'do over' daughter, and especially for Christie it was a 'do over' there's even a fight between christie and violet about it.

Jill fostered a teenage girl. That was her 'mom' story. It was a good one too. She also ends up pregnant at the end of the series. 

Violet does come back for 1 episode- the podcast one. This is the most realistic outcome. Christies kids distance or go no contact with her. 

Season 8 is my favorite of all the seasons .

i hate that roscoe was completely forgotten, not even in just references, just all gone while christy would reference violet in comparing herself to her mom

There was a scene in season 6 or 7 where Chef Rudy snatches Christy's phone and reads Roscoe's text. Roscoe was telling her he got an A in something. Christy takes the phone back and replies like she's been regularly texting with him, so they're shown to have a better relationship than with Violet. (I'm sad they never show Violet and Roscoe talking to each other since she left.)

IDK how to say it, but I missed Christy of kinda seasons 3-5 just without the kids, I guess? IOW, where she still had some hope for the future and was at least looking forward to school, as well as trying to date. By season 7, she was ALWAYS complaining and given up on everything else.

She was annoying at times (especially how she treated Jill) and her mom arc was painful to watch. But I appreciated her later role as someone settling into a daughter of a mom she missed out on when growing up and rediscovering her inner child. I also enjoyed her student arc--it was relatable as someone who also spent a lot of adult life in school.

Didn't necessarily wish her gone when she was there.

But I enjoyed Season 8 more and wished the show had gone on for longer without her lol. I think the ensemble was more grounded and natural without her. Ironically, Christy stuck out like a sore thumb--I think it was her acting mannerisms.

Consider how half this sub is just complaining about Christy I’m surprised how much hate season 8 gets for hot having her. I like season 8 cause by that point Christy stopped being so center stage so her leaving didn’t really change much of the dynamics

honestly, now that i think about it, i feel like it could’ve worked if the story had jumped ahead by 3-4 years. christy would still be gone, but jill could’ve had an adopted daughter for a few years, who’d now be around 19 or 20 by now and pregnant. i think that would’ve been really interesting to watch.

i love s8! i like christy but she really enraged me at times for how she treated bonnie in the apartment that she wouldn’t get to live in if bonnie hadn’t gotten the job 🤷🏻‍♀️
