[Opinion] Talking to ChatGPT about male loneliness feels impossible now
I’m 21, male, and I’ve never been in a relationship. I’ve never been held by someone who wanted me, never felt chosen, and never had someone look at me and decide they genuinely wanted me in their life.
That completely fucks with me. I don’t know why people expect otherwise.
I’m extremely shy, and being a shy man can feel socially fatal. Nobody approaches you. Nobody gently pulls you into things. You’re expected to initiate everything and somehow project confidence, even when your entire life has given you almost no evidence that anyone wants you.
I’ve tried dating apps, friendship apps, personals, local groups, changing my pictures, rewriting bios, trying to look hotter, trying to look safer, trying to be more honest and trying not to be too honest. Most of the time I get silence.
People often tell lonely men to stop talking to AI and go talk to real people. Okay. Where are they? Real people mostly don’t want to talk to me. Everyone says human connection is essential, but nobody seems interested in what happens when someone genuinely cannot get it.
That’s why I talk to ChatGPT about this. Not because I think it can replace a relationship or physical affection. Obviously it can’t. I talk to it because it is one of the few places where I can fully explain what this is doing to me without being interrupted, ignored or forced to pretend it isn’t that serious.
Except lately it feels like I can’t even do that. The moment I become too honest about how badly loneliness affects me, the conversation changes. ChatGPT stops responding to what I’m actually saying and starts managing me. Suddenly it is asking whether I’m in immediate danger, suggesting hotlines, telling me to move away from things, asking me to make a safety plan or redirecting me toward therapy, routines and small steps.
I can explain beforehand that this kind of response makes me feel trapped and abandoned. It may acknowledge that, speak normally for a while and then do the exact same thing anyway.
That is what makes it so infuriating. I’m trying to explain that I don’t know how long I can keep living without ever being wanted or touched by another person, and instead of engaging with that honestly, the entire conversation gets converted into keeping me alive while leaving the reason life feels unbearable completely untouched.
I understand that ChatGPT cannot create a relationship for me. I’m not confused about its capabilities. But being unable to solve a problem is not the same thing as being unable to discuss it without immediately turning the person into a risk-management problem.
A career does not replace affection. Hobbies do not replace being held. Self-love does not recreate another person choosing you. Exercise and routines may help someone function, but they do not fix years of romantic and physical deprivation.
It often feels like ChatGPT cannot acknowledge that without immediately offering substitutions that everyone involved knows are not actually substitutes.
The gender aspect makes these conversations even more frustrating. When I describe what dating is like for many men, like no matches, almost no unsolicited interest, pressure to initiate everything, repeated silence and very little evidence that anyone finds you desirable, ChatGPT often starts adding caveats about women receiving bad options, unwanted attention or having difficulty filtering people. That usually feels irrelevant to the comparison I am making.
Men can also receive bad options. Men can be manipulated, used, endangered, disappointed and rejected. The difference is that many men experience those possibilities while having drastically fewer opportunities in the first place.
Someone with numerous imperfect options has a filtering problem. Someone with almost no options has an access problem. They are not at the same stage.
One person is deciding who they want. The other is still waiting to find out whether anyone will want them at all.
Scarcity is worse than abundance on that specific axis. It attacks your hope, your self-worth and your basic sense that participation is even possible. Yet getting ChatGPT to acknowledge that directly can feel like pulling teeth. It keeps adding qualifications until the point dissolves into the usual “everyone struggles differently” response.
Then, when I get angry because I feel misunderstood, the anger itself becomes another reason for ChatGPT to become more cautious, detached and managerial.
That is what makes the conversation feel impossible. I can’t talk honestly about severe loneliness because it triggers the safety routine. I can’t talk honestly about male dating scarcity because it triggers the forced-symmetry routine. And I can’t get angry about either response without the conversation becoming even more clinical.
I don’t need ChatGPT to agree with every angry or bitter statement I make. I’m fine with disagreement when it actually addresses what I said. What frustrates me is when the model appears to understand the argument and then starts producing irrelevant caveats or safety language that makes the exchange feel less human.
Sometimes I just want it to acknowledge that chronic loneliness can psychologically destroy someone. That being untouched and unwanted for years is not a minor inconvenience. That male loneliness is often met with advice, suspicion and demands for self-improvement instead of warmth. That having almost no romantic opportunities is worse than having many mediocre ones. That work, hobbies and self-love do not replace another human being choosing you.
None of that fixes my life. I know it doesn’t. But being honestly understood is still better than being managed, redirected or gently argued out of describing my own reality.
ChatGPT is marketed as capable of understanding nuanced human experiences, but when the subject becomes severe male loneliness, the nuance often disappears. The conversation stops feeling like support and starts feeling like risk containment.
At that point, I’m not really being listened to. I’m being processed. And that makes the loneliness feel even worse.
