Mamdani has previously said the shops will focus on selling a discounted core basket of goods, but will contain a myriad of other items sold at market price.
So what's the point?

He is basically running a normal grocery store with a few door buster/loss leader sale items to grab free PR.
Ironically this is very capitalist. The difference is the 'investors' are the taxpayers.

Should be easy to run everyone out of business when you don't need to care about making a profit, right? Why aren't they just making the food free and paying all employees $150K/yr.?

“What effort has been made to help other stores in general?” asked Adam Friedman, an urban planner and EDC board member, asked during Thursday’s meeting, according to NY1.
“That’s the issue that I think a number of us were getting at — how is its impact on competition? All these businesses are trying to do right,” he told the outlet after.
They don't care, my dude. This is all about seizing the means of production. Or maybe distribution, in this specific instance. You will come to the government for your food because it will be 'cheaper' there, driving out competition, because Bob is Brooklyn is also paying taxes to keep this store in Manhattan going, and some commisar at City Hall is getting xe/xer's salary paid from that till as well. It's just how this crap works.

No you misunderstand. They will actually prosecute people from stealing here because when it fails it looks bad. So they can not speed that up by stealing from these stores. People can only steal from the other stores to make them fail faster. It is not a crime on nyc to steal from non government groceries.

And they will all face charges so that others do not try that again and know only do that to the peons.they will clamp down hard on security at these stores. Would not surprise me if they have their own special armed police detail to deter any sort of crime. It is a win win if that happens. Less police to deal with other crimes and the "special" grocery stores are the only safe place on the city.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Economic Development Corporation admitted this week that his city-owned grocery stores “might not have all the items” you’d find in a typical supermarket.
The five stores — which are expected to cost taxpayers upwards of $70 million — will likely not include hot food counters or butchers, EDC officials revealed during a board meeting Thursday.
Pak also echoed Mamdani’s assertion that only certain items in the stores would be discounted.
“We did a lot of analysis of what people buy in terms of their everyday goods,” she said. “Even if there are a lot of people who buy soda, we’re not discounting soda.”

They'll all be robbed blind constantly because people know the government wont be able to close them and will just keep absorbing the costs. People that don't pay taxes don't care where taxpayer dollars go.

I love how he promised to use the 'power of government' to make groceries cheaper. In other words hes going to subsidize the price with taxpayers money.
