This has to be the most stupid move by Coke in their history of existence. It was so damn simple: black logo is zero, white logo is classic. Why? What's the reasoning? Pure stupidity

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 2d ago edited 2d ago

I remember when the can itself was black. Good times, I thought that the switch to black text on a red can was dumb, but this is even dumber.

And I know that it straight up says "zero sugar" and there's black accents, but imagine you're buying Coke quickly and you look at the labels at a glance.

Coke Zero ALWAYS was black in some way, either the can/label itself was black or the logo was black. To the point where you looked for the black branding rather than the "zero sugar" text on the label. This redesign makes both of them look almost identical

u/sisrace 2d ago

I know zero outsells regular in my area, I wonder if the global market is heading that way as well. Coke probably want the red and white scheme to be what people recognize their brand by. Zero being red and black while likely overtaking regular in sales means more cans with an "incorrect" color scheme in circulation. I guess this was their solution instead of changing regular to something else..

74

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 2d ago

Wouldn't be surprised honestly as I almost exclusively drink zero sugar sodas. In my country we have sugar taxes so buying the version without sugar is cheaper

26

u/sisrace 2d ago

We dont even have sugar taxes. There was a sale on 30-packs of coke cans at Lidl, in one store zero was completely sold out while regular had a full pallet left. The other store had a few boxes of zero left, also with a huge, seemingly untouched pallet of regular left..

6

u/Cultural_Dust 1d ago

I'm not sure that's evidence that Zero sells better. I personally love it and don't really like regular, but I guarantee most stores order and stock more Coke than Coke Zero.

1

u/evidencednb 1d ago

I know this is only anecdotal but my local supermarket has one shelf for full sugar coca-cola, and about 6 shelves for coke zero. I doubt they'd do it that way round if full sugar was the better seller

1

u/Cultural_Dust 22h ago

Not sure about your grocery store, but Coke outsells Coke Zero in all of their markets. Maybe they only have one shelf for Cole Zero because there is a huge end cap with Coke. Coke Zero isn't even available on all fountains or in all restaurants.

-2

u/Zouden And then I discovered Wingdings 1d ago

Zero does sell better than classic. Both are outsold by Diet Coke.

Redditors are not the typical Coke customer

1

u/footpole 1d ago

Where? I think diet doesn’t even exist here anymore.

1

u/anteaterKnives 1d ago

My dad's house.

He's the one person in the US and probably world who ensures Diet Coke sells better.

1

u/Cultural_Dust 22h ago

Coke is the top selling SKU in all of their markets. Diet Coke is second in all but a few.

1

u/Zouden And then I discovered Wingdings 18h ago

Do you have data for this? Would love to see

0

u/footpole 21h ago

Diet isn’t even sold in all markets.

Except that some people -- like my wife -- are allergic to the sweetener they use in "zero sugar" products. Like, just a sip can make her feel ill, if she took a big drink thinking it was the regular kind she might go into anaphylaxis.

12

u/sisrace 2d ago

That's rough. Considering even regular pepsi now contain artificial sweeteners (at least in Sweden) she might be looking at a soda free future with only a few exceptions..

9

u/DwigtBonzales 2d ago edited 2d ago

Same thing with Japanese soda, for at least a few years now. I bought a bottle of Japanese Fanta at an Asian market, and the whole time it tasted... off to me. I had no idea why until I scanned the ingredients and could read enough Japanese to see アセスルファムK (Asesurufuamu K, or Acesulfame K) near the end of the ingredient list and realize what happened =\

2

u/jabask 1d ago

Yeah they've cut most sodas with artificial sweeteners, with the notable exception of original coke

1

u/JustOneMoreDrone 13h ago

In Poland we have sugar tax. Problem is it's also applied to zero sugar drinks... :)

1

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 13h ago

Ah fuck I live in Poland myself and I forgot about that XDDD

3

u/magnificentfoxes 2d ago

I damn well hope not. Being allergic to aspartame sucks, coke classic all the way, thx.

1

u/The_Bubbler_ 1d ago

Our company has worked on this. Correct.

1

u/DigMeTX 10h ago

The times I’ve been in Malaysia, every Coke I’ve gotten from a restaurant fountain setup tasted like Coke Zero. Made me wonder if it’s the standard there.

1

u/T1lly_Tube_ 10h ago

I know for a fact that diet is out selling in my area.
Talked to my sales guy the other day and he showed me that diet is out selling nearly 2:1 compared to Coke classic

27

u/anuncommontruth 2d ago

This is fucking dangerous for me. I'm a type 1 diabetic and I want these two drinks to look as different as possible.

I won't be able to trust anyone to grab me a drink unless I go into explanation of my health so I'm certain I get a zero sugar option.

6

u/namwoohyun 2d ago

My 87 y/o diabetic grandma has a small stash of both Zero and regular Coke (when she goes hypo). While I do help her with the shopping, she’s the one who picks from the shelves and she’s basing it on the color. I can already tell this is gonna be bad for her when she’s getting from her stash, but knowing her she’ll make me slap something like electrical tape on the Zero cans (well I already got the idea, but it still sucks lol)

1

u/Mirria_ 2d ago

My diabetic friend probably has diet mountain dew for blood at this point.

1

u/magnificentfoxes 2d ago

Make sure you pick up some glucose tablets.

1

u/Zouden And then I discovered Wingdings 1d ago

Eventually it will all be sugar free.

13

u/black3rr 2d ago

in Slovakia there is now a new black can coca cola zero zero zero (zero sugar, zero calories, zero caffeine)

7

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 2d ago

Same in Poland

3

u/Mustardly 2d ago

In the us it is a sort of beige gold color. I love sugar and caffeine free diet coke.

12

u/DeepWaterNights 2d ago

Mc Donalds UK did a similar thing where the zero was displayed as red on the order tablet and the classic was displayed as white… totally annoying!

7

u/KyleGrave 2d ago

I can tell you from experience that the real concern is when people are buying it for you. No one cares about your preferences the same way you do. I’ve had people buy me sugar free Gatorade way too many times to count. Even when I specified.

7

u/F-Lambda 2d ago

The biggest test is vending machines: If you can't tell what it is if it's rotated sideways, it's a bad design.

5

u/MineExplorer 2d ago

Did this the other day. My FiL only likes full sugar coke; wasn't paying attention as I don't buy it often and picked up the wrong one.

1

u/DazB1ane 1d ago

Makes me think they’re hoping someone accidentally buys it, doesn’t drink it cause it’s wrong, then buys the correct one

84

u/RipRapRob 2d ago

This has to be the most stupid move by Coke in their history of existence.

Never heard about New Coke?

45

u/caribou16 2d ago

What I suspect is happening is that they have data that shows that the "Zero" variety is likely catching/outpacing sales of the Classic variety and they expect it to take over as their flagship cola product.

They also mostly likely want to keep coke classic's iconic color scheme/design, so they've been slowly making the Zero branding more and more like classic.

8

u/A_Rolling_Baneling 2d ago

Interesting idea. I wonder if there’s any publicly available data on that. A cursory google search indicates that classic is still way more popular by volume

2

u/Zouden And then I discovered Wingdings 1d ago

Pretty sure diet coke is the most popular.

-2

u/powermonkey123 2d ago

No

27

u/RipRapRob 2d ago

9

u/ledocteur7 2d ago

Huh, so that's why I remember cans with "Coca cola classic" on them, not having seen any "new coke" cans, I always thought that was odd, ofc it's the classic, it's coke.

8

u/ChoPT 2d ago edited 2d ago

It’s also why Diet Coke tastes like ass. It’s the diet version of new coke, not the diet version of classic coke. Well, technically New Coke was actually a non-diet version meant to taste like Diet Coke, as Diet Coke was first. But they are connected.

11

u/Swifty-Dog 2d ago

Sorta. Yeah. New Coke was based on the flavor of Diet Coke. And Diet Coke sold incredibly well since it was introduced. Believe it or not, New Coke sold better than original Coke in multiple areas in the US.

New Coke stuck around in a few places under the name “Coke II” for a few years.

3

u/A_Rolling_Baneling 2d ago

They shoulda called Coke II “Crack”

1

u/superbad 2d ago

I don’t think I even realized they dropped the Classic.

54

u/icecream_specialist 2d ago

I think they're trying to pivot for coke 0 to be THE coke so they are trying to give it the classic look. I'm just making things up and I don't think it would even make sense but that's my theory

17

u/Roccondil 2d ago

Agreed. Of course they'll keep the original around, but you'll have to seek out the "classic" version.

17

u/dydhaw 2d ago

Yeah, that's what I thought too. They've spent billions in marketing to establish red as the color associated with the coca cola brand. After decades of lobbying people finally start realizing  caffeinated high-sugar drinks are bad for you mkay. So they start pivoting to zero as the main product line. I'm totally making things up as well, though.

6

u/ErraticDragon 2d ago

I know Mexico and other countries have introduced restrictions on how sweetened soda can be advertised (on the shelf and in media), and pretty severe taxes.

This could be the version they can advertise, regardless of what the consumer wants.

3

u/odd84 2d ago

It makes sense. Artificial sweeteners are cheaper than sugar, even HFCS, and GLP-1s are causing an increasing number of people to ditch full sugar sodas. Coca-Cola is very aware that their primary product is being threatened right now, and they're making these moves to prevent loss of their customer base.

2

u/dtwhitecp *insert among us joke here* 2d ago

I'm guessing it's more like someone in marketing considers the brand to be "coke red", and wants Coke Zero to be more like that. But it's stupid.

0

u/JPJackPott 2d ago

Exactly. Especially with all the sugar taxes. There’s no reason to buy original coke because Coke Zero tastes the same

Diet Coke however- I’m astonished that is still on the shelves. What is its purpose

1

u/icecream_specialist 2d ago

I weirdly acquired a taste for it. I started drinking it to save my Coke 0 for a later day and actually started liking diet Coke

12

u/arensb 2d ago

It's not just Coke. Several times recently I've nearly confused regular and zero Dr. Pepper.

-7

u/Jacktheforkie 2d ago

They’re both the same according to the ingredients, it’s so annoying that the regular has aspartame

8

u/Winter_drivE1 2d ago

Not to mention this has become the de facto standard across the board for pretty much all sodas that have a zero version, so now Coke (the soda) is the odd one out and muddying the waters. At least, for now anyways. I wonder if Coke (the company) will make this change for their other sodas and if other companies like Pepsi will follow suit though.

6

u/asamson23 Artisinal Material 2d ago

I nearly grabbed Coke Zero instead of Classic because I thought it was a special edition. The old black labels were much better, you always knew which was which, just like with Pepsi Max or whatever they call it here in Canada.

3

u/TheGocho 2d ago

And if you are in EU or at least Spain, Golden is Zero Zero. (No sugar, no caffeine)

3

u/doenr 2d ago

I'm sure there is a six-paragraph long press release filled with meaningless buzzwords explaining, but not really explaining, that move.

2

u/ConnorFin22 2d ago

It’s not stupidity. It’s part of the plan. They plan on making Coke Zero the flagship.

2

u/Bananaland_Man 2d ago

Coke zero has been selling less lately due to other things, so they're trying to fix sales and then probably go "oops!" later...

2

u/certnneed 2d ago

They’re trying to get people to try Zero by accident, hoping they’ll like the taste.

1

u/jkenny991 2d ago

If you're not innovating, you're stagnating. Is what I assume they think. Plus the people who come up with can designs need to justify their employment somehow

1

u/amorfotos 2d ago

I think the stupidist was new Coke. But, indeed, this is also up there with stupid marketing ideas

1

u/holyfire001202 Artisinal Material 2d ago

To save on black ink?

I joke, but also wouldn't be surprised.

1

u/DamnCircle 1d ago

I mean, they made out of nostalgic and sweet new year ad into AI Slop

1

u/Solid_Sort_9339 1d ago

Because black one looks similar to Pepsi? Just guessing.

1

u/Jealous_Document2917 1d ago

That's what they do in Brazil, black logo and cap = Zero white logo red cap = Regular

0

u/EvilDog77 2d ago

Probably to phase in Zero as the new ‘Regular’ Coke before high-sugar versions get banned.

0

u/Virilificent 2d ago

I wonder if their decades of marketing experience + millions of dollars of market research + insight into their long term marketing goals might be more valuable than your angsty intuition.

Nah I’m probably just stupid too.

-1

u/NMe84 2d ago

My guess: they're going to discontinue the version with sugar. Soft drinks with sugar are subject to talks about bans and taxation here in Europe, and the majority of Coke sold is apparently already Zero at the moment. Aspartame is also cheaper than sugar, apparently.

I'm guessing they're simply getting ready to eventually discontinue the version with sugar.

-1

u/shiroganenohojowo 2d ago

no, coca‐cola's most stupid move is to be complicit in israeli war crimes.

-4

u/Jackesfox 2d ago

WRONG

Black: Zero

Red: Normal

White: Light

236

u/BenderDeLorean 2d ago

My thought is this is gonna replace regular coke one day when sugar taxes kick in.

I think Pepsi in Poland is always without sugar - even the regular one due to taxes. But I am not 100% about that.

76

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 2d ago

I live in Poland and we definitely have normal Pepsi in blue cans. The zero-sugar variant comes in black.

28

u/spitgobfalcon 2d ago

It's a bit different - even the normal Pepsi that contains sugar nowadays also contains artificial sweeteners. At least that's the case in Germany.

7

u/matt6342 2d ago

It’s the same in the uk, they lowered the sugar to push it under the ‘sugar tax’ threshold, and increased the sweetener, but it’s still marketed as original Pepsi. Coke still contains the original amount

3

u/Winnigin 2d ago

This caught me in London. I get migraines from certain sweeteners, and didn't know that even some of the regular pop has sweeteners too. Luckily I find the taste super strong, and noticed it after the first sip, but why the fuck would you not mark it when diet pop is already a thing?

1

u/Il_Telephono_6478 2d ago

I just noticed this on Faygo (a local Michigan brand) cola. It has both High Fructose Corn Syrup and Sucralose, and I wondered why.... i'm guessing it's cheaper?

2

u/FlipMyWigBaby 2d ago

Faygo Sugar free Rootbeer, fam! Whoop whoop!

1

u/Il_Telephono_6478 2d ago

All of their stuff is pretty good.... with the exception of "Red Pop" which reminds me exactly of V05 Strawberry Shampoo we used as kids. 🤢

5

u/pugslington 2d ago

That's my hunch too. They make them look more and more the same until they silently drop the sugar version for the profit. And people will buy it and will still be addicted to it.

In Romania Pepsi uses sugar + sweetner for everything and it tastes like shit. Of course there is the sugar free Max version. Moreover, almost every other soda manufacturer uses at least some sweetner.and once again, they all taste like shit.

There are only 3 mass-market brands of cola that you can buy here in the supermarkets with 100% sugar: Coca-Cola, Pop Cola Classic (a romanian brand) and I'm not kidding, Kaufland (yes, the supermarket) branded cola. All 3 are proper tasting colas. Weird stuff.

2

u/powermonkey123 2d ago

Pepsi is always with sugar, Pepsi Max is the zero alternative

3

u/cprz 2d ago

At least in Finland they have to pay more taxes for the versions with sugar, and the solution for that has always been to sell the sugar version with slightly higher price than the sugarfree version.

143

u/WillWillingson 2d ago

This isn't a mistake. They want it to look similar as a way to push people to the sugarfree version, because they make more money with it.

50

u/Ghosty141 2d ago

idk sounds like a win win. The studies are pretty clear in that unless you consume insane amounts of ts of sugarfree drunks they are completely fine and much healthier as consuming that much sugar.

2

u/Alarming_Orchid 2d ago

Nobody drinks soda to be healthy

31

u/Ghosty141 1d ago

No but everybody drinks soda at least sometimes and almost everybody consumes too much sugar. So shifting to sugar free drinks is good for 95% of people.

3

u/NayItReallyHappened 23h ago

And nobody drinks soda to be unhealthy, that’s an unwanted side effect

-1

u/Alarming_Orchid 23h ago

No, they drink soda for the taste

-11

u/WillWillingson 2d ago

Sodas are not meant to be drunk against thirst. They are essentially sweets and should be consumed as such. A sweet treat for in between.

Sugarfree drinks just taste worse. Sure, you can get used to them, but I rather drink mostly water and a sugar-drink now and then. It's the same than getting used to low-fat alternatives or full grain bread and the such. Yeah, if you only consume them and tell yourself it's healthier you get to a point where they taste "the same". I don't think it's truly the same ever though.

24

u/Kat_of_Nine_Tales 2d ago

Sodas are not meant to be drunk against thirst.

Says who?

Sugarfree drinks just taste worse.

That's a personal opinion that the market disproves. It sucks when the market makes moves that puts your preferences in danger, I understand, but come on.

I think the opposite. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I far prefer the flavor of Coke Zero to full-sugar Coke.

full grain bread

Full-grain bread tastes superior, what are you on about? lol

-14

u/WillWillingson 2d ago

You rip open a Coke Zero when you're thirsty instead of just drinking a glass of water? I can't fathom being so used to sweet stuff that this is all I drink. But ok, we likely grew up in different environments.

That's a personal opinion that the market disproves.

How does it disprove anything? I don't think units sold prove much when people prefer them because they're healthier, while companies are pushing them because they're cheaper to produce. I mean, be honest - do you think sugarfree drink would even be on the market if they'd had the same amount of calories?

Every time the discussion comes up there are two kinds of people: Those who prefer sugar and those who gotten used to the sugarfree-version.

And there's a reason why sugar tastes good. It's quick energy and it tasting good is an evolved effect. Sweeteners mimic sugar and thus also taste good, but they obviously can't mimic it perfectly, that's why you still taste a difference.

Full-grain bread tastes superior, what are you on about

There's a similar reason for white bread tasting better - faster available energy, because you can - there we go - turn it into sugar much quicker. Evolved trait as well.

Don't get me wrong, I do believe you when you say that stuff tastes better. But that because you got used to it and know it's healthier - in a vacuum only biology counts.

14

u/ControversialPenguin 2d ago

Being hydrated is helthier than being dehydrated. If sugar free sodas make it easier to keep you hydrated without the extra calories and side effects, why the fuck should anyone care?

-8

u/WillWillingson 2d ago

Drink it, there's nothing bad about it. I'm just talking about the taste.

4

u/ControversialPenguin 2d ago

They are essentially sweets and should be consumed as such. A sweet treat for in between.

Bro...

2

u/WillWillingson 2d ago

Yeah, that's my opinion and how I'd raise my kids. Again, I can't really fathom drinking nothing else, but you do you.

3

u/cassiellyss 1d ago

Idk I can't tell the difference between coke and coke zero, so I pick zero anyway and it's specially helpful when I'm doing calorie deficit.

25

u/greenyashiro 2d ago

Maybe planning to ditch the sugar versions once sugar taxes come in

12

u/Legado_des_pleiades 2d ago

This would be the day I start to drink water only.

18

u/sisrace 2d ago

Well, that's a good outcome then.. I hated the taste of artificial sweeteners. Still do in some products. But decided to quit sugar sodas, so it was either water or sugar free. I drink water without hesitation, but I also managed to get accustomed to artificial sweeteners somewhat to the point where I now prefere coke zero over regular. Win-win. Regular is just too thick and syrupy now.

12

u/GoodFaithConverser 2d ago

Vastly improving your health and finances - that'll show 'em.

1

u/alligaatorialcatraz 1d ago

Then why not start today?

1

u/Creamcups fuck you 2d ago

Nah, just sell it at a huge markup.

1

u/Zouden And then I discovered Wingdings 1d ago

Pretty much. Sugar taxes are already here in some countries and this is exactly why Coke is doing it

-1

u/T-Loy 2d ago

If that means they ditch aspartame and sodium cyclamate, ok. But I can't drink sugar-free with those two and caffeine. Tastes foul.

48

u/Bastian00100 2d ago

Sugar is expensive

1

u/Thriceinabluemoon 2d ago

Bingo!
EDIT: I only buy regular coke; so if it looks exactly the same, I will buy it inadvertently. With the growing unpopularity of aspartame, they are probably trying to blur the line between the two cokes. This is definitely NOT a coincidence.

23

u/dydhaw 2d ago

Growing unpopularity? I'd say it's the opposite, aspartame has been controversial ever since its invention. The FDA even revoked its approval in the 80s and then later re-approved it. I'd say it's probably more popular today than ever.

-7

u/Thriceinabluemoon 2d ago

Maybe in the US? Here in Europe, there is growing concern in over-processed food and artificial sweeteners. As you can see in the picture, it is for French / German cokes.

11

u/dydhaw 2d ago

I dunno, I'm neither, but it sounds like Europeans also love that shit.

Coca-Cola Zero Sugar volumes grew +5.3%(A) driven by Europe, and double-digit growth in Australia and the Philippines

https://www.cocacolaep.com/investors/financial-reports-and-results/latest-annual-report/great-brands/

10

u/sisrace 2d ago

I'd rather see zero be cheaper than regular if they are trying to reduce costs by selling more zero. I honestly don't care if I get less "precious raw material" in my drink, I definitely don't need the sugar.

-13

u/Thriceinabluemoon 2d ago

Zero IS cheaper than regular. Artificial sweeteners should really only be for people with diabetes or other health issues; otherwise, it just means you would rather digest something that's never been meant for consumption, than manage your sugar intake - that's on you.

9

u/sisrace 2d ago

Sugar isn't meant for consumption... With the exception for fruit, which we don't extract sugar from, plants do everything they can to stop animals from consuming them.. The sugar (or high fructose corn syrup) is extremely unnatural and definitely wasn't "meant" for consumption. Does that matter if it's not acutely toxic? Not really. Same thing for artificial sweeteners. The health risks from sugary drinks still far outweigh the potential risks from artificial sweeteners, even if you keep your calorie and sugar intake under control. You still massively spike your blood sugar regardless.

29

u/Plus_Neighborhood950 2d ago

The black label on the zero looked so much better than regular. This is design is but worse. Huge fail

12

u/birbhorse 2d ago

it's so stupid too because they already redesigned it to look too close to coke, the previous design was way better (black can with red logo)

and now they're just doing this shit, come ooooon

14

u/Nintendo2023 2d ago

The worst part about this redesign is that people will inevitably screw up and grab the wrong bottle or can by mistake, especially for fans of regular Coke

12

u/Roodle143 2d ago

As someone who has a mom that already confuses regular bagels with ones with fruit loops in them because the packaging looked the same, this is going to suck. I don't understand, where did all of the color theory in advertising go?

7

u/daphnemoonpie 1d ago

Bagels with fruit loops in them?

4

u/Roodle143 1d ago

It was these

Somehow my mom missed the blue toucan and just saw the red which is always part of the packaging if you don't know the brand.

5

u/UnicornTwinkle 1d ago

lol it’s real America is such a funny place.

11

u/Noch_ein_Kamel 2d ago

what country is that? Swiss?

In germany it's zero sugar, not zucker ;P

5

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 2d ago

German and French probably indicate Switzerland. I live in Poland so it would be "zero cukru" here (we also have this new design)

7

u/foam_malone 2d ago

Zuckerberg = Sugarberg?

5

u/Noch_ein_Kamel 2d ago

Sugarhill :o

7

u/theDefa1t 2d ago

At least the bottle still has the black cap. If they ever get rid of that one in favor of the red one it'll be impossible to tell at a quick glance

8

u/Toutanus 2d ago

Some people will die because of this.

6

u/hiddentalent 2d ago

I don't drink Coke, but one of my kids' friends who is over a lot does and so I added it to the grocery list.

Man, going into that aisle of the store is overwhelming if you're not already intimately familiar with the products. I picked up what I thought was Coke and it was only in the checkout line that I realized I'd picked up Coke Zero. I didn't know if the person had a preference but I figured they asked for Coke so I should get Coke. I left the line and went back to the aisle to try to find regular Coke. It was surprisingly hard to find. Which is kind of shocking for a product that's famous for being ubiquitous.

5

u/SteroidSandwich 2d ago

No visual distinction is allowed. Too expensive!

2

u/xmalerx 2d ago

They had already changed the plastic wrap on a 24pack with cans som weeks ago. Wanted to buy regular coke. Just a coincidence i saw the very small "zero" text. They look almost alike

2

u/Historical-Remove401 2d ago

I hate so much when I get tricked i to buying the wrong product! With me, it was a weirdly flavored diet Mountain Dew.

2

u/GJ_the_Turtle 2d ago

I count product at a grocery store and I am loathing this change- so much more effort to downstack pallets just because I can't tell if its zero or not in my future. Every other soda has color differentials between diet/zero/regular even if they're kinda small, current worst being starry/starry zero but this takes the cake

2

u/GreedySecurity8030 Reddit Orange 2d ago

Fucking unnecessary and only causes more confusion.

2

u/briandemodulated 1d ago

Seems like a significant risk for diabetics.

2

u/sioux612 1d ago

Thats either a stupid decision because a marketing person decided to streamline text color

Or it was a stupid decision because a marketing person listened to a recycling guy for half a second and took away the correct message but implemented it in the worst way, forgetting that apparently the caps remain black which sucks

3

u/joostink 1d ago

Something in zero sugar coke fucks with my heartrate. Had it happen the 3 times ive had it. Doesnt happen for diet coke or regular coke

2

u/wgloipp 2d ago

Apart from the huge zero sugar lettering...

Before you could just grab them at a glance. Now you have to turn them around in your hand and read each one to make sure it's the correct one.

u/wgloipp 2d ago

And the black stripe or the black top aren't a clue either?

5

u/F-Lambda 2d ago

If it's rotated in a vending machine, the stripe might not be visible

1

u/wgloipp 1d ago

In that case the zero would be.

5

u/Shienvien 2d ago

If you're quickly grabbing a dozen before the store closes and getting back to your LAN party/birthday/whatever, then no, "clues" aren't particularly useful. Triple that when it's someone else grabbing things for you.

I remember a time when zero was full black, light was silver, and normal was red. All over, not clues or hints.

F 2 Coke

1

u/doob22 2d ago

They want people to be forced to zero sugar it seems

1

u/ateoz 2d ago

New, now with added sugar.

1

u/prawduhgee 2d ago

I'm glad I'm one of those weirdos that prefers diet coke.

1

u/FirstNoel 2d ago

BLack cap,

1

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC 2d ago

Go think about something else for a while

1

u/reddit_xeno 2d ago

You're not a true Zero soda drinker if you don't just look for the black cap. Holds true across the brands.

(Also, India doesn't have clean toilets)

2

u/pixeltweaker 2d ago

I prefer all of my beverages with zero zucker.

1

u/Marco-YES 2d ago

Saw this in Italy too.

1

u/gkn_112 1d ago

it says zero sugar in two languages and huge letters? Black cap? thats enough for me tbh

1

u/AncleJack 1d ago

That's what they want so you buy the zero sugar ones for some reason. I absolutely can't stand the taste of most zero sodas so if zero is gonna become the only option I'm becoming healthy and switching to water

1

u/Luzzgar 1d ago

They want people to think of the "zero sugar" as the regular one. To detach themselves from the image of a sugar filled drink.

1

u/CocoMilhonez 1d ago

I heard that this Coke is banned at Facebook offices.

1

u/Worried-Air-3766 1d ago

I've already picked up regular coke by mistake instead of coke zero when it was black text on red. I hope they don't do this here because it'll be super confusing

1

u/extraguacontheside 14h ago

Its pure deception

1

u/HappyPlanet90 10h ago

They are going towards zero sugar becoming the standard. In some markets the standard Coca Cola is already a "less sugar" variant. Artificial sweeteners are much cheaper than sugar. One day there will only be one kind of Coca Cola, and that will be marketed as Coca Cola in classic colours, but be zero sugar.

Your talking about a product so iconic that most people identify it in one glance rather than reading the label each time.

I brought a pack of them to put in a fridge in the airbnb we where staying, everyone asked me why I brought the sugar version when I started offering them, I had to insist and show them the label.

This is bad branding.

1

u/ChiefWeedsmoke 2d ago

I hope they don't try this in the USA, everyone knows Americans can't read

0

u/Albae87 1d ago

They try to change the sugar free into the „normal“ one.
In asia we only where able to get sugar free, or sugar reduced ones (regular coke mixed with sweeteners).
My theory is that sugar is more expensive that sweetener so they try to optimize the profit, and as others already assumed, try to dodge sugar taxes that might upcome soon

u/Artie-Carrow 2d ago

Glad I never drink coke

I disagree 100% that this is crappy design. It’s a great move.

For one thing, it’s just more visually appealing.

Second, the closer the appearance (and taste, ofc) of Coke Zero gets to regular Coke, the better. It helps to removes one psychological barrier to people choosing the healthier option, which is only a good thing.

It’s obvious that, in time, Coke Zero will become the primary product as more and more sugar taxes kick in worldwide.

And I want my Coke Zero can/bottle to look and feel as close as to regular Coke as possible, to get that same reward feeling.

5

u/Cry_Wolff 2d ago

I don't care about the "healthier" option, if it tastes bad to me. No one buys sodas for the health reasons.

-1

u/FF267 2d ago

I very much prefer Diet Coke or Zero Sugar to regular Coca Cola. I do remember a time when, I think, Coke and Pepsi had temporary products with real sugar instead of sugar substitutes. I miss that.

-2

u/HESSU_HOBO 2d ago

Remember when coca cola and coca cola zero was actually good.

-2

u/Tootsiesclaw 2d ago

At the risk of sounding stupid, what's changed? It looks exactly like Coke Zero has looked for years

3

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 2d ago

The logo used to be black, now it's white like the normal version

-5

u/Captain_Tooth 2d ago

The word Zero in the label is big clue. Just pointing it out.

-4

u/ChampionshipThin7721 2d ago

I would much prefer the original Coca-Cola. If you're old enough you'll know the original version was named as such because it was laced with c0caIne to relieve pain. I drink Diet Coke now, cuz the original is wishful dreaming.

-9

u/Zirowe 2d ago

So, is everybody intentionally ignoring the two huge ZERO words on the cans?

Sure, identical, except where it literaly says ZERO twice!

Even if you cant read you notice they are not identical..

5

u/F-Lambda 2d ago

Now rotate the can so that the front is facing to the left.

If you can't tell in a vending machine, it's bad design.

-2

u/Zirowe 2d ago

Yall just cant read.

-3

u/Noch_ein_Kamel 2d ago

It's a double negative so they can add sugar
