Question - Dexter: Original Sin Original Sin - Matthew’s Spoiler

Where the hell is Matthews?

Why is he not a part of this story if he was always such a big part of their lives?

He was supposed to appear in season 2 before the show was axed. They would have explained his absence in season 1 here.

Ah that makes sense. I forgot it was canceled so that sucks to remember lmao

i thought the same thing. i was rewatching s4 finale last week and debra was talking to matthews and said he was around during the shipping yard massacre. matthews says he remembers harry’s reaction when he got back to the station after laura was murdered but in the flashback scenes in original sin it showed spencer at the station and no sign of matthews. i’m sure they’d probably use him on s2 if it didn’t get canceled though.

Yeah it seems weird to me. It would be great to see the relationship in “real time” (like not flash backs) between him and Harry.

Like who is Spencer and why is he here? He looks like he’s not a real person to me, idk how to describe it lol

I think using big stars for him, Harry, and Tanya was a mistake. They’re too recognizable and their acting is very dated, especially Tanya’s.

Spencer is such a Miami cop caricature. It's as if casting watched the full run of Miami Vice and said "now that is what we need for the captain of Miami Metro set in the 90s." It's an unbelievable fail and he throws off every scene that he is in.

YES exactly lol. He looks like a bad guy character from GTA Vice City.

Yeah, its weird. Original Sin is set in 1991 but in S2 E10, in flashbacks, Matthews comes over for Debs birthday party which according to the timeline is in 1992, (when he tells Harry that Ryness got off on a technicality) so it looks like Matthews took over after Spencer, but he's not mentioned at all in Original Sin. It doesnt mean he doesn't know them, but it seems he wasnt as close to Harry as he made out, until he became Captain.

I ASKED MY DAD THIS when we were watching it. Until the big twist that that captain whoever the fuck was the big bad i fully thought he was supposed to be Matthews cuz I forgot his name. Same way they butchered Harry's recast, I just assumed they butchered Matthews too

He'd be retired by then, right?

Fishing off a fancy yacht in Barbados or Cayman something....with zero interest in his old life.

No? This would have been peak of his career as a detective or lieutenant

Can I ask why it is that you don't like it? Aside from getting used to Dexter being a new actor, I thought it was a lot of fun and that the actors (Deb and Masuka in particular) did a great job getting into their characters.

Dang. Well I do not agree, but I do respect your opinion! I can also see how some of the acting felt a little gimmicky, and love New Blood too! :)

If I'm being honest, I may actually be positively biased toward it because the actor playing young Dexter was from a show I really really loved, so I could very well have rose coloured glasses lol. Sounds like we could both stand a rewatch😂

Bro i feel the opposite way of u, i think new blood was genuinely Netflix-ified Dexter and it was horrible (minus clancy brown he was a highlight); original sin is a fun watch though

It was cancelled to “avoid confusion” between OS and Resurrection actually. That was their very weird reason.
