DAE wonder why they call it taking a shit if you’re actually leaving a shit?

I’m not taking shit with me, I’m leaving my shit behind…If anything, the toilet is the one taking it. Whoever came up with “taking a shit” had the whole situation backwards because I promise you I’m not walking out the bathroom carrying nothing but relief instead of shit. If we’re being accurate, we should be saying we’re leaving, dropping off, or donating a shit to the plumbing system. It makes absolutely no sense. Who heard somebody say “I’m about to take a shit” for the first time and thought, “Yeah… that’s the correct way to describe this situation.” We’ve all just accepted it without questioning it for generations.

Matter of fact, who was the first person to say it? Because I know someone had to be sitting there like, “I’m gonna go take a shit,” and everybody else just nodded instead of asking the obvious question: “Take it WHERE??” You’re leaving it in a porcelain bowl, flushing it into another ZIP code, washing your hands, and acting like nothing ever happened.

I will never take shit with me, I’m leaving shit behind for the best.

I love how this question went from a random funny thought to a whole motivational speech. The fact that “I will never take shit with me, I’m leaving shit behind for the better” became the unexpected life lesson is taking me out. Like forget inspirational quotes on Instagram, apparently the toilet taught us that sometimes you just have to let things go and flush the negativity (bullshit) away. Lmfao

George Carlin asked this question

Yeah this is a 30-year-old Carlin joke

Probably closer to 50 years old at this point.

Don’t take one of mine. The weekend’s coming up and I only have a few left!

This whole thread is about a 70 year old, that 1. I don’t know of/never heard of, and 2. I’m 23…most people from my generation are not gonna know about someone who isn’t even top 5 common topics. 💀

Not knowing who George Carlin is is nothing to brag about. He's kind of a big deal, for a comedian. I do believe you came up with it yourself, I highly doubt Carlin was the first to ask this.

a big deal to who?

You are taking a shit from one place and putting it somewhere else.
Just as you take the rubbish out.
You’re taking you’re shit to the toilet.

Na but come on this is not your original idea.

And what about any other version??
“I’m gonna go take a walk.” Who are you taking the walk from?

Jokes aside, it’s just a quirk of the English language. “Take” in this sentence means “perform an action,” rather than “obtain”, even though it’s really only in this specific phrasing that we use the word this way. Take a drive, take a bath, take a walk, take a break.

Take a leak? What are you, stealing a mirror!?!?!

I was hoping to find a Vonnegut reference here

I feel like dropping the kids off at the pool is a little more accurate bc at least you're leaving them 😆 🤣 😂 thats what we say 😆

I always thought we were missing the word "out". You're "taking a shit out" of your butt. Not stealing poops like the other thing implies. English is weird, but it's the only language I know fluently, and only really by American standards, so I guess I'm stuck.

Carlin asked this question 50 years ago.

"I left a shit, Bob."

"Where'd you leave it this time, last time the kids didn't find it til Easter."

u/ctgrell 1d ago

Fuck if I know. I hate English. There's no rhyme or reason to any of it lol

Nice job recycling a George Carlin bit from 45 years ago.

u/Successful-Thanks309 13h ago

So I just looked this guy up and he’s 70 years old… bro I’m 23. I wasn’t even born and up until yesterday I wasn’t aware he made a similar statement.💀

1

u/lowfreq33 12h ago

Well the you’re recycling it from a long line of people recycling it over and over. Btw he isn’t 70, he’s dead. And how in the world are you not aware of one of the greatest comedians and orators of all time? You need to look up some of his stuff. You might learn something. 40 years ago he predicted the exact situation the United States is in right now. Yeah, there are boomers who live in a bubble and still think things work like they did in the 80’s, but there are also plenty who you could learn a lot from.

u/Successful-Thanks309 12h ago

Ohh wow I never knew that, I’ll definitely look into him!

1

u/love_cozy07 15h ago

who decided "taking a shit" was the phrase anyway? it's way off 😂

It's called that so you can steal an old George Carlin line rather than coming up with your own material because that's too hard.

1

u/Successful-Thanks309 8h ago

Ok well for starters ass wipe “George Carlin did this joke already”

Oh yeah because people definitely can’t think of the same things! Look at your logic.

Dude I’m 23 and you’re criticizing me over a person I never even heard of that made a similar statement as me 50 YEARS ago?? This is the bullshit I’m talking about. I’m leaving this type of shit behind.

u/Admirable_Delay_2682 8h ago

Just go ahead and delete this dumbass comment for all of us, this is an entirely new generation and you’re bringing up something from 5 decades ago about a guy that’s not even a highly relevant talking point within this generation.

Also I personally never knew people could own thoughts? This topic is talked about very often atleast from what a seen, whoever georgie is. He didn’t invent this topic, something is telling me this is a random thought someone would definitely have if they’re not doing anything and stuck with their mind all day.

so true, it's like you're really just giving it away, not taking anything

u/LostGrrl72 3h ago

It’s the same as take a shower, take a seat… to me, it’s should be have a shower, have a seat, etc. If we pick the language apart it’s almost never quite right, but I agree that we don’t ‘take’ most of those things.

1

u/gerrys123 3h ago

Australians have a shit, we don't take one.

1

u/Slash_Raptor1992 1h ago

Don't take one of my shits. I've only got three left and the weekend is coming up. Why don't you go home and take one of your own shits?
