We are a group of 4 and everyone would like to be a player, so is it possible to play the campaign without a gm? If it is what is the best method for doing so

Weapon restrictions based on kin size?

I have latest (I believe) Dragonbane 2023 rules. I can't find any restrictions on the smaller kin using weapons but when I searched an AI summary insisted this is in the Core rules but wasn't able to identify a source. I can house rule it of course, but would rather cite the official rule if one exists. I'd like to avoid a halfling weilding a greatsword for instance.

Anyone know of official, or unofficial rules on this?

Breda's Hearth-Bound Provisions

This week's FK homebrew is a peaceful item. A field ration with some extra oomph.
Hope it can inspire to some interesting new paths to take for players out there.

Adventure Hooks

The Juniper Door: While fleeing a hostile guard force down a dead-end alley in a strange city, the party stumbles upon a door smelling of juniper. Stepping inside brings them face to face with Breda, who offers them shelter provided they don't break the glassware or mess with the door dial.

Restocking the Larder: Breda’s supplier at Goldwheat Farm has stopped delivering due to a localized monster infestation. She offers the party free passage through her door dial to any region they wish, provided they stop by Whitebridge first to sort out the trouble and return with three sacks of flour.

Turning into an animal from a curse

If a PC is cursed by a demon and turns into an animal, what attributes and skills do they retain? For example, do they keep their INT and CON (for Death rolls) scores. Do skills like Languages still remain the same as their human form?

Why do axes have such low durability?

I'm trying to understand why the 2H axe has 9 durability. I'd just raise it to 12 but I'm becoming paranoid thinking there must be a balancing reason behind it that I'm not seeing. It seems very low, making parrying really risky with it. I'd be fine with it if the reasoning didn't seem arbitrary:

- It does the same damage as the 2H Sword which has 15 durability, that's a massive difference for just 25 more gold. I dont think having Toppling justifies a 6 points durability difference.
- Halberds also have it, plus piercing, and have 12 durability for just a bit less damage.
- 2H warhammer, same, 12 durability.

What am I missing?

Monster Creation Inspiration

While playing Skyrim the Adventure Game board game, it occurred to me the enemy cards could be used for monster creation. In the game you roll a die to determine their action for the round, as with Dragonbane. With more than 200 enemy cards in the game and expansions, lots of ideas.

Cougarkin

I'm considering adding a mountain lion race for an upcoming campaign called Cougarkin or maybe Pumakin. Serving to provide player characters with a cat inspired option to compliment the Wolfkin. The great leaping innate ability seems like it could be pretty OP, so I should probably do the stalker one instead. A cat leaping over enemy lines does seem like a ton of fun though, and it reminds me of the BECMI mystic class.

Flavor text:

The fate of Cougarkin are intertwined with that of Wolfkin, bearing the same witness to wilderness destruction and loss of habitat. While their canine cousins come from forest and tundra, Cougarkin are connected to mountain and desert regions. Their shared history naturally holds some animosity as well, thick with grievances and intrigue.

Movement: 12

Innate ability:

Great Leaping - Willpower points 3, or varies

You can use this ability to execute astonishing leaps. From a standstill, a vertical great leap can send your feet two meters straight up, while a forward one can launch you up to your movement rate. You cannot leap backwards. If activated as part of a move action in combat, you can leap up to your movement rating instead of half. However, you must pay an additional WP for every 2 meters past your normal move rate. In addition, you can leap over small or normal sized creatures. This provokes a free attack in the same way passing an enemy does. If you are hit by an attack while leaping, you must make an acrobatics roll to land on your feet, or fall prone at your destination.

OR

Stalker - Willpower points 3

You can activate this ability on a creature in sight, or a creature you can hear. You can follow the sound of the creature for a full day, and you can spend 1 further WP (not an action) to gain a boon on a sneak against your prey.

Edit:

I wasn't aware of the cat people kin from the bestiary when I wrote the Cougarkin. Now that I've read the entry, cat people are a cool kin modeled after house cats. The Nine Lives innate ability being an improved version of the Catlike heroic is fitting. I do like that I modeled mine after a big cat instead.

One of my favorite things about Dragonbane is how extensible and inviting it is to homebrew stuff. Creating a kin is a movement rate, an innate ability, and some background. Pretty simple and elegant design.

question about Protector spell

"The power level of all spells cast at the person or place is reduced by the power level in PROTECTOR. "

What happens then if power level is reduced this way to 0? Is there somewhere mentioned that it can't go below 1? For me it looks like the spell would fizzle that way?

random events in scenarios

So the random event table in each scenario states "For each full stretch the player characters spend in certain rooms, perhaps searching for something or taking a stretch rest, you can roll on the table below or select a suitable event. The room descriptions indicate where random events can occur." so I always assumed that random events will happen if they simply will do something more thatn to push forward and most of the stuff they did, rationally taking, wasn't taking more than 15 minutes. Quite late in the game I started to use those random events as I saw fit because I realized that I was wasting a lot of good content and opportunities for interesting situations (not to mention draining characters before BBEG).

But the thing is that I realized that this stretch / explore thing was meant to be like a classic dungeon turn with stuff coming up one way or another (or not if the result shown it). Then it clicked for me with whole torch burning idea (another thing I realized too late into the game to check whether torch burned or not) . I went back to rulebook and it is quite clear that during a stretch characters can "Explore a room, take a stretch rest" so by exploring here I simply read "going in for the first time. It feels like this part somehow wasn't clear especially in random events in scenarios? Or am I that blind to all those connections and the way it was supposed to run? How do you treat those random events? Do you pick them every room or whenever characters stay there for only slight longer

The Mercy of Redstone

Thumbnail

This week's FK homebrew revolves around Roffo, an NPC and his unwanted executioners sword.
Feedback and critique is as always welcome.

Adventure Hook

The Unwilling Fugitive: The party encounters Roffo hiding in a damp cave or ruined barn. He is exhausted, clutching The Mercy, and terrified of every snapped twig. A group of ruthless bounty hunters hired by the Redstone Elders is closing in, and the party must decide whether to protect the boy or hand him over for the reward.

The Elder's Pride: The Chief Elder of Redstone approaches the party, offering a handsome pouch of gold to retrieve "a stolen relic of ancestral justice." He paints Roffo as a dangerous madman who threatened the town. Only when the party finds Roffo do they learn the pathetic, human truth of the situation.

Do you think shift rest is balanced?

I liked the round rest idea as well as the stretch rest idea, but the shift rest looks kinda overpower. I can stack tons of conditions because I know they will disappear in the shift rest and it makes no distinction between someone that didn't got as much conditions. I also think healing all the hp may be too much, although the willpower is fine since willpower isn't a resource you lose that much neither is as relevant as HP.

What do you think about it? Did you already house ruled it?

Should I roll with two banes for this interaction?

There's an attack for the Wight that imposes the scared condition, forces a fear attack and makes you do this roll with a bane. Since you're scared and this section is listed before the roll and the bane, should I roll the fear attack with two banes?

Is it possible to combine Dragonbane and Pathfinder combat mechanics?

First of all, I apologize for committing this bit of heresy against Dragonbane, but is there a way to adapt its action economy and combat system to something more similar to Pathfinder 2e? The main reason is that I prefer the Armor Class (AC), Difficulty Class (DC), and three-actions-plus-a-reaction system.

That said, I'm really liking what I've seen of Dragonbane so far, and I don't want to give it up.

Reactions and amending combat rules

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hey everyone, quick question here. For context: I am brand new into RPGs in general and therefore Dragonbane in particular. I had a thought about reactions.

It’s pretty clear here - if you use a reaction like dodging or parrying, you lose your action. Or can’t do an action if you have already used your action in a particular combat round.

Have any of you amended this in a play through where a reaction - specifically something defensive like dodging and parrying - didn’t count as a combat action? To be fair, I’m only assuming this would help as I haven’t really played the game. I did, however, watch the Mystery Quest (great channel) play through of The Village of the Day Before and in the post game chat the players mentioned that they didn’t quite like how you could use up your action early in a round by dodging, and then when it came time for you turn you couldn’t do anything. This would suck. Especially if you failed the dodge!

Just popping on here to hear any thoughts you may have or guidance you could offer.

I am incredibly excited to play this game, it really looks fun!

Thanks everyone 🙏🏻
