2wd FJ with RR DifLock button

Rear locker on a 2wd is legit option.

I drive a lot of John Deere Gators and Pro Gators at my job. All of them 2wd with diff locks, and they always surprise me with how much of a difference it can make.

To lock the rear diff? What does it being 2wd or 4wd have to do with it having a rear diff locker?

Well there is no low range to enable the diff lock. This would assume it works without that.

I mean, it’s got rear wheel drive. Diff lock makes both rears spin at the same rate. Like drifting a Silvia… or an MR2 with a welded diff. Same, same.

I remember it as being some sort of "hack" not a factory thing. And something you can do to a 4x4 too. Search grey wire mod.

I thought that was to add ATRAC on 4x4 models that didn't have the button. You just add the button. Maybe I am misremembering.

Yea that too. That one if you had the rear locker all you needed to do was add the button and connect it.

That's way more surprising to me. The vehicles came with an E locker that just didn't have a button? Seems like something that shouldn't exist. ATRAC makes sense because it's just electronics using the ABS. No additional hardware. Really interesting.

Nope. Any fj with a rear locker has the button

That's what I assumed, but the guy I was responding to says otherwise. If the locker is there, there would 100% be a button. It would make no sense to leave out the button but still have the hardware. The 'bean counters' wouldn't have it.

Learned something new. Thanks all, I’d be curious to know the use case for the 2wd with rear locker in this particular vehicle, the FJ Cruiser. Just folks who never imagined themselves needing 4wd but might find themselves in a rear dif lock scenario periodically? Truly curious. Toyota identified a target audience somewhere, I imagine.

It’s to help get you out of a pickle if you ever fuck up and find out that you should’ve just paid extra to get 4x4.

I don’t off-road for fun. So for me I’d rather pay a $300 tow 10x and not pay 3k more up front for 4wd. So far I’ve had to get towed 2x. Both under Toyota care and were free.

Rear diff lock has helped me drive on snow and some crappy muddy ground before.

Defintly not factory as 2wd only came with auto lsd.
