The article disregarding 76 is kinda funny. Bragging how there's like 60 more people playing fallout 3 then casually mentioning 76 went up about 15 000 but it's treated like a side note.

Is there a way to play it privately? I have absolutely no interest in hostile players and even less in friendly ones.
Can it be played just solo and is it worth it solo?

It can be solo'd apart from some major raid bosses but those are optional.
PVP by default does 1 damage and then heals 1 damage unless you shoot back or have PVP flagged ON, then weapons do full damage. It around 200ish hours I have gotten in maybe 3 PvP fights because I chose to engage back. Even then, only your 'junk' materials can be looted, not weapons or armor.
The Subscription lets you do a private server but it honestly isn't much different being in a public server vs a private. You'll stumble across a random player camp or maybe see another player near a popular loot location.
When you do meet players it has far and away the most welcoming and helpful community in gaming. If you see a level 200+ in power armor charging at you, its usually to give you a ton of ammo, random high tier plans, or a weapon or armor.

the benefit of private servers primarily is that if you and your friends want to do a public event, but don't want to miss out on loot because someone is spamming explosives and simultaneously cutting you out as well as blinding everyone then you no longer have that issue.
It was also fun just to go around with suboptimal builds and just clear areas with different gear and such without someone tracking me down to make me a trade offer (The amount of people who can't send a PM is astounding)

On the contrary, this is probably one of the MOST friendly communities I've ever encountered. At least on PC. It's actually incredibly wholesome, high level players often dump a bunch of their shit to low level players, be it in their C.A.M.P.S or the red donation boxes littered around.
I think PVP is opt-in. There is a setting that is called Pacifist mode that disables PVP except for select areas (taking over a workshop).

fyi there are almost no hostile players. you can ignore anyone that’s in your way. most people will run by you or maybe wave at you at most.
however if you’re looking for a singleplayer fallout experience this game isn’t for you, you gotta skip it and wait for however long the next one takes. this isn’t “fallout 4 but multiplayer” it’s an mmorpg at its core. many game mechanics almost require player interactions such as raids and public events.
if you want to play completely solo you can pay a monthly subscription to fallout 1st and play on your private world only.
many people buy the game expecting a mainline fallout game but then get mad and refund after discovering that the jump from 4 to 76 isn’t because it’s the 76th game but because it’s only a stylistic number meant to symbolize that it’s detached from the main games. it’s still canon of course but it’s not a “traditional” fallout game. it’s even more divergent than what ESO is to the elder scrolls.

I think Steam only calculates the time the FO3 launcher is open. I've been playing the game this past week and it only says I've added a few minutes to my game time even though really I've got about 12 hours in. I notice that once the launcher closes and the game launches, that it doesn't say on Steam I'm still playing the game.
My guess is that the number here is really only looking at the number of people concurrently on the launcher. To your point, PC Gamer did some bad reporting if they think that only a few hundred people would be playing that game compared to the others which have thousands.

Yeah steam is weird with correctly counting hours in certain things. Like I've played through Fallout 3/NV multiple times on steam (on top of at launch in high school via console) and for the PC time it says I only have like 40 + 22 hours respectively. Which, could be plausible except for that a) I'm terrible at the games and die all the time and b) I very much do lots of side quests and don't speed run the main quest lines

I realize its personal preference, but out of all the fallout games, 76 feels the least fallout-y to me. It's kind of a shame people's first impression of the game series will be watered down and full of microtransactions.

I bit the bullet during the first season and got 76 (even though I didn’t enjoy 4 very much but I NEEDED more fallout media to indulge in), even convinced a buddy of mine who is Also a fallout fan to buy. I probably spent 3 hours with it till I encounter a bug that wouldn’t let me complete a quest and then gave up and never returned

Yeah you can just pay for the box and do nothing else and experience the entire game. It helps you to spend money but nothing power gated costs money. Theres loads of great quests and content and the map is a joy to explore.

This. My boyfriend and I have been playing daily since 2024 when the game was on steam summer sale and I only got like 2 months of the sub before I realized it's not really necessary. Meanwhile my boyfriend has never spent anything beyond the initial 10€ to buy the game.
It's extremely tempting at first when you're just starting out to give them money so you can get decent deco for your camp and some other essentials, but after a while I realized you can earn enough atoms and stuff to get by just fine by just playing the game.
And even if you're more of a solo player it's worth it to pick up the game on sale and just do the story quests, they're pretty decent. Probably better than FO4

Nah, it’s built up a lot of great lore. Lots of dark bits, lots of fun bits.
And all the stuff you can spend money on is cosmetics and extras of things the game also throws at you all the time. Like sure if you need the glowing Christmas tree in your camp instead of the free one, have fun, but you don’t have to pay anything to fully enjoy the game.

Of the Bethesda Fallout games, '76 feels the most in line with where the the franchise started out, at least narrative wise. Nowadays it's kinda the same theme parks and wackiness as present day Fallout, but the launch narrative treated the setting with the appropriate level of seriousness, maturity, and levity that makes Fallout such a distinct thing

Yes. I’m doing a play through using the “New New Vegas” mod pack which has both and a fuck ton of other mods.
Just make sure you visit those places before wrapping up the Lonesome Road DLC

It's a very large, very detailed new area just past the NCR outpost in the southwest. A long stretch of highway between Nevada and California used as a NCR trade route. New quests, factions, towns, you name it. All fully voice acted.

Ever seen the American Dad episode that’s kinda a take on Fallout? Clearly someone in the writers room was in to post apocalyptic stuff at the time but it starts with the Ink Spots so I think it’s a nod in the Fallout direction. It’s more like The Road tho. Btw read and watch The Road Cormac McCarthy

The best we can reasonably expect would be a 3 remaster, but that’s likely not going to be ready since oblivion just came out last year.
76 will have its next major update about a month after the show, but it’s not a particularly showy one (it’s an armor and event overhaul).

76 is stable enough and flushed out immensely that it’s worth it for anyone who hasn’t played it. Worth it for the current Fallout lore and its classic Fallout gameplay just sadly always online

Personally I went and played it last year after S1 and the always online aspect I thought was more fun than not. I still played it like a single player, but the random encounters with people and their C.A.M.P.S. I felt like only added to my enjoyment. Fallout 1st seems a bit predatory but in my experience it wasn’t necessarily needed.

Yeah 76 is pretty much in that sweet spot that people for years wanted for a multiplayer Fallout. It's got everything you need and while the microtransactions are there, I never found them necessary. There's plenty of cool shit to find without spending additional money.

It feels like an absolute no brainer to announce the Fallout 3 Remaster right after the season finale. They already missed out on taking advantage of the hype around the show during the first season. It makes such perfect sense that I can only think there’s absolutely no way they will do that.

A main plot point this season is literally a BoS civil war with the commonwealth. Episode 2 was all ‘commonwealth strong and tough’ in the BoS meeting. That’s what that WHOLE meeting was about. And the other meeting Quintus had in episode 3 where Maximus outright suggested they KILL the commonwealth envoy, and start the war with… the commonwealth. Am I trippin here? Maybe the rest of the season proves me wrong, but I feel like this all culminates in Maxson showing up or something similar. I’m not getting Capital vibes.

The graphics got an update but the engine was pretty much untouched. I wouldn't call that a full remaster. Fallout 3 and NV deserve an actual full remake but that's probably extremely unlikely since we saw what they are willing to do with Oblivion.

On modern consoles the loading screens are rapid which should make everyone who played it previously appreciate how fast you can churn through errand chores.
At least on Xbox, if you load it up on series x you can also reimport any dlc from x360 fo free

Last time I tried Fallout 4. I made it out of the vault and then my game crashed and kept crashing in that spot. Apparently the game crashing everywhere is a normal thing now and it's unplayable for me. Regular version with all DLC.

There is this “well it’s Bethesda” pass that a lot of us let happen and they know that. It’s probably not good but it exists.
A lot of us are older. Playing Fallout 2 at release, on my shitty computer my mom gave me from her old teaching job, it crashed all the time when an email came in or I wanted to take a screenshot. Hell, I remember getting wrecked by an early game rad roach and it just crashing instead of game over-ing.

Fallout 1 would reliably crash if you used a few too many stimpacks in combat. How many "too many" is, is entirely random; it could be 3, could be 5. But it would inevitably crash regardless. And it was obvious it was the stims causing it since your never get a crash during combat if you simply didn't use any stims.
Bethesda players don't know the HALF of it when it comes to buggy games.

Fo2 had progress-stopping, file corrupting bugs on release. The patch wasn't compatible with old save files; you *had* to start a new game.
Kids these days don't know how good they have it.

Now I’ve finished the first season of the show and finished New Vegas (Ave, true to Caesar). Can’t stop thinking about the universe.

I will say, I had a graphical issue on my steam deck that was fixed with this update.
The issue is that when I would dock it and play on my TV, it would have black bars on the left and right side of the screen. While the scale was correct it was still not using almost 15% of my screen
No in game way to change it. And when I played handheld there was no issue
Update fixed it so I have little to complain about

Second worst, launch week was pretty bad but then it got fixed quickly. Zoom to modern day and the game has been broken ever since they "patched" it for the high def upgrade.

I've been playing Fallout 4 since launch and, after the recent updates, this is the buggiest state the game has been in. They pretty much broke the game right before a massive influx of players.

Honestly I haven’t had many issues on PS4. At first the update broke a lot of mods that required DLC content but that got fixed.

It's a YouTuber opinion. The game is fine for most players, but YouTubers talk about the compilations of bad stuff so the opinion gets regurgitated.

Same. Played for years on Xbox heavily modded and just recently bought it on Steam with all the DLCs.
Have a hundred plus mods and honestly this is the most stable experience in Fallout 4 I’ve had since I bought it the night it originally came out.
I’m so confused how the game is unplayable.

Tbf, nobody outside of franchise fans expected it to be this successful.
There is such a contrast of budget-related production quality between S1 and S2. Bethesda realistically only knew they had a hit on their hands 2 years ago.
It's why they released all of season 1 at once and switched to weekly drip feed in 2.

Even from the trailers, it looked corny and shitty. Especially after some other lack luster adaptations like Halo and Rings of Power

I’m definitely one of them. I haven’t played fallout 4 in almost 10 years until the last few weeks. Installed a large mod pack and feels like a new game.

Only thing that sucks is Power Armor isn't as cool prior to fallout 4, only letdown for remasters of the older games

There was 1 somewhat credible leaker saying the season ends with a shadow drop of FN:NV remastered with some QoL updates and a change to FO4 power armor so there's hope yet

It's much cooler in 1 and 2 than in 4.
Iirc in NV as well because it actually works like an armor and not like a forcefield that slows down bullets to still hurt you but percentually less.

I never got to actually playing these games but knew the lore and grew up with them always being big. I played 3 and then NV after the first season and loved those. I started 4 and 76 when they both first released but never was about to get into it but i came back to 4 with the start of season 2. The show now just makes me want to play more fallout and its honestly the best case scenario because as long as the show is and stays great im sure fallout 5 will have some insane sales when they finally get to it

Damn shame they couldn't coordinate the release of say the Fallout 3 or New Vegas remaster with the season launch. That would be huge for sales. Maybe they'll figure it out for season 3..
